Igor Levit's work on the 32 Beethoven Piano Sonatas has been the most important endeavour of the past 15 years of his life. This autumn will see his new studio recording of the complete sonata cycle released on Sony Classical on September 13 and represents the recorded testament to almost half his life spent in the study and performance of these sonatas. The release of this momentous 9-album cycle is one of the most eagerly awaited recordings for the 250-year Beethoven anniversary.
Levit is performing the complete sonata cycle over the next two seasons in Luzern's KKL (launching in August), Hamburg's Elbphilharmonie (launching in September) and Stockholm's Konserthuset (launching in February 2020). He will also present all-sonata recitals, amongst others, at New York's Carnegie Hall, Washington's Kennedy Center, Chicago Symphony Center and San Francisco Symphony's Davies Hall in May 2020 - more tour dates below.
International release date: 13th Sep 2019

This, my dear ladies and gentleman, is the result of time spent disciplining the mind and body to hunker down and perfect the art, rather than quickly rush through the repertoire and achieve quick and short-lasting fame. Kudos to the pianists and all other artists of our day who choose to reject the learning processes that have been brought about by the short-lived attention span promoted by the technology of our day. We live in a day where we applaud the results (as we see here) of the intense study and focus required to achieve greatness, and yet are not content to appreciate the process of sweat, toil, and tears that are required to achieve that greatness. The meaning of "hard work" and "intense study" have been re-defined by the mentality of instant gratification, and the arts have paid a heavy price. It is for this reason that we do not see a fruitful abundance of genius, for genius is more than innate talent. It is the result of a person who, no matter the skill level and competence, combines passion with dedication and sacrifice.

Levit has the uncanny ability to play both softly and presto as the same time. His digital fleetness always serves the music; it's not mere virtuosity. His shadings of color and volume combine in this movement with his swift tempo and sensitive touch to create what I think is a thrilling performance, perhaps one of the best I've heard in 40 years of listening to performances of this sonata. Besides all this, Levit is one courageous human.

All of the things you mention are important in this new recording. His is a completely satisfying and powerful interpretation of all of the sonatas.

Mr. Levit, the interpretation of that music so perfect and beautiful. And Beethoven says by himself very well by your hands. In adition, on the other hand, your film is attractive, sublime and well done. The montage, the edition and the elaboration of the "screenplay" are sensible, sensory and nice. Congratulation.
