I keep bees and do construction in southern oregon. Being in a bee suite is no joke in hot weather. You are a strong man. Thank you for your info and experience. Our bees have been doing well this year so far. I hope your bees are too.

People keep telling me how strong I am. I cycle alot up steep hills, but on a cycle even though you are peddling hard, you have a wind created by your speed. Under the bee suit...zero!!

I started with only mediums 5 years ago. I was a beekeeper in Germany back in the 90ies. I was so surprised when I saw the two different sizes here. I would do all deep frames, but my back says no.
@johnbonds5084
@johnbonds5084 Месяц назад
I decided from the start to use 8-frame medium boxes for everything. You could transition to mediums by selling your deep frames as deep 5 frame nucs and replace with mediums. Just cut off the bottoms of your deep boxes to the medium dimensions. You end up with a 3 in shim that can be used lots of places in the apiary as feed shims etc. Your back will thank you. Love your videos keep them coming.

Thank you David for all your help. I just found you on RU-vid about five weeks ago. You’ve been very helpful. I used to be very nervous around my bees, but that is going away after watching your videos. I was wondering, when you hold queen bees or even worker bees in your videos, are you ever afraid of being stung?

I use 1 deep and 1 medium for my brood boxes, but have considered switching to all mediums to make it easier to swap brood frames. I know a beek nearby who uses only mediums both for flexibility & weight reasons and has great success.

I know, I'm starting to love the idea. Maybe I should saw the bottoms off the deeps and get them to medium size if it doesn't ruin the handles.

David, YES it is warm and humid today, almost 100 heat index BUT on the big river nice breeze. You MUST take breaks every 10 to 15 minutes plus hydrate!

Thanks David. At 67 starting bee keeping last year I was fortunate to have a mentor talk me into using all mediums. I researched bee keeping for many years but got real serious about the research 2 years ago. Some how I didn’t pay attention to how much the boxes weigh when full of honey, nor did I realize how much honey can be collected per frame. Really glad I took the advice of using mediums for all my equipment. Cheers

I just bought a double width "long" National Brood box, to have as my base brood box, and then a brood box and 3 supers in parallel to each other on top of that. Excited to see how that plays out

David, I’m sure your sister the retired nurse would tell you to stay hydrated and pass on the hive inspection in that kind of heat. Some things are not worth going to the E.R. For. Be careful and take care of yourself.

I prefer to stick to a single size box for brood and honey supers. Ease of using assets, flexibility, get out of trouble easier, ease of buying kit.

If you mix boxes (presumably mediums) between brood and honey supers, how do you ensure that frames used previously for brood during varroa treatment don't end up as honey frames? (UK based beekeeper using Nationals).

Need to keep them designated as such.

I've been keeping bees for 14 years (not counting when I did it with my dad as a teenager) and I use all 8 frame mediums. So much easier to move around but I'm in California so the winters are not as drastic nor the summers as hot as you have. You were making me sweat just watching! I highly recommend all mediums.

Whats your opinion on letting some Hives swarm to add more bee colonies to the local area / wild?
@beek
@beek Месяц назад
I guess I'm not sad when it happens because of the reason you stated unless a beekeeper lives in a populated area, then it's best to avoid swarms going out into the population of people

Hi David, loving your video as ever from here in the UK. Let’s me first say how sad for the US of that awful attempt to eliminate Mr Trump on Saturday. On bees I have a hopelessly queenless hive. I do have 3 capped over queen cells. Do I prick out two cells to let one survive , but which one? OR do I let the three hatch out and leave them to fight it out land hope that she completes a mating. All the best to you and thinking of all the USA. CHARLES
@beek
@beek Месяц назад
Hey Charles, good to hear from you and thank you for the good wishes. I too hope all goes well with your capped cells. I'd leave all three and see who wins.

Tip number 6 about a failing queen made me think about mine. The queen seems to not be doing so well because I haven't seen eggs in about 3 weeks. The bees also don't seem to be building towards the other empty frames. Could my queen be slowing down because there's no established comb in the other 4 or 5 frames?
@wstepnout7215
@wstepnout7215 Месяц назад
I wonder if your bees don’t have enough nectar and resources in the environment to build more comb so the Queen can lay.
@Brandor667
@Brandor667 Месяц назад
I have the hive on a forested property in Ontario Canada. There's all kinds of flowers like; white clover, black-eyed susans, columnbine, bergamot(i think). Lack of resources is a possibility but I can't say for certain. I did an inspection about 30mins before writing this comment, and I might have seen some eggs on the original brood frames, and maybe some larva where the bees are slowly drawing comb. I'm going to look again tomorrow and take some pics to see if I see anything.

Could a deep be added right now even in dearth as long as they are being fed ?

It can be added but how soon or IF they will drawn out the frames is iffy.

I suggest inspecting your brood area every two weeks so that means you'll have to temporarily remove the supers in order to get to the brood area then place them back on when the inspection is over.
