Great video David. 10-year beekeeper so now you have inspired me to make some comb honey this year. I will put some empty frames in the supers this year. FYI I have been using your idea on the feeding for winter physiology for the bees and using the Burns candy boards on top. On the last warm day in February, all hives were alive! Keeping fingers crossed this could be the second year of getting all 13 hives through the winter using your ideas. Thanks for all you do.

hi Dave, I met you in 2023 Hive Life in Sevierville, Tennessee. I've been impressed with your RU-vid and beekeeping success. After 5 years beekeeping I began my own RU-vid channel. This morning I searched for How to Make Comb Honey and this video popped up first. Just what I was looking for. Thanks.

I haven’t thought about a wax harmonica in many years. We used to buy them at our local country store for 5 cents which was a weeks allowance.

Great video. YES, I do remember the wax THINGS. Didn't until I saw it there. One thing I haven't seen you mention is how important it is to make sure the hive is level side to side. I saw that at our Beekeeper meeting.

Hi David. I grew up with the wax bottles and whistles. I am starting my first hives in April. I'm very excited and taking in all I can from books and videos. Yours are great. I just attended Bee School at the Beekeepers of Indiana meetings, so take comfort I think I know enough to get started ... but I'll probably never stop learning. Thanks again for sharing.

Thank you for showing the different kinds of comb honey. I was misled by your Headline. I was looking for the process of producing comb honey and not the kinds of comb honey. I have done regular comb honey, ross rounds, Hogg Half Comb. I've found that the best technique for getting the hive ready for producing comb honey is a method called the Juniper split. I like the modified version even better which was developed by Herman Danenhower for the Kutztown area of Pennsylvania. I would like you in the spring to do a presentation on preparing your hives for producing comb honey.

@saltysnapdragon2567
@saltysnapdragon2567 2 года назад

@TexasBeekeeper
@TexasBeekeeper 2 года назад
From what I have been seeing, at least in my area, 7 ounces has been selling for around $18. I have Ross Rounds (Although I haven't used them yet....maybe this year), and I plan to sell them for $20-$25. So it's considerably more, however you also have to keep in mind (and I hope I'm remembering these numbers correctly), that it takes about 7 pounds of honey to make a pound of wax. Now obviously there isn't a lot of wax (by weight) in comb honey, but I think it's fair to charge a bit more, since you could otherwise be using the comb as resources to give back to the hive.
@beek
@beek 2 года назад
Hard to say, different between locations but let's say a pound of honey sells for $10. Most of the time a pound of comb honey would be $15, simply because it takes a bit more work to package and handle it than liquid honey.

Some beekeepers say you need to freeze comb honey before you eat or sale it. If so why don't you have to do the same for syrup honey?
@beek
@beek 2 года назад
Good question. Yes, always freeze comb honey. The reason, there can be wax moth or small hive beetle eggs in the honey comb and they will molt into larvae after you sell your honey comb and gross out your customer. That does not happen in liquid honey.

They make the honey but we "make" honey in a jar or we "make" comb honey by cutting it to size for a container. Kinda like cows make milk, but I can say, "hey make me a glass of milk please".
