Beekeeping Extracting Honey, How To Tell When The Nectar Flow Ends

Beekeeping means extracting honey and how to tell when a nectar flow stops so you can start feeding your bees. In this video, we will take a look at both of these concerns as well as we will watch the development of an undrawn comb and how long it takes until the comb is drawn out and has capped brood.
I mentor beekeepers through a coaching program called BeeTeam6 where beekeepers call my personal cell phone, email me or send me questions via text. If you are interested here is the link:

Are you lacking the solid foundation of a basic beekeeping course? Here's a link to my Online Beekeeping courses which you can take anytime from the safety of your home.

Winter-Bee-Kinds go on sale August 1, 2021. They contain David's power punch of important winter food for bees. They also insulate and help ventilate the hive during winter. Before August. 1, 2021 the item says "Sold Out" but on August 1 that will change so you can make your purchase. They ship in late November. For 8 or 10 frame hives. Here's the link:

You are the Bob Ross of beekeeping. Keep playing with your happy little friends and teaching us these snippets on RU-vid. Interest has to come from somewhere and research has to START somewhere. I didn’t know that there are classes on beekeeping. I always thought you just grabbed a book or checked out RU-vid (thanks to today’s technology). The actual classes make sense to me.

I was told by a master beekeeper that he felt that I would be successful in tending to bees because of my attitude... Thank you for this very lovely coffee time conversation. My bees have taught me so much about them and my emotions. I approach them as nothing... I arrive calm and respectful and of course, I send them love because I truly love them. I love them so much!

Okay, you got me, full on ready to do what I rarely do anymore - I owe you a subscription because of how your extemporaneous ramble on focusing on the positive and turning aside the negative that streams along with us from our mind most every second of the day. Very nicely proposed, spot on, in my experience (73) and something i haven’t given enough thought to in quite some time. So, this new subscriber thanks you for that, as would the people driving like crazy people next to me right now while I type away…no, just kidding. All my best to you always.

Hey David, I enjoy watching your videos. I think you should do a video talking about how the bees make wax and propolis. I think most of us know and understand how they take nectar and thicken it into honey, but how do they make wax and propolis?

I really enjoyed the last bit about having a positive outlook on life. I also really appreciate how you left it up to the viewer to find a positive mental health plan that works for them. Too many people throw "God" into it. There are an infinite number of other options! Religion only exists in the minds of humans and can be a helpful tool to keep oneself on track, but the reality is we are on a spinning rock floating in space. There is no sequel to life so we might as well make it a happy experience while we're still here. Your master beekeeping wisdom and smiling face is why I have been a subscriber for the past 3-4 years. My bees and I thank you.

Nice video Dave. question for you. here in central Texas the nectar flow has basically ceased, but I have supers with with only partially capped frames. they don't seem to be be interested in capping the rest of the Honey. I've heard that sometimes they won't cap it if they are using it as a food source. how can you tell if that is the case? I would like to pull the final supers to extract them, but don't want to do it if the honey is not cured. Thanks!

You said you let cappings drain, then wash before processing the wax. After draining, I have put cappings on a tray about 30ft from the hives and let the bees clean off all the remaining honey. Is this a bad practice. ?

Yes, they were invented long ago to provide space, a "fake" floor under the brood nest area. I've ran them before, but since I use screen bottom board I feel like I'm accomplishing a fake floor. Some people love them. I did not notice any improvement.

You said you don't like burnt honey!? But since you have used a smoker the whole time getting in your hives I would say you already smoked or flavored your honey with smoke flavor yes? I just pulled my first honey few days back never have used smoke on my hive and wow what a game changer it is! I had just picked up some local honey from the side of the road and have done taste test from a dark honey and regular color and wow it's 100 percent smokeless burnt tasting honey. I am also curious why the dark honey / Black honey is turned that color they said it's from the fall? I might be thinking that it's just left in the frames over winter and that it just changes color over long period of time in it's natural state? would sure love to here back from ya the reason why? And when I would buy some honey when I was out in California from a road side honey seller the guy told me that the black honey was the best and of course was always marked up on price because of the rarity is this true? So I would always just try and get the black honey from any roadside fresh local honey source!!
@beek
@beek 3 года назад
Smoking a hive calms the bees, and if the super is capped over, the smoke would only be on the caps which are cut off. Dark honey, such as buckwheat is due to the nectar source.
