In California many of us don’t put large art (or any art in my case) over the bed because it could fall on you and injure you during an earthquake. I am considering some sort of large textile, but whatever I hang it from would still be a potential hazard, and my husband has bad allergies, and so having anything dust mites might enjoy right over the bed could be a problem. Current thought is maybe a nice wall covering like a mural over that entire wall because at least that can’t bonk us in the head!

I don't live in California and also dread putting something heavy on my headboard wall . I go for smaller things, lightweight art or a mural.

I live near the Sf Bay Area. I have put art above the bed but it’s hung with a metal wire, in a stud & has a plexi face rather than glass. I’ve only done it in my guest rooms however. I’m a fine artist so I have artwork all over my home. I know how to safely hang art since I’ve been doing it for years at local art galleries.
@mosaicstylewmichaelmonreau424
Yes you have the right idea. If you don’t want to hang anything. Do wall paper. It comes in all kind of designs patterns and artworks. Contact paper to paste wallpaper. You definitely have multiple options to create a focal wall. Also you can use any wallpaper to fake artwork and just frame a patch of wallpaper with light weight molding or even another solid wallpaper as a border for a faux frame.

There are so many ways to have something on your wall behind you bed that gives structure, depth and/or personality eg wallpaper, paneling (traditional or modern).. also you can put a print wallpaper inside a panel.. that looks like a framed picture.. that way it doesn't fall off in an earthquake and no issues of mites.

I enjoyed your video and agree with you about art. I realize everyone can’t afford a Picasso or a Jackson Pollock. If you can that great but if you can’t you may look at art schools. They often have sales and it’s nice to support a local artist. Another item you didn’t mention that you may have alluded at the beginning is a TV. It’s the last thing you see when you go to sleep and first think you see in the morning. I know a lot of people will disagree with me but a TV doesn’t belong in the bedroom.

My husband will fill every drawer to the top and then never look at the bottom 3/4’s of it ever again and scrape and stuff every day items from the top. So I opted for beautiful , heavy , little French cafe tables from RH instead of traditional night stands . I still love them and don’t regret it ( except they do make dents in the rug ) even though my husband said it was a big mistake at the time. ( it wasn’t . cuz I’m tidy and he’s a squirrel that stuffs things everywhere 😉😜)

The best tip from Marie kondo was storing clothes by folding them in three then placing them in rows vertically so you see all you have in one glance and it makes more space. Socks too can be rolled up.i use a shallow box to store them. I also now hang items by colour.never been easier to choose items that go together!

Love this video! Another art idea- in your local area wherever you are, look into artists open studios events- these are events where, area wide, artists open their studios to the public to come through, see their artwork in the place it’s made, and maybe you’ll find your new favorite artist there! I’m an artist and these are such cool events to be part of and to go to. Some art is expensive, some is affordable. I’ve had people reach out to me years after they initially saw my artwork at an open studio event who are ready to buy a piece now- it’s so great for artists, and, it’s so great for the public too. It’s a really cool way to engage with your community, find some beautiful artwork that you can aspire to own one day, and even just really get a good feeling for what style of stuff you enjoy. Even if you don’t buy anything from these artists now, it’s seriously an amazing experience to go chat with these creative people and get a feel for what is out there! I used to live in San Francisco and showed / had my space at 1890 Bryant street- so if you’re in sf please check out that building full of hundreds of super talented artists! They have open studios twice a year in spring and fall. I now live in Joshua Tree which has an amazing art scene as well with “art tours” in October every year. Google it for your own town or city, and plan to have fun!!!

I love to go to art galleries and special events. How I got all my art originals. Even if you can't afford a original work, many artists are doing a giclee prints of their work you can buy from them. I have a gorgeous one I purchased directly from the artist at the Beaver creek annual art show years ago. Boulder, Colorado where I live has always had many galleries that are coops for artists.

I would never want a rug that goes under the bed legs. The dust, dirt and dog hair where I sleep at night would gag me. I need to be able to throw a rug outside over a line to air and get sun. I do use rugs to step down on as my ceramic floors can be cold first thing. I change them out regularly as they are washed monthly so don’t last for a super long time.

I like bedrooms to be more functional. I def don’t need decor taking up space. Nightstands are for things I will need while in bed not random books or vases imo! I def don’t like artwork or anything heavy over my head. The bed is the star. Great bedding makes it or breaks it! Being clutter free and not having papers or toys in your room makes a difference.

About the art over the headboard of your bed. I'm currently living in US, but am originally from Japan. Because of the numbers of earthquakes they get in Japan, putting anything over head especially over beds are safety hazard. So, after living in US more than 22 years, I still can't place any arts over my headboard...

@@HouseofValentina The lady above has a very good point, when we travelled to the USA 🇺🇸 and went to a few different locations, while in San Francisco we experienced a small earthquake that had everything I had stored in the bathroom come falling down off the shelves, we didn’t know what was going on because we’d never experienced an earthquake before living in Australia 🇦🇺, although it was small to the locals when we went walking the next morning, it sure did shake our hotel room around a bit and did some damage when we went outside on the sidewalks. My bedroom has a low pitched roof (even though the space is big--just in the middle) with only a low wall for the bed to sit in front of (like a mattress on the floor height?) I ended up buying an upholstered headboard (kind of the shape of a wingback chair with small sides) and floating it away from the wall with 2 bedside tables. It's unconventional but turned out looking great. The foot+ of space behind the bed is the pup's hiding spot and really goes unnoticed. You inspired me to work with the space I had and to think out-of-the-box!

Happy Friday Valentina 💕 Another great video. I so agree with your advise on bedroom decor. I personally want my bedroom to be the most comfortable sanctuary in my home. I’m Swedish (living in Atlanta) so some things that I never would put in my bedroom is a TV, art above my bed - this one is maybe a bit weird. I would always feel like something would fall on my head during the night 😮. It also makes the wall behind my bed look wider. I’m lucky to have huge windows with very wide and low window sills so I use them as shelves to put candles, books, plants and lamps on. That is a very Scandinavian style. Candles everywhere!

I do like things in a bedroom to coordinate but not necessarily match. It's nice if 2 or 3 pieces do match in color or wood. The most important thing about nightstands are the height bring close to how high bed is for ease of use. Each person on each side needs a useful nightstand with a lamp for balanced light. I love original artwork and do have one pretty large painting over the headboard with a custom frame that coordinates with a big mirror I have.

@@patty7116 I open my shutters up to let the air flow But I live in a hot 🥵 and humid climate and it’s mainly best to keep my windows closed to keep the heat out and the cool air of the air conditioner inside, but having a window seat does limit your space, it was already in our home when we purchased it and I do quite like it, I’ve got extra storage space under it with cushions sitting on top of it, the bedroom where it is gets the Hot 🥵 Afternoon Sun ☀️ so it’s best for me to keep them closed most of the time, except for winter when it starts to cool down but I don’t get winters like some places in Australia 🇦🇺 and over in the USA 🇺🇸…😊

I live in a farmhouse built in 1908, we have a window behind our bed (and it's off center 🙄). Our walls are mostly plaster and lathe so we don't have any hanging artwork because fixing that plaster was a pain in the 🍑. So I'm mostly trying to find art that can lean against the walls. Any tips on how to make it stay put? I'm thinking museum putty?

I agree about hanging curtains in a room, otherwise the room just doesn't feel or look finished IMO. But sunlight in the bedroom? I sleep in my bedroom, that's it. I don't need sunlight in the room, I need a nice cushy bed and darkness to go asleep at night. Even if sunlight was a requirement for my bedroom - say I sit in there and put make-up on, or have a space for a mini-home office, sunlight comes through curtains as long as they're not black-out curtains. I'm not going to be running around in my PJs or changing into clothes after I get out of bed with wide-open windows that anybody could look in, or a basically transparent curtain, my curtains stay shut and I have two layers of curtains (sheers underneath and a light weight curtain in front) to make sure they are opaque from the outside when lights are on at night inside the bedroom (and in other rooms in the house).

With 4 long haired Chihuahuas who are notoriously bad about mistaking anything with their pee pee pads, I avoid rugs. I am considering buying a few ruggables but I haven't convinced myself that I want to go through that washing process a few times a week yet as I hear they are difficult to put back on the undermat, not to mention moving the furniture off the rug with my bad back. For me it comes down to rugs are not practical and my dogs are more important. Years ago my old Chihuahua destroyed a Zebra hyde rug I had and I learned the hard way.

Which sheet sets would you recommend from that brand? I don’t like wrinkles in my sheets so it’s tough with all the great cotton ones out there

I’m trying to put together ideas for a feminine bedroom, lots of white , taupe, blue & white decor . Love the Roman shade with black out backing. I’m having a hard time selecting the bed. I want linen headboard wingback style . Don’t like canopy . Or maybe another type……. Do you have any suggestions?

No rug I have carpet. Plus it shifts and then the bed is too heavy to move. So no rug. Can you add a code so I can get a free bedding set cause the price is way above my price point. 😢

Great video! I really needed this one! The only negative was suggesting artwork over the bed. Not a good idea if you live in Southern California where prone to earthquakes! Otherwise, I’d love a piece over my bed.

OK, dumb question, but I've never bought ready-made panels before because I wasn't sure about the width thing. If you're doing four panels per window do you sew the two on each side together to make one panel or can you tell that they are separate when you hang them?

I love these tips! The only one that’s hard for me is the rug. We have a California king bed and then there is a vanity sitting almost right next to it on the edge of the bed. We tried to put a rug but with that vanity it just looked awkward:/

I would like a rug, but I have pets and to vacuum under a king bed is a pain - the fur and dander. A robot vacuum can only have so much suction.

Ok, I know you talk a lot about having curtains instead of blinds I like the idea, but how could that be possibly when I lived in an apartment? Is a really nice apartment, but management is really strict when it comes to making any adjustments or changes to it?

Hey Valentina!! Do you have any recommendations for where to get aesthetically pleasing blackout curtains? I am currently decorating my sons nursery and am trying to find some nice blackout curtains for him. I LOVE the look of white curtains but I am having trouble finding nice black out ones. His room is the colour Dark Harbor from Benjamin Moore (I went dark and bold inspired by you!)
