Hearing this performance by Arrau, a wonderfully poetic musician with a "naturally" at ease relationships with the instrument, bump up against the Klemperer austerity is a fascinating experience. This is a far better realization than the recordings with Barenboim made about a decade later (and a lot of mm. clicks slower). The pianist whose aesthetic and approach to the music was closest to K's was Rudolf Serkin. It says a lot of (very bad) things about the "business" of music that the two never performed together.

The recording cut in 1964 by Arrau and Bernard Haitink Philips label is a pure perfect holy excellent precious pearl worth collecting... Arrau is also an expert exponent of Chopin and Liszt...His complete Chopin piano concertos with Inbal recorded in 1970 Philips label is a historical legend...

Arrau has philosophical analytical skills and knowledge knowing Debussy in say the Buddhist cultural philosophical transcendental meditation and the Catholic Orthodox or German Protestant lines or characteristics in Judeo Christian moorings or Latin theological literature...

At 34:14 the left hand goes octave lower than written? Sounds great anyway.
