so this recipe has potential. peel the sweet potato first before chopping it. mince the onion, don’t chop it into big cubes. toss those two in olive oil, salt and pepper. in a skillet, brown the meat with some more olive oil and spices. then put the meat on top of the veggies in the baking dish and add enough beef broth to cover maybe half or a third of the pan. and then bake. when it’s about halfway done, stir in some cornstarch slurry to thicken it and continue baking. when it’s done, too with some cheese and bam all done
I tried this and honestly, it wasn’t bad. You can easily add anything to it. I put the potatoes in the oven by themselves first for about 25 minutes; in the meantime, I sautéed bell peppers and mushrooms with some balsamic vinaigrette and also browned the beef in a separate pan (just salt/pepper on it). Then I combined it all and cooked for another 10ish minutes. Way less dry, a lot more flavor.
Italian Seasoning is made of 5-7 different spices. My husband doesn't like Marjoram, Thyme and Savory in Italian dishes. I quit using Italian Seasoning and stuck to the basic Oregano and Basil.
nancy breaux Exactly she can probably cook circles around most people in the comments section lol to me it looks like her mother or father taught her survival skills how to live on her own and take care of her family without eating out everyday. Everyone should know how to cook. 😀
kelly proffitt I was so scared! She doesn’t hold the knife properly and the cutting board was too flimsy and had no weight to it so it slid around! Accident waiting to happen.
Mystic Mogwai they aren’t FLDS, most of the family attends a baptist church and they follow the Quiverfull movement which is why they don’t believe in birth control
If you cover it with tinfoil it's not dry and you don't have to do the extra step of cooking the meat first. I make this a lot, I've kind of worked out the kinks.
@@caitlynmcmenamy1920 : Wow, if you really feel that way, why are you watching this video? Oh, just to complain and cut them down? If you don't like them, don't watch...
She’s use to cooking for a big family....EVERYBODY doesn’t like a ton of seasoning....did it cross your mind that the potatoes were washed before hand....get a grip😂
Taylor so what if they don’t want seasoning? It’s their food to eat however they want ! and did you ever think that she washed the potatoes before she started filming? You eat your food your way and they eat it their way you should try less seasoning
Casey Doherty yes, you can add the at the beginning. I love my veggies, so I always add them. I haven't done this yet though and can't wait till I can. currently my pregnant self isn't much of a meat fan, so when my little boy is born this is one of my first meals to try with the added veggies. You can also at the end, put it in a bowl and add Velveeta cheese. (if you are a cheesy person, or if you have children. Kids normally love anything with cheese. melt the cheese first though.)
i honestly was watching with eyes half open praying you didn't chop off a finger. I dont know if it was the angle or not but i think you need a new knife (or sharpen that one). yum!
1) Microwave the taters for 5 minutes in a covered dish-- its a shortcut for making them tender 2) Cook the meat over the stove first, breaking it up like you're making tacos 3) Add broccoli, mushrooms, and peppers (optional) You're welcome 😊
It's Me Again .... good suggestions but I think she’s going for the one pan fast preparation method. When you have small children there isn’t much time for cooking.
Becca Bby She said she was going to add different “seasonings.” Salt and pepper are seasonings. Italian Seasoning is a combination of herbs and spices. But, gotta negative comment or bust. 😠 Return email notifications are not available at this time.
Love how your little boy tried so hard to pick up that sweet potato, and hen he got frustrated and said, "forget it! I'll just smash it then!" Hahaha So cute!
Thank you for sharing with us! That’s so kind of you. ❤️ I dread cutting onions! I dislike it so bad I always glove up because I can’t get the smell off of my hands for days. Ugh! As for the onion battle, years ago, I heard that if you’ll light a candle just before cutting into the onion it helps to avoid the fumes from getting into your eyes. Also, I saw an episode with a chef not long ago on RU-vid that said cutting into the ends of the onion is what releases the fumes, so the best thing is to cut the center and not cut into the ends first. He chopped the center very thin, leaving it connected at the back side so it wouldn’t fall apart and once he had completed that he quickly chopped the ends off and added a few quick chops to the already sliced onion and added it to the pan. I thought it was very helpful to know and is a good tip to pass along to others. Love all of your videos. Yours such a sweet person!!
Just a little suggestion, try to remember to pre heat your oven, especially if you are baking, but first, your knife seems dull, which is dangerous especially if you are not an experienced cook!! Second, yes, the smaller you cook the potatoes the faster they cook, but me personally, there's NO WAY I would put globs of raw meat on top, try this.,, cut your potatoes and onions, layer in the Pam, season with your seasons, coat on olive oil and bake at 425 for 45-50 min, ground your hamburger on the stove, also season it, drain the grease when browned? When potatoes are golden layer your ground meat on the potatoes then layer shredded cheese on that, put cal in the oven MAYBE 8/10 minutes just long enough for the cheese to melt!! Voila No need for anyone to put her down for her cooking, we all start out somewhere right? Let's help by giving suggestions on what we would do!! Be polite!! I had no idea how to cook when my kids were babies, I am Now 43 and I can cook up a storm!! There's nothing I can't cook!! But until my son was 3 all he knew was dot dogs (he called hot dogs that lol) or H&H (hamburger helper) lol I remember the first thing I taught myself was a pot roast!! Then cooking shows came out or became popular!! Rachael Ray was my FIRST one, I just went from there!! Come on everyone, have some manners! I am a southern lady, we in the south know how to treat others!! God bless!! You
Neil and Michelle Belk I totally agree, however, I'm from South Dakota, up north, and I've we're all quite polite here, as well. I would never say anything rude. I think it's more HOW you're raised, than WHERE..lol I'm a couple yrs older than you, and I learned the same as you, through the years. Now I can cook👨🍳 pretty much anything without a recipe too..:) I love how you gave advice, instead of tearing her down. Encouragement is what our young people need. Best wishes!! 🤗
Neil and Michelle Belk sadly the kids now a days don't do much cooking instead they make a phone call and its delivered.. Or get into a car and go to the nearest fast food place.. I agree with you and what you suggested.. I too would do the same thing.. But probably with a bit more veggies in it.. And less meat.. I think she was thinking a one pot meal.. I love using my crock pot.. One year we put two med sized turkeys in crock pots.. And had it cook for most of the day.. Hands down it was the best turkey I have ever ate in my life.. The white meat stayed moist for the longest time after ever the holidays.. I use my crock pots for everything if. I can.. Lol.. I'm 42.. I started cooking at 13.. Cause of my work and when I became a full time Nanny I had to know how to cook.. So I wouldn't starve the kids.. By 16 I was able to make a full holiday dinner.. Did I make mistakes of course but I was taught it was ok to make those mistakes that's how we learn.. My very first Easter I was 13 1/2,.. And I put the ham in the oven.. (Without anything in the bottom) went back to bed.. Woke up 4 or 5 hours later.. With a smoky kitchen and a ham that wasn't even fit for a roach.. Lol.. The woman I was working for laughed and said looks as if were going out to dinner tonight.. Lol.. She and her 5 grown kids said I should of burned more dinners (that way they would have had a chance to eat out and not have dishes to do)... Very sad that people have to criticize others because they may not believe the same way as that individual.. Instead of being nasty and rude try to understand and respect the other person. The dugger family gets a lot of hateful comments.. I just don't think its fair or right.. Who are we to judge and look down on.. My favorite quote is simple but true... Who are you to throw stone at a glad house.. The person without din can cast their first rock. .. Maybe instead of judging we can help others by sharing your own personal journey. God bless
Says "Very sad that people have to criticize others because they may not believe the same way as that individual." BUT also claims "sadly the kids now a days don't do much cooking instead they make a phone call and its delivered.. Or get into a car and go to the nearest fast food place.. ". Do you know all kids? Because most I know would prefer a home cooked meal over McDonald's any day unless they are under the age of 10 and still obsessed with Happy Meals. Personally, I'm sick of the condescending and unfair judgment of young people. My kids are 18 and 6 and don't see anything like what most people seem to believe about "kids today" in them OR their friends. Maybe you are just surrounded by poorly raised children. That's sad for them, but its not fair to generalize an entire generation on your limited experience.
Hey Jessa, if you make the same recipe with regular potatoes, but slice them in thin circles, and then top with 2 cans of tomato soup mixed with a can and a half of water, delicious.Break up the meat in small pieces and and mix in the potatoes, onions, seasoning and soup, and bake. Just an extra recipe for you :)
I made this last night and my husband enjoyed it even though he is not a fan of sweet potatoes. I did add garlic powder. Their are many variations to this recipe all over the internet. People should stop cutting down the Duggar variation as it is what they like. Tweak the recipe if you choose to make it different.
That looks very hearty and satisfying! I must make this, but I’ll use some fresh garlic, then I’ll roll the cooked mixture in a flour tortilla with lettuce! Thanx for the idea!!!😋
I feel like this dish would benefit better by slicing the potatoes into discs and layering the mince and potatoes like a 'potato bake'. With seasoning between each layer.
I've been making this for a couple of years now and I've made a couple of adjustments. I use sweet potatoes and Yukon Gold's and I usually use sausage. I add baby carrots to it and cover with tinfoil before I put it in the oven. The meat is a lot less dry that way. I also sprinkle a little Italian seasoning over the potato/carrot/onion mixture. It's really yummy, everyone loves it.
Sherryl McCauley I was thinking the same thing!! I think if she covered it and added a little liquid to cook in it wouldn’t look dry! I would try making this with Japanese sweet potatoes and chicken with a little Sweet and sour sauce or a teriyaki sauce. If following the original recipe, a good cheese sauce would be wonderful because it’s a hearty dish!
My mom and I made this on my birthday except we used regular potatoes and made slight adjustments to the recipe which turned out really good and tasted yummy. It is a hearty meal and I also used a bit of ketchup on the meat, because it was dry. Still tasted pretty good. This is definitely one of those meals that will be added to our rotation. Thank you again, Jessa, for sharing this recipe!
I really don't understand the vile, hateful comments directed at this family. They are kind, help others and have love for each other. Are your lives so miserable that you can't stand to see a family that is standing for what they believe and having moral character? Why is it ok for everyone else to voice their opinions and thoughts, but not someone that works daily to be a good person and make the world a kinder place? This family is by no means perfect, they know that and have never said they were. They are wise enough to know that all humans mess up but that doesn't mean you stay in the gutter, you pull yourself up, move on and learn from the mistakes that have been made. The world is so full of hate, please don't add to it just because you don't agree with this family's lifestyle. If you want the world to be accepting and tolerant of you, show the same consideration for this family.
oldchickenlady Agreed. Now a days people like drama and violence, sex and all that shit combined. I mean if you hate them so much analyze your self and see if you're better.
Well said. I believe it's like the Bible says about how Christian's will be persecuted the worst. Their conscience convicts them for not living this way, so they lash out in hate. Evil hates good. I'm afraid it's only gonna get worse for all of us. God Bless.
Patricia Tisdale Wow. You people are really sick. You will have to stand before God one day and answer for every vile thing that has proceeded from your mouths.
Hey Jessa! Another good recipe. To help the potatoes cook longer without overcooking the beef. Try adding the beef after the potatoes have cooked a little bit. Just an idea. 🤗
Not every meal has to be a fancy recipe with tons of ingredients - I have learned to enjoy much more simple food since I have been very sick the last five years. Some of my favorites are literally a plain baked potato or sweet potato, if you eat this way, you earn an appreciation for the flavor of each ingredient, instead of the other things we tend to use to cover up the flavors. And I don't understand why people are freaked out about putting raw meat with the potatoes, how is it any different than cooking a pot roast? Raw meat with carrots and potatoes!
Actually, this dish would be tasty, simple and healthy. The juices from the meat will make the roasted veggies taste better and veggies roasted in olive oil taste great anyway. The Greek seasoning in the meat would add flavor as well. I've baked sweet potatoes in olive oil like this and they are yummy. Never thought of adding seasoned hamburger to the pan, but it would go well with the veggies.
I love how basic this recipe is.... something so easy and really really tasty I did add garlic powder, cumin powder and oregano along with Italian seasoning herbs and have also done it with turkey I loved it.... if you have anymore recipes please share Jesss
Actually might make this tomorrow, been looking for something different to make with beef, and this seems friendly for my 1 year old. However, I think I'll be doctoring it up with some different seasonings.
I've made this before and it was pretty good, although I substituted the sweet potatoes for russets since we don't like sweet potatoes in our house. Did you and your family like the recipe?
She probably did before the video started...had everything prepped as much as possible. They wash cans before opening them, so I can't imagine her not washing the vegetables.
jaitishow how do you know she didn’t wash the potatoes ahead of filming? Where you at her house?if you don’t have any thing nice to say don’t say anything at all
Jessa has said she is not the best cook between the sisters but I am sure she is learning every day more for her kids. I will try her recipe. Beautiful young family!
Looks like a quick and easy meal. Everyone commenting is suggesting they would of cooked the meat first I think I would as well maybe try to add some taco seasoning like one and a half packs for extra flavoring to flavor the other food inside the dish after mixed for a taste my kids would like so I could try to get them to eat some vegetables. Lol. As well as chop the onions smaller and sweet potatoes peeled and smaller for my little ones. Thank u for the video. Your baby is so adorable.
Love it! It seems simple and delicious! I think this great cooking instead of fast food! Keep them coming and by the way your baby is gorgeous! God Bless!
That looks REALLY good. I'm tempted to make that myself. And I love little Spurgeon sitting in his baby seat. EDIT: I made this recipe on this past Mother's Day. I came out REALLY well. 😍
Awesome thanks for sharing for the onions rinse under cold water it'll take some of the potency away so you won't cry or you can also try chewing gum. That always worked for when I worked at a restaurant.
The potatoes are not washed, still have mud on them. She cut the veggies too small they are all squished because they got overcooked. The meat is overcooked. Why is everyone with no sense of cooking acting like pros?
Thank you for also noticing that. Always wash your veggies before eating. Imagine all the people who have touched it before you did. And that ground beef must be so dried out. It was cooked way too long
Sal Ram wow ur rlly rude!!!!!!! It may not be perfect but it's probably a lot better than most people can do!!!!!!! Some people never cook and they order pizza every night. At least she is cooking for her family!!!!!!! Also it looked really good to me so apparently u have no clue what good food looks like!!!!!!!
I made this tonight and goodness it was amazing!!! I peeled my sweet potatoes and used olive oil, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika instead of Italian seasoning....I usually make this in the skillet but liked it so much better in the oven!
After reading all the comments on here all I can say is. Those without sin, cast the first stone. Plus she does not carry the sins of her brother. Back off
Patricia H Oh please ignorance is ignorance and those who don’t know food shouldn’t teach. She posts and she’s an adult so she’s old enough to hear that this recipe is just gross.
