Harris Goldsmith (1935-2014). I first became aware of Harris Goldsmith through his writings for High Fidelity Magazine in the late 1950's. I liked his admiration of certain pianists as Harold Bauer, Ossip Gabrilowitsh, and Ignaz Friedman. I often was disturbed by some of his reviews regarding other pianists of that period. However, there was no doubt that his god was Artur Schnabel. (In later years Goldsmith admitted that certain passages of Schnabel's playing of the Beethoven Sonatas were "clotted.") I had peripheral contact with Mr. Goldsmith when I responded to his review of the complete recordings of Ignaz Friedman when they were first released on LP's. The review was published in Opus magazine. The pianist kindly answered my correspondence. Goldsmith studied piano with Robert Goldsand and Verna Brown and graduated from the Manhattan School of Music. He also worked with Claudio Arrau and Karl Ulrich Schnabel. In 2001, he gave a presentation in Berlin at the celebration of the Fiftieth Anniversary of Artur Schnabel's death. Listen and learn.

When Harris Goldsmith died, his friends gathered to honor his life. Some spoke about times and thoughts they had shared with Harris, some recalled how they reacted to him as a colleague and critic. Andras Schiff rose to speak and simply said, " I will miss him at my concerts" Harris was an exrordinary musician, one who truly understood this language, and he was also a fearless pianist. There are some recordings still extant and we would be grateful if more were shared on youtube. Thank you Beckmesser2 for this one. It shows his unremitting conception of the work and his total dedication to presenting it through the keys of the piano, come what may.
