Beekeeping inspections are off limits in the winter, but today we'll take advantage of a warm winter day to inspect a small, struggling hive.
Keeping honey bees as a beekeeper is such a hoot. I mean, being a beekeeper is so rewarding. We need honey bees to pollinate of food and crops. Honey is so delicious. I hope you will consider the joy of becoming a beekeeper and start beekeeping today.

Last Saturday it was around 55 degrees. I went to the shop to finish building some hive stands and walked out to the hives. The girls were flying a lot on this bright sunny day. It was about all I could do to keep myself from going in and poking around. So I just sat at a distance, watching them come and go. Nothing was coming back into the hive. I think they were on cleansing flights. But just sitting and watching....a relaxation for some reason..😊

In SE coastal Virginia, the maples are in full bloom. The tree in my neighbors yard is buzzing from all my bees gathering pollen. What joy to listen to.

I agree that beekeeping is a great pastime. People say to me that it is so much work. I say yes, but fun and good work. I can be out there for extended hours and just lose track of time. I love it. I love the opportunity to show my bees to people who are interested. Your warm days gets me excited!

I also live in central Illinois. In that cold snap 3 of our 7 hives sadly perished. As I was going through the frames looking for anything I can throw in the freezer to give back to the other hives in spring, i das about 1/4 to 1/3 frame of eggs. I had no idea the queen laid that much in winter and I was baffled, hah. Hope everyone’s hives are doing well!

Hello David. I have COPD and MAC'S lung disease. I am 2nd year BK and just doing on my own (on disability so not much income) have 1 hive that made it through the winter (no mite treatment) and planning on several splits. Best time of my day is sitting and watching girls work. Not really in it for the money but was able to sell some honey from last year and put into equipment for this spring

@@beek the fact that you replied to me made my day, thank you! I tested for mites in July and got 1 and 3 per 300 in my two hives. Used formic pro as the label says and got mite counts of 0 and 0 in September. Lots of honey in the hive but the clusters were in the bottom deep so I think they just got too cold with the second deep on top.

I agree David. I'm a counselor and beekeeping is on a list of examples I tell clients about to help them find ways to move out of their head and back into their lives. Checked my bees this past Sunday! They were bringing in the pollen! Excited for the spring here in Oklahoma!

Ha David good video enjoyed it I have stacks the way I over winter there is 4-5 boxes on most of my hives the empty boxes are on the bottom like mike palmer in vermont, does I do not have storage space to store them. It does fine I wrap and wrap the hole thing it has worked out well for me I think it helps with swarming as well for the most part the queen moves down and when I do the first inspection if I move rotate boxes the empties stay on the bottom till i need them hope u have a blessed day

Thank you for doing these short but very good videos, I had bees for years and I enjoy watching your videos, I worked all over the country and had little time to mess with them, I'm retired now and they keep me busy, so far looking very good I put out pollen substitute anytime it's warm and they go for it. I checked my hives a couple of days ago(just activity, no lid lifting) , and I noticed that they were pulling in what looks like pollen but I don't see how anything could blooming yet. I'm about one hardiness zone south of you in Missouri. I'm kinda baffled to what they are finding right now. Maybe they found some cattle protein tubs at my neighbors. I just don't know.

I'm in the UK and I still had drones in December, so my queen must have been laying. But now there is only very small cluster left. I think they used their stores up too quickly. Not sure if the queen is still there. It's not warm enough to take frames out.

If I have late drones it usually means that hive is trying to raise a queen. Could they have failed to raise a queen or she mated poorly from a lack of late drones and the hive dwindled?

The biggest advantage to an inner cover is making the top easier to remove.

I noticed that entrance is quite large for the small colony. Wouldn’t it be better to be smaller? Just wondering. I keep mine small to control robbery.

Probably, sometimes a large entrance doesn't matter but mice can be very destructive. And it has a screen bottom board that is not blocked. 😃

It’s amazing how the dry pollen sticks to the bees as soon as the get close to it. I once had a wagon of corn in the machine shed, the bees totally covered the corn and cleaned all the corn dust off the kernels till they were shiny clean!

Well if you have a horse you have to keep them away from the bees because I feed the winter be kind he distorted two of my hives after he smelled them
