Just my own observation; an opinion not shared by all..and I am a huge Bee Gees fan: I love Robin's voice, but find I can't take a steady diet of it. It's kind of like icing on the cake..so sweet you can't take too much at once. But Barry's voice, well I listen to the Bee Gees daily. There's a reason for that. I love both Barry's falsetto and chest voice. Then put the three brothers together and it's just amazing and wonderful. "For Whom the Bell Tolls", features Robin at his best. I particularly love the one where they are singing outside in New York. The echoes in that version..wow. So special. I cannot say enough about these guys. ❤

Completely agree & you explained how I've always felt about Robin's voice. I can listen to some leads by him, then I've had enough.....but could listen to Barry all day! In another comment, someone explained Robin's voice as sounding a little like Tiny Tim....which is true.🎶
@BGWhisperer
@BGWhisperer 3 месяца назад
Agree with you about Robin’s voice and Barry’s voice. I can listen to the Bee Gees every day because of Barry’s voice, too. Yeah, Robin’s voice can be too much. At times it also becomes harsh, when the vibrato is too quick. I always say Robin’s voice is best in small doses. Barry’s voice is more commercial. Barry’s voice, no matter what era, has this tone and sweetness that just does it for me, as well as an equally unique and distinct vibrato that is different from Robin’s. Most of the time they all use their voices in just the right places, and that’s what makes perfection.

Our guys never disappointed us throughout all the decades of incredible music they created. And, yes, Robin left the group in 1969 for the very reason you stated. His song "Lamplight" was relegated to the "B" side of Barry's "First of May" and Robin had just had enough at that point feeling like he was being pushed aside for Barry. They admitted afterwards that they all shared some of the blame for what had happened and actually came to the conclusion that it probably was all for the best since they broke up as boys and came back together as men. Their fame and fortune had gotten the best of them and it took this separation to get their egos back down to earth. Robin's leads virtually disappeared when Barry's falsetto came on the scene and it might look like they were back at it but the brothers never parted ways again. Robin, however, never got back to singing the amount of leads he had sung from the late 60's to the early 70's and that's such a shame. The disco era changed everything and, in my opinion, not for the better. Robin's soulful leads were few and far between post disco and were all beautiful when he did get to sing but at least those three part harmonies stood the test of time and our guys created beautiful music together for the rest of their careers.

I remember also that Robin really wanted hit records and was very happy that their songs were doing so well in the 70s - Barry has said they were all encouraging him to continue using the falsetto. Also, I believe that the rule was that if you brought the song idea in, you got the lead. Songwriting wise, especially in the 70s, Barry was on fire! ;)
@amymarckel420
@amymarckel420 2 года назад
@@sallyhallada You are exactly right. Robin wanted hits and Barry’s falsetto was delivering them in spades. So why mess with a good thing. That being said, I did miss the Robin’s unique voice during that period. I was happy when he decided to release solo material during the early 80s when they were on a bit of a hiatus. IMO the three albums (produced by Maurice) he recorded during that time are very underrated.

'Lamplight' is cited as the catalyst for their breakup; but, truthfully, after listening to both, 'First of May' blows 'Lamplight' totally out of the water & is the better song. I'm sure tensions had been building for quite a while & Robin was looking for any chance at all to leave; but, even Robin must've known Stigwood's selection was a sound business decision.

They had their falling out for a year and a half-- Barry sang in his chest voice(normal voice)then BEFORE 1976, when Barry discovered his falsetto. [Correction: the falsetto formally appeared in 1975, but "Love So Right" was released in 1976] The break-up was from 1969 to 1970 because Robin thought management made some decisions in favor of Barry as a frontman and the "last straw was when Barry's song "First of May" was chosen as the A side for the release single over Robin's lead song, which was the B side. Both Barry and Robin have repeatedly attributed the break-up to "first fame," youthful egos, and immaturity. They missed each other too much to stay solo. Maurice was the communication go-between during the split. To continue what I posted earlier, might I also say that Barry was encouraged to use the falsetto for a couple of their albums because the Bee Gee's new sound was getting them hits in the late 1970's---1980. All three could sing falsetto and did during this period. In the late 1980's and on, the falsetto seldom appeared as prominently in their new music.

Hi Harri, Love your channel (subscribed). This song is so beautiful; may cause goose bumps, excessive perspiration, fainting, and tears. (Commonly referred to as the "Barry Effect")😂 Barry doesn't sound like a female to me. He sounds like the R&B groups of the 60's and 70's who often sang falsetto--the Delfonics, Stylistics (Russell Thompkins), Blue Magic, Moments (aka Ray, Goodman, and Brown), the Temptations (Eddie Kendricks). Check out some of these groups and you will hear a similar sound. Barry, however, is the master IMHO. Love me some BeeGees. In my head, I'm married to Barry. LOL ❤❤

For all the dynamic vocals you also have to give credit to the orchestration..I mean really,,this is s perfect fusion of lyrics amd melody. This tune and "Fanny' share that same magic formula. The Bee Gee's are just Stellar. There doesn't seem to be any strain or effort involved...the transition of baritone to falsetta is just surreal...and beautiful. While it is not really feminine gender sounding...more frankie valli...or stylistics thompson sounding. All to be admired. This tune is just timeless...thanks for the cretique.....Nice!!

There is a rare video of MJ and Barry singing that was never released by MJ but Barry released it was them in the studio! Sadly Barry being the only brother living as he lost the twins and too earlier on lost Andy Gibb who died very young and had his own singing career He sounded so much like Barry! Anyway Barry said it was so sad that when each brother passed they were not getting along before they passed on and it was heartbreaking! That is so so SAD! He had said He was tired of doing what everyone thought he should do and He always wanted to do a country album!!!!!!

Robin left the band & tried to go solo, but only 1 song was worth mentioning. While he was gone, Barry & Maurice put out an album with three. hits...First of May. Tomorrow. I.O.I.O. Barry also wrote hits for other artists...especially with Barbara Streisand...what kind of fool, guilty, & woman in love. All 3 were smash hits. Also Islands in the stream...for Kenny Rogers...Words for Rita Coolidge...Heartbreaker for Dionne Warwick. I was a kid when the Main Course album came out...Nights on Broadway, Jive Talking, Fanny be tender, etc. I've got tons more I could say, but I'll stop.

Great harmonies and that Barry falsetto. One of their best songs after all their Saturday Night Fever Album smash hits. This song made it to #3 on the US Billboard 100. #2 in Canada. #1 in Brazil. Only got up to # 41 in the UK. Wow. Great choice. 👍🙃🕊️💟🇺🇸🇨🇦🔥🌏

No, the break up was way before this….was end of the 60’s and part of 1970. They falsetto was paying off commercially and Robin was all about having the hits…so Robin, Mo, their management and the record execs all said they wanted the falsetto. Barry said he was having a blast with it until folks got tired of it and “disco” era music. This was mid 70’s. After the short break-up, they came back together in 1970 and wrote “lonely days” and “How can you mend a broken heart”. Robin left for a while ( in ‘69) but Barry and Mo continued to write and record. They did a TV special called Cucumber Castle. ( there is an album of the same name). When Robin came back, he said it was just no fun on his own. Barry missed having his brothers all together as well. Mo said in an interview that Barry was very protective, compassionate and loving. He was always trying to be the big brother ( which he was), but it didn’t always go down so well with Robin especially.

The brothers split in 1969 and basically yes, because there was conflict between Barry & Robin about singing lead, A vs B sides etc. But they came back together a few years later (years later before “Fever”) after working through it. They would still have disagreements but not the hard feelings.

To have listen to the Audio live version “At the Forum 1976 Los Angeles“ there’s only one clip of it on RU-vid and it’s even better than this studio version , the backend of that version is different to this version…smooth as you like.🔥
