If you set one up here in the Los Angeles area and Cho comes to play there, I will definitely be there. Of course, I will get a seat next to the piano. Just thinking about it makes me feel super excited. One note though, the acoustics seem to be a little dry in the Berlin lounge:D

조성진의 연주는 세상에 보기 드문 클래식함이다. 어릴 때 내가 되고싶었던 그런 진실함을 잃지 않고 어른이 되려면 스스로 타협하지 않아야 한다. 얼마나 노력을 하고 또 순수한 영혼을 가지고 있길래 저런 소리를 발견했을까. 나이는 비슷한 또래이지만 정말 영혼의 깊이가 다른 사람이다. 자유롭고 섬세하며 선을 넘을듯 넘지 않는다. 클래식이란 무엇인가 ? 고전이다. 고전의 가치는 시대를 초월함이다. 수학과 물리학 등 학문도 이와 비슷하다. 어릴 때는 클래식을 좋아하다가 나이가 들어감에 따라 팝과 가요에 물들게 되고 어느 순간 클래식은 지루한 음악으로 여겨진다. 취업 전선에 뛰어들면서 수학과 물리 따위는 현실에 쓸모없는 것처럼 느껴지기도 한다. 그러나 사실 사람들은 클래식을 영원히 동경한다. 자신이 가지 못했던 순수함에 대한 열정과 미지의 세계를 부러워한다. 조성진씨는 그 세계에서 얼마나 자유로울까. 인간이 자유로움은 돈이나 물질이 아니다. 바로 자신의 마음과 타협하지 않음이다. 그것을 재미로 즐기는 마음이다. 당신의 음악을 들으면 그래도 마음을 조금은 다잡게 될 것 같다. 고맙습니다 쇼팽, 그리고 조성진

조성진씨는 여러가지 중요한 이유들로 저에게 영감을 주는 피아니스트지만, 이 영상에 달린 댓글을 보고 하나 짚고 넘어가고 싶은 게 있네요. 조성진씨는 쇼팽 콩쿠르에서 파이널에서 연주한 콘체르토를 파이널에서 한 번, 우승자가 발표된 뒤 한 번 총 두 번을 연주했는데요. 시간은 좀 걸리시겠지만 음악을 사랑하시는 분이라면 두 영상의 연주를 파이널부터 한 번쯤 들어보시길 바랍니다. 느낌이 달라요. 완성도는 두 연주 모두 제가 어떻다 논하지 못할 정도로 높지만, 확실히 다릅니다. 저는 두 연주를 들어보고 이 조성진이라는 연주자가 정말 대단하다는 감상을 느꼈습니다. 쇼팽 콩쿠르가 필요로 하는 연주를 파악했고, 콩쿠르에서는 현명하게 쇼팽을 연주했습니다. 우승 수상 이후, 상대적으로 보편적이기보다는 누구도 가지지 못하는 한 피아니스트 조성진의 시선으로 쇼팽을 연주했습니다.(이는 저의 개인적인 감상입니다.) 이후 국내 인터뷰에서 이제는 콩쿨을 위한 연주보다는 좀 더 자유로운 연주를 하고 싶다고 하셨던 것으로 기억하고요. 로봇이라는 댓글도 웃기고, 본인이 드러나지 않는다는 댓글도 저에게는 조금 웃깁니다.

피아노 전공자인데 조성진 님이 연주한 이 음악 듣고 머리를 망치로 한 대 얻어 맞은 듯한 느낌을 받았어요. 음대생이라면 이 곡, 다 한 번씩은 연주해봤을 텐데 페달링을 이렇게 해석한 연주자는 정말 드물어요. 그런데 심지어 그 부분이 튀지 않고 곡에 잘 녹아들어가죠. 넘사벽. 그 자체. 천재는 이런 거구나,... 합니다.

@@youjinjeung6302 전공자 입장이시면 솔직히 감상보다는 현타 올 겁니다... 친구가 그러는데 전공하는 애들 중에 조성진이나 거장들 영상 잘 못 보는 애들도 꽤 된대요... 오히려 비전공자 입장이라 그냥 편하게 감상하실 수 있는 걸지도 모르죠

incredible phantastic interpretation - untill now my favorite pianist for Chopin was (and still is) Krystian Zimmerm but Seong-Jin Cho as a bright shining star att the classical sky is absolutely convincing. Superb interpretation. Thanks for posting, please more of this sympathic pianist

햐 정말 멋있다. 어렸을때 전국 콩쿨 나갔었는데 나는 그 대회에서 수상하지못했지만 조성진이 전체대상을 받았었다. 영상을 봤는데 . 초등학생들이 치는 흔한 곡이 아니라서 그런지 그당시엔 되게 신기한 곡을 친다고 생각했다. 더 신기한건 연주 도중 하늘을 올려다 보는게 너무 독특해서 영상을 몇번이고 돌려봤던 기억이있다. 어렸을때부터 감정이 풍부했던것 같다. 그 옆모습의 볼살 아직도 생생히 기억난다.

@@Stampey2 Im not sure we are thinking about the same thing. For me passion when it comes to classical music especially romanticism - CHOPIN it's not just facial expressions. Even this kind of thinking is so basic and it just shows that people without musical background don't understand it. I'm a musician, violinist. So it's weird for me. That's it.

I love his playing. He tickles you with light notes, then pours soft silky creamy serene notes, and sets you by a waterfall with stronger yet cascading notes and so on, it's beautiful ❤️

I've listened to many pianist's playing. Although the colors of Seong-Jin Cho are clear, he plays as if each original composer played it. Why? This is the result of his complete interpretation of the music. It seems that the original Chopin played it himself. But even if you listen, Seong-Jin Cho's performance is strong enough to notice. He plays a different dimension that cannot be found in other pianists. He has so much sophisticated, smart and clean soul.

My favorite thing about this piece is how different yet equally incredible a lot of interpretations are, especially during the coda. There are so many emotions coming out at once; contempt, sadness, rage, delusion, despair - that each person will experience to a different extent. This performance in particular brings out the anger and tragedy in this piece to a level that is frankly; indescribable.

Such grief and sorrow for his nation can be felt prominently when listening to his etude op 10 no 12 in C minor, which was written while he was in Paris during the November uprising - a failed retaliation against the Russian Empire. Whereas that piece convicts you with feelings of retribution and anger, the ballades emphasize the suffocating grief - and sorrowful longing for his people. Truly, the legacy of Chopin's work is that of his nation's, and to divorce the two would be unthinkable

The way he tells stories through his music is simply extraordinary. Every time I tell myself to listen for 2-3 mins of his playing, it makes me keep listening till the end. His phrasing is so uncanny that it keeps the listener wanting to keep listening without leaving. In one word - CAPTIVATING

얼마나 실수를 덜하느냐 얼마나 완벽하게 치느냐가 문제가 아니라 감상 하는 사람들이 얼마나 감정이입을 하고 몰입하느냐가 더 중요한 것 같다. 전공자들이야 " 에이~ 이부분은 실수했네 " 이럴지 모르겠지만 나 같이 어렸을적 체르니 30번만 치고 끝낸 비전공자 같은 경우는 거기서 거기 같다.

Cho seems to have his own unique interpretation, which makes his performance captivating and makes me concentrating on it. When listening to other pianists play, I can only feel someone is playing the score, but when it comes to Cho, he makes me feel what his soul feels about at this moment. This is his blessed ingenuity.
