Beekeeping is amazing especially how bees produce their own wax for comb building. But how much does it really help to add additional wax to aid them in building out comb faster? Simply put a 1 lb block of wax on the inside (remove a couple frames) or outside of the hive. About 4 oz per frame so about 2 lb if you want all eight frames drawn. If they can move it around a frame to build up they can move it around a hive to build up. Just get it as close as possible, although if you wanted you could leave it out by your group yard feeder.

As much as equipment costs, they should put enough on it. Just saying. Thanks for another great vid!

It’s dark inside the hive, color is irrelevant to the bees in the dark. My question, you started with red foundation., why melt and roll it instead of just installing the foundation? I did that in my observation hive for 4-H fifty years ago. I also put blue food coloring in the 1 to 1 syrup so people could track where the bees were storing it in the comb.

As HIGH price as the supply company are charging for these frames an all the other stuff it would be better if they just stayed doing what they are doing on the frame’s because we can add extra wax to frames a lot cheaper an that way we know that it is good wax on our frames . As it looks if the wind blows to the east an not to the west they THINK THEY HAVE A REASON TO JACK THE PRICES UP .

Just saying...my wife has been making wax-rolled candles for years for her shop. I've since taken those waxed sheets and used them on their own as foundation for cut comb. You'd be surprised at how many folks enjoy the novelty of colored wax at the farmer's market. Hardcore buyers still go for the pure white stuff, but less scrupulous buyers love it.

Thank you for this. Just the other day I was asking myself if they use the wax or does the wax simply cover the plastic foundation making it more appealing to the bees.

Great experiment! I would love for you to do a very similar experiment where you put colored sugar syrup onto a hive and allow them to place it in cells in the 1st hive body. Then remove the colored sugar syrup at the same time that you add another honey super and begin feeding clear syrup. This is to see if the bees will relocate any of the colored syrup up from the bottom super to the top super. If so that has implications for all beekeepers who feed as it means that their sugar syrup feed could be getting moved from the brood boxes up into their honey supers that they end up bottling and selling.

Very interesting!! I bought some frames with plastic foundation pre-installed. The bees are very creative when they are building comb on those. I am thinking about re-waxing them heavily. Seeing your results certainly encouraged me to wax a lot more!!

In the previous video where I placed the wax on the frame I mentioned that bees do not see that spectrum of light (red). They do not need to see the wax to draw it out. It's dark in the hive.

Question: what's the difference between plastic frames and just plastic foundation in a wooden frame? Does it matter to the bees or just to the beekeeper? I'm from Germany where whe have scarlely any experience with artifical foundation.

That was sooo nerdy, I LOVED IT! Now I know why it's called 'drawing out' comb. It's like they pulled and manipulated it to where they want, I thought adding wax was to make a better base, not to actually remould it. That was such an interesting experiment and I don't even have bees, just really love the videos and watching swarms. I honestly thought there would be something about the red they wouldn't like. Red dye dosen't have the greatest history with humans; actually my nephew is allergic to it, or was to the type used when he was a child. Ketchup chips, grape soda, twizzlers, which isn't exactly health food to start with but he rarely got those. He'd turn into a super hyper mouthy nasty kid, which he wasn't normally. So if your bees suddenly tell you that you're a jerk, don't worry, it's just the red dye, lol.

Find your local beekeepers club and ask about someone who has some. Also while you are at the club meeting join and get you a mentor! That is the best advice any new beekeeper can heed.

Never seen anyone test the theory that bees reuse wax. Great experiment and proof the bees use the wax. Have seen bees avoid frames not waxed and I do have bees wax left over from the harvest. So this proves it would.m be worth the effort to put it in the frames.

@ericgandy1291
@ericgandy1291 23 дня назад
This is great. I keep seeing the debate as to whether or not they use extra wax or not. After I put some old nasty frames in my hive and while they were cleaning them up they deposited some of the dirty wax on my freshly drawn frames. adjacent to them. Then I installed frames with heavy wax and they seemed to build them out faster than they were collecting nectar. Both of those things had me believing they were reusing the wax from the frames this pretty well settles the debate for me. I guess now the question is how thick does the coat of wax need to be to fully draw out a frame. If there are different colors of wax layered in the foundation would the comb have layers of color or would they strip it in sections and the top middle area be more of the color outermost layer of rolled in wax since it is the section typically finished first. Thank you for doing this.

This was such an amazing experiment. Now you need to take it to the extreme - how much wax CAN you add before they reject it

I got two nucs in May this year. Just starting beekeeping. First nuc from May 4 has marked Queen, I see eggs, brood, Nectar, etc. Second nuc, from May 15, has no marked Queen, I see no eggs, a smattering of brood, a smattering of capped brood, no eggs visible. What do I do with that hive?
@dougjackson1841
@dougjackson1841 21 день назад
Just take a frame with eggs from the other hive (being sure not to take the queen) and give it to the other hive. They will raise a queen from one or more of those eggs unless you already have workers laying drone eggs.
