The fun thing is, from the far out first shot, we knew exactly who it was because of his iconic sword. The close ups are to show us how much our boy king has aged in 5 years of hard life on the road.
So the thing with the sword, players already knew it was there. It was thrust into the world in the end cinematic of the Legion expansion, and part of the Battle for Azeroth expansion was partially dealing with the consequences of that sword. But we never fully dealt with the sword and it seemed to kind of go on the backburner for most of Battle for Azeroth and didn't even get a mention in Shadowlands or Dragonflight. When asked about it, one of the lead devs replied with "what sword", which became a meme. So for players it's not so much a big reveal, but the arrival of something that's been a long time coming. For the question: My favorite expansion was probably Legion. They added a lot of class identity in that expansion. Each class had its own base of operations, team of lore relevant NPCs, and storied artifact weapons

If you care for the interconnected lore, you need to go back and watch every CUTSCENE and CINEMATIC from warcraft 1 ALL THE WAY to the war within. You will be happy you did. Chris metzen has done an incredible job at creating an interwoven story. The burning legion, how they created the scourge - and by extension - the lich king (and how the prince of a kingdom was corrupted into being the lich king - killing his father in the process and creating the undead scourge in the process) etc, etc, etc, trust me when i say, the continuity does NOT end there. There is a lich king and there are liches - as an example. I'd happy request you do a full cutsence AND cinematic reaction from warcraft 1 - war within. Based on the cinematics you've watched, you didn't even learn the history of the orcs and how the burning legion also crafted their fate , p.s the lich kings tormented soul was crafted from an orc leader.
A lot of Warcraft 1 and 2 isn't considered canon. And a lot of Warcraft 3's story is found in game dialogues, not cinematics, so a lot of the cinematics on their own don't make a ton of sense. And a lot of the earlier WoW cinematics don't add much to the overarching story. But I'd definitely recommend watching some specific cutscenes. Namely the Human Campaign end cinematic from WC3, the end cinematic of Frozen Throne, the end cinematic from Mists of Pandaria, and all cinematics from Legion, Battle for Azeroth, Shadowlands, and Dragonflight.
