It’s just your preference, to wich you are entitled, but only Beethoven himself could tell about REAL Beethoven. Richter was a magnificent pianist, uneven and moody sometimes though. Just like Ludwig. But many can argue : Emil Gilels was Beethoven’s best interpreter, or maybe Schnabel, Shiff. We are lucky, we can hear them all and enjoy, without putting unnecessary judgment.
OMG! This is a revelation. I thought I'd heard Richter at his best with the 32nd Sonata, so much so that I hardly wanted to listen to anything else. And Prokoviev's 9th, ditto. But this is amazing. Beethoven at his best.

Все эти высказывания выдуманы. Правда, Рихтер был один из немногих, кто старался быть верным мыслям композиторов. Но он пытался достичь невозможного. Только сам автор может читать свои мысли. Все остальные- его интерпретаторы. Представьте двух мастеров живописи, пишущих один пейзаж. Ван Гог и Ренуар произведут разные образы того-же пейзажа. Но если вам нужно точное изображение- фотография лучше всего. Гилельс был великолепным исполнителем Бетховена, лучшим, по моему мнению. Но я знаю, что найдутся многие, предпочитающие Шнабеля, Шиффа, Перайю и т.д.

Приведённый эпизод говорит лишь о том, что Рихтер был почти всегда недоволен собой и терзался именно невозможностью достичь того, чего хотел достичь он - Рихтер, а вовсе не того, о чём думал Брамс или Шуберт сочиняя разучиваемую или исполняемую вещь. Слало уже банальностью говорить о том, что многие сочинения, шедевры со временем приобретают самостоятельное значение, не зависимо от замысла или повода создания их автором, эти шедевры как-бы продиктованы композитору Богом. Например: 2-й концерт Рахманинова в исполнении Рахманинова и, он же - в абсолютно разных и гениальных, фантастических исполнениях Рихтера и Султанова. Что касается Бетховена, то он, настолько многообразен, что, на мой взгляд, трудно признать "монополию" кого-либо на ВСЕГО Бетховена. 17-я соната лично мне ближе всего в исполнении Кемпфа.

La conexión entre el genio de Bonn y Richter es tal que a uno se le va olvidando el resto de las interpretaciones y se deja llevar por esta fuerza animal, esta pasión desenfrenada, este retrato del alma, cada nota pareciera fundirse con el pensamiento, con la pasión y te deja ese honor al hombre que solamente Beethoven pudo plasmar en la partitura y Richter legar con sus grabaciones al mundo.
One of the top interpretations with Kempff and more recently Pires. It's a miracle that anyone could write this. And so it will go on with new generations playing the one and only Beethoven.
Oh MY! I have many versions of this Sonata - but as t m mentioned below, THIS IS THE REAL BEETHOVEN, beyond belief of how amazing this sonata is....I would dare say even more than the 9th symphony, Beethoven DARES to express his emotions! thank you for posting this....I will be forever grateful....
Every time I read such a comment I cringe. How would you know what the REAL Beethoven would sound like? There are no recordings of him playing, hell there are no recordings of anyone playing anything from that era. So what is "real" and what isn't is whatever you make it to be. Which is fine just don't project it on a guy dead for 170 odd years.
Mr Richter played the tempest sonata as if we were taking a pleasure cruise on a calm sea, while gazing at an ocean of twinkling stars in the sky. Wonderful.
I would like to reply to the comment of Mrs Elena Babushkina: YES, EVERY RICHTER'S PERFORMANCE OF EACH WORK IS THE BEST! Richter is the most brilliant, not only pianist, but musician!!! I adore him (unfortunately that he is no longer with us:-(
Many superlatives, but none of why he is the best ever! Because he is not. The beauty of having many extra-ordinary performers, that we can hear masterpieces played differently. Unless you heard from The composer! It’s your perception, nothing else. Two exceptions: Rachmaninov awarded Emil Gilels with a title of the best performer of his concertos. Prokofiev did the same with Richter.

Well done. I laughed out loud at Richter's opening because THAT is how I always thought Beethoven conceived the intro. I haven't heard another recording where the performer is in fact sure that's what Beethoven meant. The other measures are all likewise good.

Он ни одну свою сонату ничем и никем не называл, и даже "Гаммерклавир" вошла в историю по случайной глупости, так как все 32 написаны для этого инструмента. Возвращаясь к теме красочных названий - их давали часто романтики последующих поколений, а иногда просто издатели, для лучшей рекламы товара. Пипл всегда нуждался в живописных и сентиментальных картинках, и процесс "крещения" гениальных произведений абсолютной музыки ещё далек от завершения. Например с совершенно недавних времён стало не просто модным, а необходимым указывать в концертах 7-ю и 8- ю сонату Прокофьева как "War sonatas". Хорошо что не "Star war sonatas", наверное тут проблема товарных знаков... А вообще таким постерам как тому, кто побудил эти ответы, хочется сказать что буря - в поэтическом разумении, (а Бетховен - не просто сочинитель нот, а величайший мыслитель)- это вовсе не грохот грома и блеск молний, это метафора, внутренний конфликт и смятение, крушение надежд и ожидание спасения. Было даже такое литературное течение "Sturm und Drang", "буря и натиск" по-русски. А ещё хочу посоветовать ему (если он конечно специалист по нажатию фортепианных клавиш) исполнить "Лунную" сонату в таком стиле, как желал сам Бетховен, а именно на открытом воздухе и обязательно на фоне лунной дорожки (можно видеоряд).
Ne too and I conclude as Jacob below though I think Gould's has a special sense of being a "one off" performance white hot from the composer's head and never to be repeated. Richter's is more reflective, measured, contemplative.
Richter did not hum or conduct while playing (even though he could conduct).

@@ChernetskiyIvan they do two very different but equally impressive works. Richter sublimes Beethoven's romantic pathos and masters his rhythms, Gould prefers exposing the architecture behind the sonata.
I have always regarded Richters fine studio recording of this great sonata as a benchmark performance. Every musical detail is judged and expressed with the utmost artistry and imagination.
This is one of my favorite Beethoven Sonatas. I have heard dozens of performances and recordings of it, and this is hands down one of the very best! Others I admire are Daniel Barenboim's live performance, Wilhelm Backhaus's first studio recording (mono), and Solomon's studio recording. Most pianists completely miss the correct tempo, pedaling, and atmosphere of the gorgeous but elusive last movement, but not the ones I mentioned.

+Elena Babushkina I agree with you -this is an absolutely authoritative performance. I love how Richter doesn't over-pedal this like others (Kempff and Arrau are among the guilty parties) and plays it relatively straight without a lot of Romantic mannerisms. However there is one version of the Tempest that I believe you will like - the William Backhaus studio recording on Decca from the late 50s (in stereo). Like Richter, Backhaus plays these in a direct, uncompromising fashion, but I would argue with even greater power than Richter. Also, like Richter, Backhaus was a Bosendorfer enthusiast - an instrument with such clarity and pure tone but one that does not hide mistakes with reverberant harmonics and loudness (such as a Steinway).
Heute gilt vielfach Igor Levit als beispielhafter Interpret der Beethovensonaten. Im Unterschied zu Richter hört man seinem Spiel aber das Suchen an - der aber ist spürbar von Anfang bis zum Schluss gleichsam lebendig in(!) der Sonate.
This is fantastic! Could you identify for us what cd this recording is on? I've found it very difficult to find Richter recordings that are not marred by coughing at the live performances -- this particular studio recording is just what i'm looking for. Many thanks for posting.

The problem is not that important in that set, and it is still one of the biggest collection of Richter studio recordings. And as it is sold at a pretty cheap price... You can find other studio recordings in the Olympia series, now issued by the label alto (Schubert, Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky).
I confirm also that I share exactely the same opnion with Mr 5WiseVirgins; RICHTER - the greatest pianiste of all time!!! " There wasn't the second Richter, there is none, there NEVER will BE!" - EXACTLY!!!

Same here! I too was fourteen, and given a record that had Novaes playing this, the Moonlight, and Waldstein, absolutely in my opinion, the best Tempest ever! The mood she set was ideal.
NO ONE today plays Beethoven, nor any other piano piece of this genre, better than this man. Shame he was not permitted to come play in the West. Humble and never wealthy, he lived in a small subsidized apartment like many other Soviet citizens of the time. I want to cry every time I think of this.
Richter plays how the greatest pianists wish they could play... not necessarily how the audience wants to hear it. He's right up Beethoven's alley. 16:45 the skill is just scary and all too easy for him... but, poor Richter didn't have the sensitive soul for this.

You made an important point. Without the intention to bring this discussion to any lengths,it is percieveable that the stature of one artist can be better or even ideal for one or another author. The boundless sensitivity of Richter's, to me, gives the emphasis to 'now' i.e. here-and-now and the dramatic side is somehow 'hidden', thence I would dare say that becomes Schubert best, whose stunning renderer he proved to be. However, I cannot name any other pianist who was able present a musical work of art opening up endless depths. Even Gould's presentation (who I would say has all the vigour and dynamics of Beethoven) has 'an end to it, somewhere' - with 'Slava' you get the sense of (our) being momentary in time.
i disagree richter is fantastic pianist. but there are dozens at the top level.... ghilels horowitz backhaus arrau etc.. in any activity there is not the best best best....

Бетховен не назвал эту сонату, Антон Шиндлер услышал, как Бетховен сказал, что пианист должен читать «Шторм» Шекспира, чтобы правильно интерпретировать эту сонату. Однако комментарий Шиндлера не считается надежным.
Буря в стакане воды - ваше мнение. Рихтер относится к тем пианистам, чей авторитет неоспорим, непререкаем. И он исполнил эту вещь гениально, как и огромное количество произведений, в т.ч. Бетховенских сонат. Его исполнение считается наиболее точным, наиболее передающим содержание произведения. Такие комментарии Вы можете писать под исполнением Мацуева, если хотите... но не здесь.
