Please read: You may watch this video and roll your eyes thinking "of course it's only 5 minutes, your house is already clean".... I hear you, but I wanted to show you the MAGIC of hardcore decluttering, organizing and the daily stuff (laundry and dishes) - this is the result - a home that always looks clean and tidy and you DON'T have to "clean" before you can "clean". It took me a while to get to this point...My house was a WRECK for a long time. It never stayed clean for more than a few minutes. I've been there and I know how hard you are working... I just want to show you a way out. This video shows you the end goal - effortlessly clean. I tidy and clean way LESS now than when my home was messy. I've found shortcuts and systems, and I want to share all of them with you. You CAN have a clean and tidy home without cleaning and tidying all the time, but you gotta invest some time and effort in major decluttering and organizing to get there. I have a FREE 30-Day Decluttering Challenge starting August 1st here on RU-vid. I'll show you exactly how to take your home from chronically messy to constantly tidy...and it won't cost you anything except 15 minutes a day (above the time spent on dishes and laundry). You deserve this.

Agreed Cas! I used to toss everything in under the term "cleaning" so of course it took forever. But distinguishing it from decluttering, deep cleaning, regular tidying, and daily chores (laundry, dishes, bed making) means that if done weekly-ish the actual "cleaning" doesn't take much time at all.

I’m sorry you got so much backlash from that podcast. If you declutter to the point that everything is manageable, clean as you go (dishes), do 5 minute tidy ups and spot clean, this can happen. It’s possible. Thank you for all you do.

I agree. I'm working towards that goal. I was going to have to move (rent increase) so I have many things pulled from storage and closet, but renegotiation in my favor let's me stay. However, after 34 years in same apt and not always a decluttering person, I have lots to set free. I've been giving things away, organizing, downsizing, and "remodeling" my rooms. I have a ways to go. Mostly, it's been exciting. I feel I can breathe easier. You are an inspiration and I'll use this vid to reinspire myself if I hit a slump. Don't take the few flack posts to heart and forget how much you've helped the majority of your viewers. We may not all reach your exact 5 minute routine, for one or more reasons, but if we take/use your advice, our lives and homes will be greatly improved. 😉 Thanks again for your hard work to provide quality tips, tricks and solid methods. Seeing all those negative comments made me think of this quote: “People who say it cannot be done, should not interrupt those who are doing it” ― Bernard Shaw. While I have way too much clutter to be there right now, I once was. I discovered it was so much easier to maintain cleanliness in a home than wait until things are dirty to clean. My house stayed company ready with just a 10 to 15 minute quick clean each day. Now to get back to that.

Cass cleaned a kitchen without doing the dishes or the stove - that is the part that takes the most time. you cannot count all dish and stove cleaning as part of cooking - it's part of cleaning. She cleans a bedroom with an already made bed. I adore Cass, but this "5 minutes" is from magical thinking because she already did her other daily chores and is not counting that time as cleaning. She also has older children rather than destructo-babies and an uncooperative spouse or roommate. Yes, it's easier to clean a minimal house when you have good habits, but it's absolutely patronizing to say it only takes an hour/hour and a half to clean a house. it takes an hour in addition to the time it takes to pick up several times a day, make your bed, do the dishes after dinner, and do laundry.

@kindredanastasia
@kindredanastasia 3 месяца назад
@@ecbrent2 how long does it take to do the dishes and clean the stove - I guarantee it's more than 10 minutes, even if you clean as you go. THAT is the point. Doing all that cleaning while or after cooking takes TIME that is the "cleaning before the cleaning" and should be counted as part of the cleaning time. I have a bowl of hot soapy water every time i cook, and it still takes me more than 5 minutes to clean my kitchen. Heck, I have a combo vacuum mop, and it takes a minute to prep it, three minutes to do my kitchen and dinette area floors (gotta move those chairs) and four minutes to use the self clean cycle, empty, rinse, wipe and set it to air dry & charge. 8 minutes minimum to do the floor. This is if a certain toddler doesn't interrupt me, so i do it while she naps and fervently hope she doesn't get naked and poop in the bed which then requires a bath, deep cleaning, and extra laundry while the cranky sleep deprived toddler fusses for the poop covered stuffed animal that you're washing by hand with HOCl (a miracle substance if there ever was one, but I was out of it and had to make more, which took another 15 minutes...still faster than running the lovey through the washer dryer though). or a toddler clonks their twin on the head with the toy car to see what'll happen, or a toddler pukes on everything including themselves, or you simply find what you deduct to be flung yogurt on the curtains and exposed brick wall and it really requires some scrubbing... all of this has happened within the last week, but toddlers aren't the point - taking the doing dishes and cleaning the stove portions out of the kitchen cleaning and saying it takes five minutes is the point. use a timer and add up all the cleaning tasks in the kitchen throughout the day. that's how long it takes to clean your kitchen. The 1-2 minutes it takes to straighten your bed and pillows or 5-7 minutes it takes to strip and remake a bed need to be added to cleaning a bedroom.
@ecbrent2

The whole point is to declutter, organize your house and clean as you go every day. Every thing back in its place, everything washed and wiped as you go and then there's no reason cleaning should take hours or you should get overwhelmed. It's an extremely simplistic concept. Nothing to argue about, she's trying to help people and definitely nothing to criticize anyone for!!

My tips are: don't leave a room without leaving it neat and tidy for when you walk back in, so you will smile at it. Do a quick clean and tidy and empty wastebaskets at night after dinner dishes, before you get tired. Always put everything away after you use it. Don't leave a room ever without doing a quick survey. Everybody can do this. Nothing on the floor ever! A place for everything and everything in its own little place. Remind me. I get busy and forget too! LOL!

I hate when people complain. Not trying to be mean but just because you can’t do it doesn’t mean she can’t. She is well organized and she has a routine. That’s what it takes her no time. Most of the things she cleans are part of a routine. So it’s not hard to get through it fast. I started a routine and it works great. So now when I have to clean it goes fast. Not as fast as her yet but I’m getting there. My children are now as of a month ago have moved out so I have clutter from cleaning out rooms and closets and my attic. But when I stick to my routine it is so much easier to get through the clutter. It’s so satisfying cleaning out a room, closet or attic. Getting rid of everything. So many years of junk. I love this channel. She is good and has helped me tremendously. 🎉

I don't think people are "complaining" - they just didn't get it. Why is questioning or misunderstanding all of a sudden, "complaining." Most people are imagining a more thorough job when they think, "cleaning the kitchen" - such as hitting all the baseboards, wiping down the shutters, wiping the appliances, cleaning out the fridge, insides of the microwave, oven, range, etc. They are vacuuming and mopping the whole floor, not just the edges or the middles.. What Clutterbug is doing is a type of speedy maintenance cleaning, showing us what SHE meant, and kudos to her - she has cleared up any misunderstandings for everyone watching this video.

I have physical limitations too. I always make my bed, and wash the dishes. Every couple of days I quickly swish the toilet. I wipe out the bathroom sink once a day after using. If I use the stove, I wipe it off after using. After I wash the dishes, i quickly wipe out the sink. I find if I do those things, it takes about an hour to do the rest of the cleaning. But quickly, like Cas does. Each week I do some decluttering or deeper cleaning in a different room. Like you, I just work a few minutes at a time.

I'm disabled also, and decluttering, purging, and having a place for everything definitely saves me time. Sure, it took about 3 months or longer, a yard sale, and many trips to the charity shop to get the whole house ready. I'm blessed to have a husband who helped move things and take things to a donation center. However, everyday tidying up belongs to me because I'm the fussy one. 😅 I'm able to do a quick 'red up' most days. But only because I refuse to let clutter accumulate. When I'm in pain, my good husband does the mopping & vacuuming. I realize not everyone has someone to help, but I can do it on good days, just a lot slower.

I have back pain and it helps me. If you keep it clean, it’s easy. Just do 10 minutes of something every day. I have back pain and sometimes I don’t mop that week in the kitchen. But then I can pick it up the next week. I’m trying not to beat myself up for it. Besides, the cleaning woman only comes every other week and so that’s every two weeks for mopping
@coal.sparks
@coal.sparks 3 месяца назад
I think the real take away is not the 5 minute clean but the clean-as-you-go that makes a clean like this possible. I find cleaning as I go adds time to my cooking and bedtime routines which means that my actual cleaning is not that fast, it just doesn't feel like I take a long time. I also think that I am not good at estimating times, so telling myself "I'll just clean for five minutes to try to get this under control" often has me wondering what is left to do 4 minutes in.

I think the big things I saw in the comments were how do you clean the floors in that timeframe because most of us dont have a robot to do it, so we have to do more than the perimeter and she didn't say she had a robot doing them daily. And if we are going to hire someone it should be more of a deep clean.... and the professionals in the comments were actually doing all the floors and dusting baseboards doing more than flitting around with a swiffer duster barely touching stuff. The sad thing for me is that I'm chemically sensitive, so the fragrance and crap in a swiffer is not really a possibility. Like why can't they just make it without the chemicals? I'm working on the surfaces are lava idea, but I kinda feel like some of this is a matter of just moving time from weekly cleaning to daily stuff. I can do 20 minutes of vacuuming and sweeping up pet hair every day, and then when I do my weekly cleaning it won't need done because I just did it in dailies. I get that a lot of the super deep cleaning doesn't need done. Shoot, I didn't clean my shower for 10 years and was able to clean it with a drill brush and baking soda/castile soap paste in less than 2 hours (even with super hard water) and I never plan to take my oven door apart. But I think for most of the people that were confused by the podcast we see weekly cleaning or hiring someone to clean as the deeper clean than wiping up a spill when it happens where we get the whole surface or check under a sofa for crap even if we only move a few pieces of furniture each week. And maybe that isnt necessary if she doesn't have pets and her kids are older or the robot fits, but I think most of us need that done more than each time we move. And a lot of the people (myself included) have health issues. Even if I could run a swiffer around my ceilings and dust then do windows, Im crashing because my arms have been over my head or moving in patterns that tend to cause dizziness if my neck is even slightly out. So Im just not going to be moving quite as fast. Im trying to temper my disappointment because on top of everything else, I'm a butterfly. And my kids are butterflies. If we put stuff in drawers and bins and out of sight, it gets forgotten about. I'm willing to put toothbrushes in a cup on the counter if it means my kids remember to brush their teeth. And I'll keep doing my dusting a bit at a time because I have shelves with something other than closed boxes on them. I have other friends on here that are non-visual clutterbugs too, and I imagine this system works great for them as well because it looks like they don't have any possessions unless it is designated space for the people in the house that are butterflies. But maybe there is just some underlying trauma there too because I've never been able to do it the "right" way for the rest of the world. I'm not done decluttering, and maybe Dana will have more tricks up her sleeve when she gets back from summer break, but even she has cabinet doors everywhere to hide stuff. I have 2 functional cabinet doors in my house that we actually remember stuff behind. And we have all had bruises from the door because most of the time we open them we forget to close them. It just feels like a constant failure.

I use the dollarama "swiffer" and spray my own cleaner on fabric cloths. some spray mops you can put your own cleaner in them... my mom gave me one that she got at dollarama way back... works ok. I also have health issues that can keep me from getting things done... so I do what I can... If I can't clean the whole tub I do the top half and the next day the bottom. soaking things before wiping helps a lot esp w toilets... you aren't supposed to scrub hard but use the tip of the bristles... same for brushing teeth. lol I'm a butterfly too... also been downsizing many yrs now. "outta sight outta mind" I try to avoid randomly stuffing things to hide them/I do that to deal w later sometimes. we have a lot of pets as well- I couldn't get one: horror stories of those things smearing pet messes all over the house. get your kids to get the cobwebs. definitely the more you declutter the easier it is to clean... see Ab fabs "white box" ya most of us can't be that minimal. make a large to do list and try to do 1 or 2 things off the lists... play it by ear. since I was a kid I would bring a drawer or container out to deal w it at a comfortable spot or height. I have a donates bin, garb, recycling, ewaste/old meds etc if needed, repairs bin ( usually clothing) and try to batch fixing things. we took off our closet doors maybe you could try that w cabinet ones... and put a small curtain up. I also took a cabinet door off bc the cats got into it so I made it their spot, lol.

Thank you so much for sharing this!! I saw all the hate on that video too and was astounded! All I thought was "wow, I take wayyy longer than that maybe I can learn something here." I truly appreciate you having your whole life on display for everyone to see and judge from behind their screens, so that we can get better and learn a new and easier way of doing things! I definitely can see how vacuuming ratherthan sweeping, using a spray mop rather than always the mop and bucket, even cordless vacuuming, having just those few multi-use products.. all save time. You have really gotten even your cleaning routine simplified so that it's less work, less time, and it's not even a hassle.. it's amazing. I have found that even leaving the swiffer duster head on the swiffer ready to go helps me actually do it, it's just about simplifying it to what works for you and your space. THANK YOU!!! You are making a difference in SO many lives every single day!! 💕

Guys, I don't think disagreeing is backlash. It's okay to agree to disagree! I get what Cass is saying, and I get what others are saying too. People have different levels of clean that they need to feel good about their home. I think cass's tips are invaluable and even if 5 minutes is unattainable for some ( five shedding dogs anyone?), It's all about making it as streamlined as possible and not worrying about perfection.

I agree. If it doesn't bother you and you call it all good regardless of anyone else's opinion, then your cleaning routine is fine. Before my cat died, I'd invite people in, but warn them "this house is owned by a long-haired, 24-pound ginger cat, and we all need to deal with his hair because he let's us live here." I kind of miss his orange hair everywhere! 😢 I don't care what anyone's house looks like unless it is rotting filth because if I love them, I'm only there to see them. Their dust, piles of mail, or cat hair is none of my concern.

People's tolerance levels are different. What they allow in their home versus not (like shoes, pets, etc). And her saying daily resets so buildup of random clothes, toys, or dishes isn't happening.

I think people miss a few key principals that lead to being able to accomplish 5-minute cleans. Keeping spaces organized and de cluttered, clean as you go on a daily basis, and having a deep clean routine in place. Cleaning as you go is one of the biggest when it comes to maintaining a clean space. People being negative are confusing regular, everyday “tidying” with cleaning. If you are not maintaining an everyday tidy then cleaning will take longer because you have to tidy and organize before you clean.

Thank you...I used to have a horribly messy and cluttered home and I honestly worked HARDER on it then! Decluttering, organizing and quick tidy-ups is the secret to hardly ever having to clean. Once you've decluttered and organized (which is a LOT of work and time I know), every single day is so much easier. It's worth the investment of your time and effort.

We have an auto vacuum cleaner and it absolutely does not replace the need for me to use the regular vacuum cleaner. I wish the roomba worked better. It just doesn’t do the same job as a regular vacuum cleaner. It just picks up a light layer of dust only in certain spots - it doesn’t do the whole floor. It misses areas.

Great story at the end commando style! I'm 67 and am getting better at putting things away. It really is the secret. Don't put it down. Put it away! My mom's house was always company ready and it wasn't because she spent a lot of time cleaning. It was because she put things away. And she didn't have clutter. Growing up, we kids did the dusting and vacuuming on Saturday mornings. Boy, did I hate the "Rise and shine. It's time for chores." But personally I do think the kids should be helping. We also washed and dried the dinner dishes every night. I don't have kids so I didn't have to put this into practice as a parent. Many people feel it's just easier to do it themselves so the kids get a pass. I don't think that it's doing them any favors. It's life skills! I have draperies in most rooms, so no cleaning blinds! I'm looking for an inexpensive cordless vacuum ($200 and under). Any suggestions?

I considered our home is clean & tidy, always putting things away & clean after ourselves. BUT I can’t clean as fast like you. Maybe it’s my OCD behaviour. For example: watching you clean the toilet bowl, I could never ever use the same cloth to clean the inside of the toilet bowl then the outside…same goes for cleaning any surfaces without rinsing cloths in between (or use disposable ones), dusting cobwebs would require me to remove the webs from the duster before moving on… If I could clean like you, my household chores would be a breeze… Thank you regardless for opening your home & showing us your way of cleaning. I’m not crazy to think why it took me long to clean after all 😀

The rooms were dusted top to bottom, sticky surfaces were wiped, floors were vacuumed and mopped. Toilets, sinks, showers, mirrors were cleaned with the appropriate products. The whole point of a daily clean is that it does not matter if you missed a spot when you were dusting your end tables, because you'll get it tomorrow and it will never have a chance to build up so you aren't scrubbing up caked on mess. And it's not so overwhelming that you don't do it. Then you just have to have a deep clean schedule to do things like stove or moving the furniture out to clean behind it - but that doesn't need to be done everyday.

You are the one who taught me a long time ago, that cleaning, sorting, and organizing are DIFFERENT things.. THANK YOU!! Defining those words helped me tremendously in my efforts in house keeping… I’m naturally a messy person, and I wasn’t taught the process of daily cleaning up those messes. My mother was sick with cancer for a few years and just didn’t feel like dealing with a child’s messy room. I’ve also learned through your videos that I need to pick up a room before going to bed at night… and boom! No stressful slaps in the face first thing next morning! I’m by no means perfect, but I’m doing so much better, thanks to your videos!! Love you and can’t wait for more videos!

Cas, DO NOT APOLOGIZE FOR BEING GREAT, for being you!! You were bullied by idiots, lazy people and jealous wannabes regarding your statement that you couldn’t be cleaning your home in under 1.5 hours. I would guess those that criticized have disasters for homes cuz their excuse for not having a clean home is because they don’t have any time to clean. If you are saying that you can do just 5 minutes per room to have a home you don’t cringe when people want to enter- you took away their excuse cuz everyone as 5 minutes of time and 5 minutes of energy. I doubt many people have the kind of home you do and so when “professionals” say it would take them 4-5 hours - it’s because 1). Most peoples’ homes are a cluttered nightmare of a MESS. 2). Most housecleaners typically work for someone else and they prefer to work at a more relaxed pace cuz it means they can only do a few homes in a day. 3). You didn’t say you SCRUBBED each room to within an inch of its life. You didn’t say you were cleaning your home so surgery could be performed in each room. Get a grip people. Five minutes to dust without moving much and run a quick vacuum on the high traffic areas and throw some trash seems totally doable. 4). Most people (me included) want to complicate things, need to complicate things, either clean to the extreme so there is not time to get “to what’s really important to them” or not cleaning cuz they don’t have the time to clean to the extreme so they can’t get to “the thing that is really important to them” - BOTH are excuses- cuz they have no F’ing idea what is really important or don’t know how to relax and read a book or do something for FUN. DO NOT APOLOGIZE.

OH!!! I have binged your books and videos and courses for years and have always found everything so helpful, but this video may have been the biggest help of all. Seeing in real time how clear and tidied your house is and how that allows you to truly speed clean finally made it all make sense to me. And I totally see now how if you really are tidying and then cleaning in those five minute, frequent chunks, it would make the process so fast! When I was growing up, my stay-at-home mom kept our house immaculate--every surface clear. But still, every time we cleaned (which was at least once a week), it had to be the move everything, deep clean every corner kind of clean. And then I've held myself to that impossible standard ever since, even though it really doesn't work with my ADHD and exhausted teacher life. But that's silly and completely overkill. If I vacuum every day, I won't need to clear off every surface to deep clean. I can just do the quick pass through that you did, because the frequency is the key. Your house is definitely cleaner this way than mine is with my periodic epic deep cleans because I'm letting so much more build up between those marathons. I'll stop gushing, but thank you so much for being open and sharing what it really looks like--somehow *seeing* it adds an immense power of "aha" to all the information you've always given. Big love to you!!

What you call clean is what I would call a tidy (with the exception of the bathrooms), I have dogs, the thought of not moving their bedding (let alone cleaning it) while I'm vacuuming is absurd and one of my dogs is a poodle, so shedding is at a minimal, but they still shed skin (as we all do!).

It really helps that you have a Roomba, and that you don't have clutter to clean around. But honestly this wasn't a 5 *min "clean". It was a "lick and a promise" that gets done before company walks through the door..

I absolutely love your videos, and some of your advice has been life changing for me, but I have to be honest and say I found most of this video ridiculous and these 5 minutes could have been better spent reading a book or spending time with loved ones. I’m all up for quick speed cleans, but most of what you did was half heartedly tickle a few surface edges with a duster, wipe odd spots of counter tops and clean a window. Surely if you feel you need to spend 5 minutes in a kitchen you could focus on touch points and getting rid of germs, rather than flicking dust of the ceiling
