That's how it was for me the first 3-4 months of beekeeping, would never find the queen but would find eggs so I knew she was in the colony at least within the past 3 days. Even the orientation of the egg in the cell tells you approximately how many days ago it was laid.
Trying not to be rude but you wrote expect instead of except Don't worry everyone makes mistakes and I pointed it out so you won't make this mistake again :)
Bee’s essentially breathe through their 'skin' on their abdomen. The way you we’re holding her probably covered up too much of the skin, essentially suffocating her until she went unconscious. But since you realized and stopped holding her like that, she was able to breathe again and eventually woke up.
I needed a good laugh tonight. I have been in stitches the last 20 minutes reading these comments. Long live the Queen. How could he tell if he was holding her too tight with those leather gloves like he was holding a falcon? The hive is very well structured. Everyone has a job to do...but above all their duties, is to protect he queen. They die when they sting someone. Not so with hornets they will just keep stinging you time but time again. Yur all a great group. Save the Queen. Hugs, Eloy AZ
@@ralphbrown359 protecting the queen is #1! But honestly, without the gloves, especially with an aggressive hive - he would have probably been stung multiple times. I would LOVE to have domicile hives I could work without needing to wear gloves! Leather gloves makes the sensitivity of touch MUCH less, but necessary. Maybe clove oil on the hands would prevent stings? Food for thought. 🤔
Why was I so gripped and rooting so hard for the queen to come out of it!? I'm so glad she came around. I know this is an older video but still I was enthralled
I wouldn't say "caring" necessarily - they're ensuring the safety of their hive. They will actually begin to bully her and commit mutiny once she has stopped laying eggs or if she lays only infertile eggs! Also, fun fact, all worker bees are females, so the bee checking on her was probably a girl bee!
I used to be scared when I got my first hive but over time learned that honey bees are very chill if you check them in good conditions. They do get pissy on cloudy and rainy days but I just don't mess with them then. I use to wear a suit but now I got to where I will go out with shorts and a tshirt with no gloves.
With gloves you dont realize how much pressure you are applying to her tiny body. They are fearless yet fragile . Handle w care. Awesome how the bees come to comfort her and dont give up til they see her move. Thanks. Blessings.
Never hold the queen by the abdomen. Hold by the thorax and without gloves so you can modulate the pressure on the thorax. Don’t jab with marker, just hold gently until ink comes out.
Mistakes yes, but if you’re not sure how to do it, ask someone or get someone to do it for you that does. And holding them by their abdomen can damage her eggs. But lessons are learned this way and I doubt that will happen again. And not only that it will be a lesson for other beginner beekeepers on what not to do.
won't he need gloves so he doesn't get stung but the bees, He has had experience holding bees but I don't think he had that much experience marking them?
@@XxShade_FrostxX Not at all. If your colony is calm you can take out the queen gently with 2 fingers (but as people already wrote at her thorax, not her abdomen) and then mark her. If you don‘t feel comfortable doing so, there‘s equipment you can buy for a few €s which helps in marking the queen. This guy clearly didn’t handle bees that often yet. It is also recommended to train marking queens with drones beforehand. They can’t hurt you and they are of no real worth for the colony at most times, so you can sacrifice a few.
the queen was in shock. especially when something went on her back. other bees took the stress away and the smell of the honey from the bees helped. pay attention to some of the bees trying to collect the honey from their heads. the queen is always pregnant and easily stressed
I really love seeing informative comments from people who knows something about beekeeping. I love how they try to teach you and give you tips because you were still new to this and also, people who doesn't know anything about beekeping learns from them and also from your videos. Now, that is what I call a healthy relationship. Keep up the great videos!
Very sweet. Things like this make me feel guilty even killing an insect bothering me in my home. One bee went under her to make her stand. I’ve seen monkeys and horses do that and now bees?? It’s too much for my heart to know that we are so connected to everything and we the highest specie walk around like morons not knowing this obvious truth.
@@butterpecan5642 What does that mean? It only means something to those in your club. That means it’s a human concept...an idea. Human concepts are fuelled not by wisdom but by capitalism. Soul is a government religion word. I’m not in that club. Therefore I will continue to ‘feel’ unregulated by the latest social media baloney forced through algorithms into my space. I saw love in the insect world .. let me have that.
I'm not surprised by the Queen's reaction. How'd you feel if Godzilla came by, stirred up your house and carried you off for some unknown purpose? Bet you'd pass out or drop dead from a heart attack too from sheer fright.
wow if you ever had any doubt about how social bees are or wether or not they communicate with each other watching this should erase your doubts. they obviously were communicating that she was in trouble and needed help then they obviously were trying to figure out how to help her and then put it into action and revived her. THAT WAS AMAZING! Thank you!
Gosh that was fantastic to watch thank you so very much for sharing this with us. I was holding my breath didn’t realise it until she started moving. Beautiful to watch. Cheers cherieK 🦋🌈🐿🇦🇺
I'm allergic to bees, so I tend to stay as far away as possible in person... but with that being said, I still think it's fascinating how they work as a colony.... I slowed my play back speed down to the slowest speed to watch her worker bees work to save her life... I have to say that is one of the most enduring, intense, and magical moments, that I have been able to watch happen in nature!!!! Most people see bees as a bother, and in all honesty like I said earlier in my comment, I tend to stay away simply because I am allergic, but they truly are wonderful, and very loyal little creatures!!!! Sometimes we forget to slow down, and truly admire and take in nature and all it's beauty!!!! Even in the smallest of creatures you can see compassion, instinct, determination, and care when things get tough.... This was truly a beautiful sight to see, in my eyes!!!!
Rule number one, when inspecting a frame that has the queen on it, ALWAYS hold it over the colony in case she drops. Rule number don't walk 20 yards with the queen squished in your gloved fingers. Put her in a queen marking tube (like a foam syringe) and do it at the hive.
I have a terrible phobia of bees. Watching them, hearing them .. I have such anxiety I can't do anything. I decided to watch your video in an attempt to face my fear. I freaked out a lot. But when the queen seemed to die, I found myself panicking for a different reason. I don't know that I can face a bee face to face but I found myself caring for the queen in the video. Thank you for your time.
My mum is terrified of bees too. I keep trying to get her to watch videos online but she can't even do that so well done to you, you are braver than she is!
@@unicornmaster372 Of all those, the only one you really have a reason to be afraid of are the wasps. Those are agressive little bastards. Hornets are chill although being much bigger/impressive than the other ones, and bees are really sweet creatures.
I think she went into a kind of paralysis where she couldn't move. Once the other female bees started to check on her she came out of it slowly. They have a queen bee trap that makes it easy to mark them without holding them in your hands that you might want to look into. I'm happy to see that they are no longer being as aggressive with you as they were before. Keep up the good work, it's always a learning process.
Well... the queen basicly is their mother. She may not be the mom of this hive. But she still coordinates everything and took over the place of the mom. Its as if the new queen adopted a whole hive and cares like a real mother
That is, before they kill her. Once the bees begin making queen cells, that's the start of the execution process. They make cells, she lays eggs. The strongest of all the eggs will hatch and grow in about 2 weeks, then they leave the cell. First, the new queen kills her sisters. Then she kills her mother with the help of the colony workers, and the cycle continues. A bit macabre, but that's life.
How many of you pulled your phone closer to see the queen. Thanks for your cool videos. I love the kids getting involved and enjoying themselves doing mom and dad chores
I don't think it was necessary to remove her from the hive to mark her. You can put a dot on her while she is walking around in the hive. Sometimes I feel like in the process of filming people make things harder than they would be otherwise. Not a criticism just an observation.
Even I know that most insects breath with their Abdomen, so with the Coated Leather Gloves holding her pretty much by her lungs, she was suffocating. When you see the abdomen moving in and out, that is breathing.
@@escapefromny2012 I mean it more as 'even someone who has no direct experience with any kind of insects such as these, remembers from school learning that most insects breath using their abdomens' not meant to be arrogant, but more as a statement of it is part of basic science teachings from my elementary classes, over 20 years ago.
@@terryfuldsgaming7995 he was also holding her for more than a minute or two, so it could have been a mix, agreed that it could have also been the chemicals from the pen when she was able to breathe again(as he pulled her out to hold her, walked over to the truck(an undefined distance away) marked her, then we saw the effect). The cold of the gloves could also have an effect, though he did have them on for more than some minutes before, so cold is a little bit less likely. But also, at least I was only trying to say a possibility that is basic knowledge, not trying to measure the length of my non-existant appendage amongst others having a discussion. Thank you.
@@skygard49 not consistently you can’t. Risking animals/bugs lives for negligence/laziness is not cool. I have insane accuracy but my fingers get twitchy sometimes and I’m in good health. It’s just humans aren’t able to have that precision for a bee in huge gloves. Edit: he should practice using tools, not gloves to pick up bees/transport them.
Someone mentioned he covered her breathing holes with his gloves which was suffocating her. It makes sense. I hope he learned and saw the comment so this doesn’t happen again. :)
That one, lone, workerbee, luckily, stayed by the queen. If it had not, there's a good chance that precious queen wouldn't have made it. I think it called out to the other workers to help revive her.😊 So glad she made it.😊
I know diddly squat about bees but out of the comment theories of "her abdomen didn't get enough air" and "the marker alcohol made her high" I tend to side with the former since she was already limp when he started marking her.
Amazing to see the Queen bee survive, thanks for the video I guess we all learnt a lesson here, not easy to have a replacement queen delivered quickly and get accepted by the others as well, could put the whole hive in jeapardy. Worth a second look at what happened back then .
Wow. This was incredible to watch. I’m so glad you caught this on video. It was so amazing watching the attendant bees come over to assess the situation and help her out. Any chance you have a video with the whole process? I would love to see it.
Them when they see 100000 bees: Oh there getting aggressive Me with a 1 bee that is tiny and does not know how to sting and that’s 6 feet away from me: HELP IM BEING ATTACKED AHHHH!
my suggestion would be that you bring all your tools close to whatever hive you are working with so you are not taking the frames so far away from the hive. We built a little frame holder for our frames/bars(we actually have topper-bar hives.), which allows us to move rungs around and create space in the hive without moving the bars far from the hive.
Maybe the paint drop felt like, what a dog feels the first time you put a jacket on them, they just get stunned and fall over until the get used to it. Or like cats with harnesses
That was so beautiful. I’ve always had a deep love and respect for our little honey merchants. I even petitioned my fathers wife to grow Cosmo’s at the kitchen window when I noticed they were making a bit of a come back in our area so I could watch them all during the summer months! They seem to love them. Now she saves the seeds every fall and just replants them. We have to help our little friends more than ever. The wonderful comments give me hope that I’m not the only one who cares ❤️
My neighbour is a beekeeper. When I do yardwork and get a little too loud i get stung. But I don't mind. Free accupunture session. I can listen hours to my neighbour sharing his passion with me. The information I got so far made me realize that bees are so freakin awesome. Way more intelligent than people....They really are Gods little workers.
Goodness - that was heart breaking to watch the other bees checking on her and trying to help. I can’t believe I was cheering on a bee! 🐝 I’m highly allergic. 🤯 But that was beautiful to see her survive. ♥️
Jake:**takes out queen bee** queen bee: **falls after back is dotted with marker** Jake: **awkward silence** Edit: Thanks for the likes :D Edit 2: that's a lot of likes o_O
i'm really amazed... honestly never thought bees to be intelligent at all. its super cool to see how in tune they are with their queen! when those worker bees were running around trying to get her to get up, i was reminded of a human queen's attendants fussing over her constantly lol
It must be an absolute painnn going through hundreds and maybe even thousands of bees just to find one. Glad you were able to mark her and she made it ^^
They sell a special queen holder for marking queens without this trouble. It gently presses the queen with metal net and you can paint through it without harm.
It goes to show you how Amazingly in tune Mother Nature is to her children and how life should be respected in every way! Bees play Such an Important role and are so vital to the cycle! Such a beautiful video ! Thank you 🐝💯💕💝👍🏼🌻🥰😇🌱🌎🌸🌞🥲
