I listen to this all this time, and normally the coughing doesn't bother me. But today, for some reason, it has been frustrating to listen to. But lol. True.
What's also nice is the "hey let's open the crunchy packaging of candy and then munch it furiously with our loud dentures during a piano concert" crowd.
I have been listening to all of Valentinas performances for over 10 years now. I am a lover of all music. Rap, rock, metal, blues, and all classical. I've always loved classical pianists the most. I've tried to listen to who the critics say are the best, but nobody comes close to touching the soul like Valentina. This woman has no equal. You would have to be insane to criticize her in favor of any other pianist in the world. I've compared her to all. There is no comparison. I will continue to listen to her performances over and over forever. It will continue to get me through the tough times in life.
There was a video on the internet this morning. A lady had a piano out in the countryside, in I assume Africa. She was playing Movement two of Beethoven's Pathetique for an elephant, who stood there beside her listening and making a musical sound. It made me gloriously happy. Nothing is more beautiful than Movement two of Beethoven's Sonata No. 8.
My huge and sincere THANK YOU for that wonderfull cough. I liked how its upper tones reverbs within the halls walls filling room with passionate feeling of scratching inside ones ill throat. Blessed throat. It makes me envy.
Bravo! As for me, Beethoven's work is absolutely about "time and tempo". IMO, Valentina Lisitsa is the most accomplished pianist of any I've heard (I'm 69 years old and heard many), and whose interpretation is flawless (Beethoven and others)! Her interpretation of Sonata, OP 27, Mov 1, 2 & 3 shows this as much as any other Beethoven's work. Ms. Lisitsa proves her expertise in time and tempo with her rendition of Moonlight Sonata above ALL pianist throughout 'recording' history.
Krystian Zimmerman! This is what is said about him: Music for Krystian Zimerman is the art of organizing emotions in time. The Polish pianist's interpretations of everything from Beethoven and Chopin to Schubert and Szymanowski reveal infinite expressive subtleties and the underlying clarity of his story-telling through music. Zimerman's place among today's greatest artists remains not least on the freshness and originality of his performances, always intensely personal and prepared in meticulous detail. He may study a work for decades, exploring every facet and contemplating its meaning before introducing it to his recital repertoire or taking it into the studio. His approach belongs to a dynamic process of creative evolution, one in which self-criticism, deep reflection and intuition play significant parts. “The final thing - that which art is made of - happens in the concert hall,” he notes.
I do not believe I have ever heard this played with such a high degree of expression - throughout. Thoroughly enjoyed this performance by Ms. Lisitsa. Her dexterity was impressive, as usual. Ron
I wish I could like this a million times. Technically masterful, and with a vulnerable intimacy that makes you feel this is coming straight from the heart. Brava!!!
@@therealconniefrancis I was going to say this is unusual slower than I expected her to play it. But she picks up tempo later. I think a lot of Beethoven is played too slow in general. Remember his was a student of Mozart, and contemporary composers also wrote fast sonatas. The piece suddenly opens up and you hear some Liszt and Chopin in it! Playing Beethoven slowly bring its own set of problems, the fingering becomes a case of perfect timing and you get some strange Bossa Nova rhythms into it, to get your timing right.
I did not think it was physically humanly possible to actually play this. How brilliant Beethoven was to work out how something that complicated could be managed by two hands. And, let's not forget to say how utterly amazing Valentina is here.
I love watching her face and the sheer joy she gets from playing. La Campanella is also an incredible performance by this truly amazing pianist. Brava, Madam Lisitsa, brava!!
Fingers gotta play. Ears gotta hear. Throats gotta cough. It's nature, man, even though it's annoying. And besides, at some point in our lives we will all play the role of the cougher, to our embarrassment and discomfort. You all know it's true.
Ooohhhh!!! Ooouuuuu . . . The interpretation of the 2nd movement, oh my, the delicate parts were SWEET!!!!! The diminuendos were exqusitly melted into silence. Just like cotton candy. My goodness!!
Il watched it 1 million Times and still have chills Valentina I juste love the way you play I am fan fan fan its just perfection even silences between notes are beautiful
I played all three movements and performed them. They are very beautiful. And she plays them masterfully, not only technically but with so much Beethoven Emotion.
Valentina, You are a genius. I am a musician myself, but never have heard any perfomance like that. You give unbeleivable presence of all color feelings in your interpretation of music. Only genius performers can bring so much passion as if they live a bright and interesing life at this moment in music and each one who is listening to it lives this life too-) Браво!
Himmlische Magie! Was für eine Kraft! So viel Gefühl! Now, i try to translate in english, with my nearly inexistent command of english and with the aid of LEO (wordbook): 3 o'clock in the morning, this minutes i come back from your Concert in Munich. It was magic! Heavenly magic! What a power! So much feeling! You're sitting on the piano, playing most compliceted pieces, sometimes with a smiling mien, as if you would cycle good-humored in the summerwind throu the landscape, like, as if were nothing easier than playing piano. Your live concerts, over and over again a enjoyment for watching and listening. I can feel, you love your music and your guests. Thank you very much! Kind regards also to your husband and your son! God bless you all! kind regards Michael
Valentina, the way you smile when you play... I imagine it’s because you enjoy sharing your passion with folks who wouldn’t hear it otherwise. I love the way you play. I love even more to see your character shine through the music. It brightens my day a lot. This is how I like to play... to share the music. Thank you for sharing it with us.
I noticed that if you listen to this video more often you start thinking the coughing belongs to the music. You almost wait for it to happen...It must be difficult for artists like Valentina to concentrate with these disturbances. Usually the coughing is filtered out later on when the rocordings are planned to be sold. I would love to hear the filtered version... :-)
Manji Yes but actually when I listened to the video I only heard 1 cough because I was so concentrated on what she was playing, so, it might be the same for her ^^
I only consciously heard one cough, towards the end of the Grave introduction, and only started 'hearing' the others after reading some comments whilst I was listening!
This is incredibly beautiful...listened to it every night on WNIB Chicago...I remember Harry, art teacher/school principal and his wife Carolyn, genius piano player from Dearborn,Michigan: 1972.Sure hope Jesus Christ shows up soon! Love is forever!💝
As a pianist myself learning to play this beautiful Sonata my mind was totally focused on the pianist and her artistic interpretation. If people are coughing they need to so lets show empathy and compassion and instead express appreciation and gratitude for this beautiful performance by a gifted pianist.
Valentina lisitsa you know how the real music is composed and also how to know which music is real and which is not. I like the way you play because you play very natural I feel a person with humility.
Excellent playing of this wonderful sonata (spoilt by the coughing as people have already said but nonetheless I was able to concentrate on most of the performance).
This is superb playing and Beethoven would be most pleased. I now hope she will post the Liszt sonata in B minor which she played along with the Pathetique during her current 2014 European tour.
+ruben3k4 "Do you even grammar?" Do YOU ??? You're insulting one the best pianists in the world, a 42 year old woman who's been a US citizen for over 22 years and her grammar is better than yours ! Her grammar is only slightly off, while your reply literally makes no sense and isn't even a sentence . LOL Oh, the irony. In fact, her grammar is just as charming with her minor mistakes as her Russian accent is, from growing up in Kiev.and I for one , hope she never loses it. You really need to work on your own grammar and stop trying to be a smartass.
This is by far my favourite rendition of Pathetique. Valentina, your skills are beyond words. Your precision, your meticulous care for the notes, the emotion you put in, and with such ease as if your fingers just 'dance' on the keys. I am always speechless after watching your videos (and also starting to think you may not be from this world! haha). I have watched a lot of your videos and thoroughly enjoyed them all, any chance you're coming to Melbourne (Australia) anytime soon?
I agree. This piece is a wonderful piece to put so much emotion into especially if you put Beethovens story behind it and tell the story with your soul. It's so much fun to play, but I will truly never feel this piece as much as she does!!!
In order for anyone to be able to play magnificent classical pieces perfectly are on another level of consciousness and are automatically at the level of genius and brilliance I think 🤔!!! Thank you Valentina my friend... .. bravo!
The second movement is simply enchanting. I didn't know until recently that it was the basis for the chorus of Billy Joel's "This Night". Imagine that! Beethoven and Billy Joel collaborating from centuries apart!
