Beekeeping | How Much Honey Should You Leave On Your Hive?

Knowing how much honey to leave on your hive means inspecting and looking at each frame to see how many frames of resources are on your deep frames in the brood area. Today, I'll look at all 30 frames in this hive and I'll give it a grade based on their stored resources, telling us how busy the foragers have been. Also, we will mark a forager and evaluate how long she is staying out on foraging flights. This and much more!!
If you would like to inspect your hive with more clarity and guidance check out my Beekeeping Inspection Guide. This is an electronic .pdf download that you can print off and place in your own notebook. This is a must have if you want to get the most from your hive inspections. Here's the link:

Another tip for those hot days. I fold up a small hand towel and put inside the front of my vail. To wipe the sweat off my face. Works great. wearing a head band over the eyebrows helps as well. If you are going to be inspecting several boxes in one area, take an electrical source and a fan but keep it a good distance away so the beez don’t get sucked into it. I use an air mover because it is smaller and provides a good air flow. Happy bee sleeping!!!

Thank you for the great video. Very informative. First year beekeeper in VA here. Your video makes me feel good about my hives. In the brood box they have brood in the middle, and honey and bread all around on almost every frame. Top brood box is the same in the center, and all resources on the sides. Unfortunately, I kept feeding into the spring, and lost 4 swarms, ugh! I didn't know better. Now I do. So they are recovering in numbers, but at least they have food!

If you don't want to get your veil messy, get a camel pack and fill that with your hydration drink. I used to use my camel pack a lot, building fences on the farm. Just remember to clean it out properly after every use because hydration drinks are full of all the things pathogenic bacteria need to really go wild.

Yeah, I am so contemplating honey bee raising.. but I just don't have enough information to begin, yet. I am just now starting to give bees what they need to survive outside - like bee happy flowers and fruit trees in my yard. I am also staying away from all pesticides and only using Nematodes in my yard to kill bugs and beetles. I do not know enough about controlling small hive beetles, but I am learning.

Putting the supers on early is great unless your bees have issues with moths or beetles. In a world without these pests invading their homes, you could leave the supers on all year around. In this reality .. it's a balancing act. Not giving the bees more space than they need so they don't have the burden of having to protect that extra space, but then giving them the space they do need to expand.
@davidthompson5845

Another great video. When you say you leave the supers on all year, do you leave the queen excluder on all year also? I know the most time you do not have excluders but I think I seen one in this video. Also I remember the little wax cola's that came with sugar liquid inside that you talked about in one of your other videos. That's when you could sell the glass cola bottles back to the stores for 2 cents a piece. Thanks

Could you define: bee bread, nectar, honey, pollen, and the different components of the apiary as well as the hive itself? Your site is fascinating and so interesting. Also, how expensive is it to get a starting hive? Does a bee keeper have to start with more than one hive? A lot of questions but it would probably help a lot of us novices. Thanks.

I am a little confused because you say to never continue to feed your bees once you have added honey supers. But in this video you say if the colony is lacking in enough resources in the deep boxes that you should should feed them more protein and nutrition even if you have already added a honey super. Hi David, I'd love to have your Guide! Can you post the link again? I also have a couple questions. We have a colony in our basement rafters, and I have purchased a hive and gear (which I'm not sure exactly what everything does). I'm prepping my bee vacuum, and will have everything set up to rescue them by Thursday/Friday this week coming. I have a couple short videos on my page with questions in them. Not sure if you have time to watch, but I'll ask some here also. 1. In your video here, would they have placed more honey cells in the lower boxes had the super been off? 2. Is it a "good time of year" for rescuing? 3. Will the rescue (during this time) fatally disrupt their viability for winter? 4. Would a cut out be preferred over a trap-out? What if I can't find the queen? ...with brood, will they make a new queen? 5. Do the black foundations go in the first or second box? 6. What is used to mark a bee? That's it for now, I'm sure I'll have more!! I plan to post videos of this whole process for my grandkids!
@beek
@beek 3 года назад
Hi Julie, wow, you have undertaken a huge and very complex project! I mean this is very ambitious. You need to take my online basic course, if you haven't, as a crash course/boot camp to help get your ready for your rescue. The queen excluder goes above the larger brood boxes and under the honey supers. To answer your questions above, you'll always get more honey with more supers on the hive. It is a good time to rescue the bees. Trap outs have never worked for me. The queen is very unlikely to leave the area in a trap out attempt. This "rescue" could disrupt their ability to overwinter. You will HAVE TO find the queen no matter what! If you transferred eggs, they would try to raise a new queen if you lost the original. I have no idea about your black foundation or which box they go in. Usually the color doesn't make any difference, just the size. Large foundation goes in the brood boxes and smaller in the honey super boxes. Queen marking pens are used to mark queens. If you are not currently a beekeeper, I strongly recommend you ask one or two additional, very experienced beekeepers to assist you in removing the colony from your home and placing them into your hive. It would be better to place them in your hive and move them 3 or 4 miles away for 3 weeks, the place the hive back in your yard because THE BIGGEST ISSUE is going to be keeping the bees from going back to their spot in your house. Since you are placing them so close, they will all try to re-gather at the entrance on your house they are using now.

It’s been about two weeks since I’ve added a new super to my hive and the bees still haven’t drawn out comb on any of the frames. There’s plenty of resources in the 2nd and 1st deep boxes, though to the extent that I’m concerned that the queen is out of room to lay. I spotted very few eggs and larvae during my last inspection. I’ve noticed that some of my foragers are flying up to a half mile from the hive (near my garden which is 1/2 mile from my apiary) how do you account for the distance variable? (Or is there a mathematical average flight that is used as a base?) sorry-retired physicist/ now shepherd, beekeeper, rabbit and egg producer…inquiring minds and all that…. BTW-I made a newbie mistake that you mentioned after my hives were established…I put two deeps (deep +honey super) together for my new package of bees (x2) with a queen excluder between them. I thought since it was just about into the flow (which just started in earnest) and I am feeding them to help them get started, that they would need the room. My hope is that they will fill it out before June 15th and I will be able to make splits before Fall for Winter if they make queen cells. Am I getting ahead of the game? We have another 3 months of flow as I planted 3 seasons of blooms and our climate is lush and heavy growing like Spring growth through mid August. We’re in bit of a Goldilocks zone.

I have a question...we got our honey bees in the end of May, and beginning of June. We put on the supper box for the one hive and they are putting wax, and pollin on it. I took one frame from the bottom two boxes that are full of honey. I have a bunch of anxiety and wonder if that was okay or wrong.... could you give us some advice? I've been feeding them sugar water, I just want them to have enough space to put in eggs and pollen....any ideas?

Peter, bees are like other pets or hobbies. Sometimes, little to no effort is needed. But other times, everything goes wrong and it is so difficult. I totally get it. Sometimes I can make a video without any effort. Other times, I struggle for days and days and nothing works out.

Just curious what your thoughts on natural beekeeping and long hives is
@beek
@beek 3 года назад
If you mean not using chemicals to treat for mites...IF you can keep your levels down without chemicals that is best. But if you cannot, chemicals (acids) are needed, just like with blood pressure. If you cannot keep your blood pressure down through diet and exercise, medicines are needed. I'm cool with different types of hives as long as you can manage them the same.

How much bee bread do you want to go into winter with? That's a lot of space being used that could be food for overwintering.
@beek

That is debatable. But seeing a frame or two makes me feel better. But I do not have to worry about this because in the winter, I feed them my Winter-Bee-Kinds.
