Sounds like you are describing Modern in St. Louis. They also added to your equation, start a war with Side Project; copyrighting their name and using a similar logo design while ~3 miles apart from each other.
Ok so I never heard of the show and I went in with a bias after watching your video but I couldn't agree anymore with you, lol she sucks as a host, the show just doesn't hold my interest even though Im very fascinated with beer and beer culture...Im surprised none of those hipsters were making their own version of PBR...lol
I was tipped by a colleague for the show, but I think this is better :) don't think I'll give it a try. Regarding InBev: same is happening here in the Netherlands with Heineken, buying up breweries and so extending the standard 'Heineken craft beer card' for all contracted caterers, pubs etc. I've noticed you have some Belgian beers in the shot? Are those well available and affordable in the USA? I'm thinking of making craft beer trades with USA to get some awesome beers who are not/hardly available here, which obviously works the other way around. For example, it's not hard to get a Westvleteren Xll around here. Any tips/comments are welcome :).
Ha. This show is on Viceland, which is basically a cable channel about smoking weed. Luckily, Vice News on HBO is still hard hitting. That said, she is terrible and the show is completely uninspired. NOTHING touching on current craft community status or the brewers making waves. She sucks. Show sucks.
I think this is very similar to what happens with tattooing where a world full of styles, interesting characters, and history is taken over by corporate interests and gets reduced to manufactured drama, and idiotic bullshit.
That's rough. Conceptually, it's kind of cool - the competition part. But she's rough as a host and her VO's drag. It's harder to carry the energy in the studio...but even in person, you can tell that she's having to drag herself through some of this. Who knows...maybe it's the InBev pressure weighing her down. It just feels forced a lot of the time. The NY one - The log thing...well known from the Nordic brewing tradition. The kveikstokk holds the yeast between brew sessions. The log is just a strange adaptation by someone that is just hilarious... "I'M CONFLICTED!" Yeah, buddy. Yeah , you are.
I'd say that's a pretty fair assessment. Not everyone is meant to be on camera and it's tough to communicate excitement in the brewing process...which isn't exactly glitz and glamour.
Nice video Chris, I love your honesty. On the other hand how did you like the Noble Mosaic Shower. I picked up a few bottles from Noble when I was in Socal last as well as there Hostel Intent. They just did a colab with Fieldwork out of Berkeley CA called Power Glove that was really good and they have another one called Punch Out that is drooping soon.
OMG the girl who does the who does the show is so UNBELIEVABLY boring. like.. get excited woman! you get to do beer for a living. I practicaly fall asleep everytime i try to watch the show
What is going on here, I just watched about 5 minutes of beerland and I felt like I was in 8th grade watching a boring old documentary!!!!! ZZZZZ This is horrible. You are 100% correct, this show is lame.
I agree while it is dry ,no need for hate they offer her a gig and she took it and got paid and in general VICE is a pretty solid channel outside of this beer show
When I first started drinking craft beer, I started with Golden Road because they are probably the most accessable local beer in Los Angeles (i.e. they're in every grocery store). However as I learned about and began to enjoy other local breweries, (Smog City, Monkish, Three Weavers, Bottle Logic, etc), I soon realized how uninspired, and unremarkable Golden Road was. I've never had a Golden Road beer and said anything other than, "Yup, that sure is beer."
Boycott InBev products! Even if it's a good beer, still boycott it. Their beers are getting too much shelf space at the grocery stores, crowding out local craft brewers. This would make a good video, Chris!
Their beer is ok..they have a triple IPA called The Wolf Mother which is pretty good. I used to hit up Golden Road before they sold out. The show did suck and I think they should have judged these brewers based on the style of their beer. Could have had a best IPA brewer or best Stout brewer etc. I think you should have your own show on TV Chris. ROCK ON MAN!
1st off...GoldenRoad beers are not great (in my opinion) Weak IPA, bleh Brown Ale.... Vice reached out to several homebrew clubs in the SF Bay Area... Our club didn't want anything to do with it. Cheers
Meg Gill is a business woman, not a brewer. Sometimes I wonder if she signed something when the brand sold to AB that obligates her to do these kind of things. AB recognizes that as a young woman she has multiple levels of appeal that you don’t normally have in the male dominated craft brewing scene. Whatever... she’s leading the fight against the real enemy, the wine and spirits market. 🙄
I have only watched the first episode so far. Was hoping for better. My best explanation is that it is like a car wreck that you just can't tear your eyes away from. Was thinking the same thing when she was bitching about the guy's pils not being clear. I too miss BrewDogs. I think in their case, maybe they have been too busy with expansion, to do the show....not sure.
Thank you for bringing up the criticism of the cloudy pilsner. That was the point in the show that it lost me and I knew I wouldn't watch it again. The fact that the guy made a lager on a homebrew scale is impressive enough. Homebrewing deserves a way better outlet. I'm sure there's a better host (male or female) out there that can bring across the passion that homebrewers have for their product
I didn't think it was terrible (more completely bland) but I found her to be very robotic, lacking charisma and it was quite awkward to watch. I like some of Vice's stuff and I was genuinely intrigued by the concept but Beerland just fails in its execution, which is a shame. I too was annoyed by the cloudy pilsner comment lol
awkward to watch is a great way ro put it. I dont care that much about beer, but like learing about things I could not figure out for the life of me why they would have her host... even if she is the Golden Road Lady
I am in the strong minority but I really like this show. Keep in mind that i have zero interest in the minutae of beermaking. I thi k the show is well shot and ENTERTAINING. Critics should shoot their own show if they think is is so easy and can be better executed.
Your right! If you dont plan on learning anything and just love shows about beer its OK. She is kinda easy on the eyes! Brew dogs like you said is great!
tell us what you really think of Vice!! lol Sad that they turned "homebrewing" into a real shit TV show. I did homebrew for a couple years and it is not easy to make great beer. Thanks for the review on the show!!
You don’t need expensive equipment to make clear beer as a home brewer, you don’t even need much time. Use Whirlfloc, get a great cold break as quickly as you can, cold crash when fermentation is complete and use gelatin, set the keg in the keezer and DON’T touch the damn thing...I have clear beer in two or three weeks after fermentation is complete. If ya lagered a Pils for even just a month, it would be very easy to get crystal clarity. The show’s not that good, but Meg was right to ding the clarity. You don’t make clear beers buddy?
I miss the Brew Dogs show as well. I really wish we could get a proper craft beer show, or even a comedy/drams set in small brewery. It may not have been perfect, but I really enjoyed Drinking Buddies, and would like to see something like that put into a weekly TV series.
Thank you!! I thought it was just me. I was excited to see this show, then watched the first one and felt the same way. Craft beer deserves a better version of this show.
Totally agree, the NY ep I feel she picked that magic log weirdo because he was such a stereotypical BK hipster instead of the beer she really reacted to which was that everything bagel beer. She seems like a self loathing beer geek and I use the term beer geek loosely.
"Gill continued, “the definition (of craft) should really be about "protecting the quality" so homebrewers "can't brew a bunch of sh*t in their bathtub and call it craft." For one, homebrewers don’t make beer in bathtubs, sh*t is brewed in toilets, and homebrewers don’t make craft beer, they make homebrew."
Just finished watching all four or five shows,I liked it! Made me want to grab a cold beer every time! Sure, Meg is an airhead and comes off condescending as fuck but I think it was kind of entertaining. I actually like Meg's personality, she doesn't come off as whoreish, which I respect since she's obviously very attractive. If the show keeps promoting Golden Road it is because the beer to win the competition was to be brewed by Golden Road, I think it makes sense to keep bringing up Golden Road. I've had several of the Golden Road beers and visited the brewery, neither are super impressive but worth checking out.

"Hey.. let's go.. off into the desert.. and ride some ATVs, and drink some beers, and listen to some punk music. It's like WTF?!?!?!" LMAO!!!!!! I spit my beer out when he finished saying that. Toooo good. Couldn't agree more about the show. Cheers!
I totally get everyone is going to have opinions about a topic they are passionate about. Personally I enjoyed it as the light entertainment that it is. The show is throwing a wide net, which is what you need to do to have large groups of people interested. Not everyone will have the knowledge of a lot of you hard-core brewers. I literally mean this in a positive way; why not use your army of beer heads to make a version you would like to see? Happy brewing dudes.
YUP...IT SUCKS ...there have been so many bad beer shows,,sorry. but .those brewdog guys sucked too...annoying as fuck .If you watch Bar Rescue or Pawn Stars you understand why and how a show works . This is like a kid from the local high school AV department running around with camera with no idea how to structure a show . . Mashed Potatoes...yes they would be insulted ...lol . I honestly do not understand how shows like this survive,,,jesus...fucking depressing thinking that other shows got dumped to pick this . How bad could they have been????!!!!! You have a great channel..keep it up ..cheers !
This review could have been so much shorter, as in, "Its Inbev, hate it." Discounting the consultation of a current/former GI brewer simply because it is Inbev supports that angle. While Meg could use some polish in front of the camera, I found the critiques just fine. I'm bored with the shows that are just all rahrah scripts (but there is plenty to improve on these ones). A lot of homebrewers are making Pils that are much clearer than that beer without expensive equipment. There is nothing wrong with suggesting he think about it. Yeah, the show is pretty much a GR commercial and that gets old rather quickly. But if any kind of wide appeal is targeted, the human interest side of going to a party off the grid or surfing is expected. The .00001% of the population that wants 22 minutes of drilling down on someone's HERMS system wont support the show growth. I could have made this comment a lot shorter too....Its Inbev, you need to hate it. Keep the reviews coming. I'll watch.
Lol well said could not agree more about this show! Their beers at best r mediocre, InBev thing makes sense didn't understand why I would see such wide distribution out here in California.
I enjoy it, actually. Nice to see actual homebrewing being celebrated. Definitely better than the formulaic and contrived Brewdogs & DFH shows, which were more about promoting their own products.
I had their wolf among weeds IPA and for all the hype the show gave golden roads, I remember saying, eh its ok but would I get it again for 11.99 a 4 pack, NO!
World class assessment, m8. These are my exact thoughts and opinions on the show. I appreciate your channel, too, homie!! Keep hitting us with them vids!
After watching this I searched out episodes of Beerland. Meg is void of charisma, drab and a very loose concept for the show. I'm all for females representing the beer world in mainstream media but couldn't they find someone better than her? I'd much prefer to see a couple of Beertube's own like Nitch or Sarah Warman heading up this type of show.
Exactly, at least it wasn't some fella with a turn-ups, no socks and a top-bun. I'm a fan of the programming on Munchies but the level of wankiness is sometimes unbearable.
brew dogs awesome; Zane lamprey? awesome. your rant awesome. I only watched the Hawaii one cause it's my home, but it sucked. thank you. Let's get some more Hawaii craft brews out there. Or at least have Maui brew distribute all their Stone sh*t to all the islands. keep it up. Waikiki brew co aint bad, as well as, always and probably the best in HI- Big Island Brewhouse. Let me know what you think?
intro is cool, it's a lil more subdued, I'm sure it will grow on me. i didn't know anything about beerland, and, golden road is solid beer, i haven't drank one since i can remember, if that says anything. haha, lot's of amazing beer gets my attention. cheers
you know what guys, I think she has a f****** hangover! like all day everyday! her brain is mush! we all know that feeling, Monday morning when you're trying to talk to a customer... get some sleep Meg!
I really dig most of Viceland as a channel. Weediquette is phenomenal, Business of Life is great, Desus and Mero can be really good. Their journalism shows are still top notch but I agree they've headed more down a path toward "hipsters". Also, Beerland is terrible. Meg is monotoned, no personality, no excitement, and boring. The episode with the guy fermenting with a log he found in the park? Give me a break.
Enjoyed your rant and passion. Unfortunately, I never heard of this show and because of your rant, I wanted to see for myself. So...subversive advertising at it's best I guess.
I liked that show too (brew dogs) but it was a very american style of show, a whole lot of repetition. Aimed at people with the attention span of a goldfish.
Just finished my second episode of this show and yeah, it sucks pretty bad. This is really not a show about beer, its just a political statement. So far I've heard complaints about the new administration and some anarchist dude, also, a gay woman that brews beer. Whatever... I'm pretty much done with this show.
