It is one of the most popular symphonies ever: Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major, Op. 55, also called Eroica. Here it is performed by the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Michael Boder at the Beethovenfest Bonn 2021 at the World Conference Center Bonn (WCCB).
(00:00) Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major, Op. 55, Eroica
(00:36) I. Allegro con brio
(17:38) II. Marcia funebre (Adagio assai)
(30:18) III. Scherzo (Allegro vivace)
(36:03) IV. Finale: Allegro molto - Poco andante - Presto
Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 - 1827) began planning his Symphony No. 3 in the fall of 1802, composing most of it in 1803, and probably not completing it until early 1804. The private premiere happened in the same year. The first public performance took place on April 7, 1805 and was conducted by Beethoven himself.
Because of the epithet ‘Eroica’ (the Heroic one), Beethoven’s third symphony is commonly linked to Napoleon. However, Beethoven’s relationship to Napoleon was rather ambivalent: on the one hand, he was fascinated by Napoleon’s ideals, but at the same time he was deeply repelled by the fact that he had proclaimed himself emperor. Later, however, Beethoven is said to have revered Napoleon. His ambivalent attitude is also evidenced by the addition of the words “written on Bonaparte” to the copy of the score, which he initially erased, but later added in again.
It is also unknown, however, who the hero could be to whom Beethoven dedicated the Eroica with the words “Sinfonia Eroica composta per celebrare la morte d’un Eroe”. Researchers doubt that he could have meant Napoleon. Whatever the case, Beethoven dedicated his third symphony to a hero whose funeral he commemorates in the second movement with a brilliant funeral march and who he resurrects triumphantly at the end of the fourth movement. Perhaps it is precisely this range of emotions, from serious, deepest mourning to joyfully enthusiastic exaltation that makes Beethoven’s Eroica so appealing.

Brilliant Beethoven, the great genius from Bonn who never disappoints. The 3rd Symphony is mind-blowing and this is a superb performance by ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra and Michael Boder. To my ears the Austrian and German orchestras often seem a cut above some of the others, I think it is the quality of the string playing perhaps. Trying to imagine how this incredible music would have seemed to the audiences when it was new. I would love to travel back in time and hear Beethoven at the piano improvising, perhaps in one of those improvising duels he would sometimes do. I play jazz piano by ear, cannot read music, and like to improvise and I love Beethoven's use of variations eg the Diabelli variations for piano. Life was not easy for Beethoven, he represents a heroic triumph over adversity.

Thank you for this nice comment. The step between Autumn Leaves in a jazz arrangement and this Beethoven is perhaps shorter than we often think. Music is music, who knows what mr B had thought about nowaday music?
@autumnleaves2766
@autumnleaves2766 7 месяцев назад
@@staffanolofsson8201 Some of the modern popular music has such banal chord sequences, but Beethoven would no doubt have come up with interesting variations and would have harmonised well. Youngsters need to listen to the final movement of the 7th Symphony, an example of a back beat in classical music which drives along with great energy. Or the final movement of the Opus 111 piano sonata no 32, that syncopated section which is like jazz a hundred years before jazz was invented. What a genius Beethoven was. My Beethoven T-shirts have arrived today too, one for me and one for a family member who also loves this German giant of classical music.

Ever heard of the Duke of Wellington ? Ever heard of Mozart and Haydn, Bach and Handel, et al ? PS: In 1813 Beethoven neatly switched sides and celebrated the Duke of Wellington in his ‘Wellington’s Victory’ Opus 91.
@roberthill799
@roberthill799 29 дней назад
@elaineblackhurst1509 He didn’t “neatly” switch sides. He was outraged, as were many, when Nappy declared himself an emperor and sold out his earlier republican ideals.
@elaineblackhurst1509
@elaineblackhurst1509 29 дней назад
@@roberthill799 Beethoven did switch sides; musically, politically, and emotionally he moved away from the ideals of French revolutionism corrupted into Napoleonism into a better appreciation of the democratic ideals of Great Britain as a better way of modernising the absolutism still found across much of Europe - the evidence can be heard in virtually every note of Opus 91.

I feel honored to be in the presence of these musicians. But the tempos are too quick. The second movement is done at such a rapid pace like everyone wants to just finish and get out of there. It should be more contemplative. I believe Carlo Maria Giulini's 1979 release is almost nine minutes longer but is spectacular. A performance for the ages. Next comes Klemperer's.

Maybe they do want to get out of there - completely understandable.

I totally agree. The opening itself in this performance is so lame. The second movement should be so elegant and majestic and not be played perfunctorily. Carlo Maria Giulini's approach in 1979 stands even today as the most outstanding reading. Eigen Jochum's version was not bad either.

Herr Haydn set the form, and Mozart wrote perfect music under this paradigm (his genius actually surpassed just FORM), then what others can do? The only answer is to 'break' it! Beethoven did it, and he did it in a way that inherit all the best, and push everything to a higher level, so high that his successors just feel impossible to surpass! What a genius!
