@Jacek Marczyk I have always figured that Islam is equally as terrible as all the others at the same point in it's own history (although frankly. I have read all the major books and Islam seems more awful to women to me) but since it's the newest, it hasn't had as much time to mellow out and for it's followers to make justifications for parts they believe in and parts that are "historical and not translated corrected" and other BS like that.
@@jenbcamping I've long thought that, but I'm not sure now if it is inevitable that as religions age they mellow out, or if maybe we just got lucky that Christianity was mellowed out by secularists at the right time. Like, if things had just been slightly different (butterfly effect) maybe Christianity would still be terrible. And if we got lucky with Christianity, what if Muslims never get lucky and Islam is never mellowed out?
@@calebmauer1751 Yikes, well it BETTER chill out, or true liberals better stop clinging so hard to cultural relativism. They're already justifying so many terrible things, like slavery, random violence, and the way almost all women are treated in the Muslim world. They're really going to reach their limit if it is literally kill or be killed all the time. =P I don't think we got "lucky" with Christians though, all religions throughout history have always become less aggressive and more tolerant over time and as they spread.
@@jenbcamping I don't think most liberals justify any of that stuff but you're right, some do defend Islam too much. They are trying to do the right thing to defend people's 1st Amendment right to have their own religious beliefs, they just take it too far if they say that Islam is above criticism. We should absolutely be criticizing all the bad parts of Islam, just as we should criticize any wrong behavior from organized religion. And I think Islam is the most violent religion in the world today, but you have to attack the institution and not the individuals.
I know Salman Rushdie but just got to know about Hitchens. What an intellectual and incredible human. We need 100's of people like these in this world.

@Tiktaalik Get your facts straight buddy, he died of pneumonia he caught while being treated for cancer. Aside from that, despite his consumption of alcohol he was always sober enough to make logical points during event like these, so he retains my respect.

You don't have to if you don't want to, once I'm better informed I'll happily respond to this. And as a footnote I'd like to add that an atheist can't be a religious zealot, given he lacks religion.
His book “God is not great” is intellectually appalling, full of falsehood. Has been taken apart by Academics/Scholars. If you want to learn more about Islam, listen to Timothy Winter. Don’t just judge it how it has been weaponised by regimes, and by reducionlists who lack any nuance like the New Atheists.

Christopher Hitchens is a arrogant Jew and leading all of you sheep to the hellfire. Allah swt says QURAN 16:22-25 Your god is one God. But those who do not believe in the Hereafter - their hearts are disapproving, and they are arrogant. Assuredly, God knows what they conceal and what they declare. Indeed, He does not like the arrogant. And when it is said to them, "What has your Lord sent down?" They say, "Legends(Fiction) of the former peoples," That they may bear their own burdens in full on the Day of Resurrection and some of the burdens of those whom they misguide without knowledge. Unquestionably, evil is that which they bear.
its nice to know that a leftist can attack religions other that christianity i think that we should look into as many religions as we have time for to toss out the bad & accept the good
Life is very short, believe in GOds final messenger Muhammad(SAW) who calls you to success. Or you can follow arrogant Jews like Hitchens who call you to destruction. There is tons of evidence for the Creator.
Tiktaalik wow you came to a comment celebrating his mastery of the English language to a) make an obviously false statement (that 99% of what he had to say was about Bush and Iraq - of course it wasn’t), and b) state that because you disagree with him on an issue you are glad he is dead. Classy.
One person's rationality is NOT another person's bigotry. They are distinctly in OPPOSITION to each other. "Rationality" describes thinking based on reason and logic. Both reason and logic can be faulty but then a person is not thinking rationally. Rationality MEANS correct use of logic and reason. Bigotry is a demonstration of the OPPOSITE. Your pathetic claim would be similar to a rancid fart expelled in public, but in all caps like that, it catches the attention a bit more like an expanding brown stain on the seat of white pants.
Phil C What you call rational led to the destruction of so many innocent lives in Iraq and hell being unleashed throughout much of the ME. But it's all good since he hated Muslims. Httchens is the only person I saw that was stupid enough to never give up on the WMD fairy tale well after it was proven a hoax. He died still pushing the WMD myth. He was a fundie.
Matt G It was a fucking aggressive war. The consequences of such a war were know before the unprovoked attack, If you actually think the US Government gave a shit about the Kurds, you don't have any understanding of Washington DC. The US was the nation that assisted Saddam in acquiring and using the chemical weapons in the first place, to be used against Iran in Iraq's aggressive war against Iran. What's happening now is the US is/was helping Sunni jihadists to overthrow Syria's secular government, with tragic consequences for the Syrian people. Fortunately Russia, Iran, and Hezbollah helped save Syria from being put under the Sunni version of Islamic law and they prevented the extermination of Shiites and Christians. The US flooded Syria with weapons which were used by Al Qaeda and ISIS to cause great havoc. The US Government is the world's number one supporter of dictators, and the US supports the worst nations in the ME, including Israel and Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia is a nation that actually lives up to the negative stereotypes.

It warms my heart when I read in the comments of one-time Muslims freeing themselves from the shackles of Islam. We can be good to each other without religion, of any stripe. Islam is arguably more difficult to disassociate from, and I have enormous respect for anyone who has bravely taken that step.

It's said that a person dies twice. The first time when someone stop breathing, and the second time when their name is spoken for the last time. May Christopher Hitchens live for many decades to come.
@Kali Southpaw "generations" can mean "a long time" or "not so long". A generation is "all of the people born and living at about the same time, regarded collectively". It can also be described as, "the average period, generally considered to be about thirty years, during which children are born and grow up, become adults, and begin to have children of their own". 2 generations could still be considered "generations", and from the latter description it would be a measly 60 years.
Not a loss but a gain. Every valid point he made is still there and as valid as when it was made. Hitchens physical presence is not required to carry on his legacy. The point of a teacher isn't to do the work for you, but rather to teach you how to do the work required.

Spirituality always weakens though time. Abraham sat down with God face-to-face while later in time, Moses had to avert his gaze into the cleft of a rock when the Lord passed by. Jesus called us out to love our enemies. Now our own American Empire can make the world a wasteland. There are three stages of spirituality in ancient Sumer: 1. The gods rule 2. The gods rule through me 3. I RULE !!!
I didn't say there wasn't. Merely remarking at how profound the statement was because if we look at the history of religions, his statement becomes obviously true. Is this an indictment of the founders or teachings of the religion? No, it is an observation of how some choose to behave in the name of their particular religion.
The only peaceful aspect in Islam is when adherents choose not to follow or are ignorant of the examples of their prophet. Thankfully, billions choose this route.
Ah so its all Britain's fault, what a simplistic view you take, all Religions poison the very people they claim to nourish, Jews, Christians, lay Christians Hindu, Muslim have all fallen into this trap, all have blood on their hands, so save me the history lesson on blame. You appear an intelligent person, but do not be blinded by the atrocities of a few, and you now bestow great faith in one of the most divisive religions present today. That to me is neither progress on a humanitarian level or spiritual. A Religion hyjacked by a few does the masses a huge disservice' Learn the lessons of peace, understanding and humility.
You are dead wrong. Your knowledge of world history is minuscule. Citation from you - "From the time Prophet Mohammad was born until today all muslims put together have not committed 2% of the atrocities of the second world war forget the rest of countless other massive atrocities that has been committed by white skin westerns in the 20th & 21st centuries" It is a blatant lie. Muslim conquest killed ca 250 million all over the world, 80 million in Indian subcontinent alone. You probably do not know this, most Europeans do not know this, I do. Try some research on internet on muslim conquest of India. They did it (mass murder) by sword, not atomic bomb. Atomic bomb is faceless and do not feel the suffering of an individual. Muslims in India killing at close distance were immune to human feelings? Looking into human face and cutting throats like today's terrorists? . Enough of the historical corrections. I met Christopher Hitchens with my friend and was able to talk with him, just the three of us for about 15 minutes before a book reading he was giving in Berkeley on his book about Kissinger. We were the only three on the second floor of the bookstore at the time. I had no idea who he was when I first met him. My friend and I just happened to be upstairs looking for a certain book on spirituality and for reasons unbeknownst to us at that time, yet soon to be revealed, the whole movable bookshelves spirituality section of the bookstore had been cleared out to make way for a talk by someone who wrote a book. So we stayed around to see who this person was, who had ruined our spirituality book shopping experience, and it turned out to be Christopher Hitchens, and so we asked him what books he had written and why he was there and he was very gracious and informative and very very nice. He didn't talk down to us and was very earnest and informative and was exactly as you see him on tv. Although I don't agree with all of his positions, I agree with most, and am so glad I had the chance to meet him and wish he was still here. He was one of the rare people who is most able to suspend emotionality and look at things from a wholly logical perspective and he was also always prepared to speak his truth regardless of who disagreed. We need more people like him. RIP Christopher Hitchens.

350 years ago, there was another fellow who was just as courageous or even more so. Baruch de Spinoza, a Jew from Amsterdam. The American Constitution was mainly based on his book, TTP. Not a Brit, but a Dutchman.
Douglas Murray is doing a pretty good job at keeping the touch burning I found Hitchens many years ago when I was a teenager and hanging around with a lot of U.K. black Muslims which in that time early 90s were more based on the American Nation of Islam than the Arab version and with whole I learned a great deal about Islam all this before 9/11 and during my research I found Hitchens and made a lot of the same conclusions with which I discussed with my friends. We used to spend hours on end discussing my findings suspicions and never once did any of us fall out or even get angry even tho I was adamant in views of the Truly tyrannical nature of the book and teachings. Strangely we are all still great friends today and my views haven’t changed rather intensified and we still occasionally have long deep talks about the problems which especially now are more relevant. When people can with comfort openly discuss all aspects of a subject without the fear of offending progress can be made.
I recommend his book God is not Great. He really skewers the insanity of religion with very good arguments especially the abrahamic faith and old testament. He is very ill with esophageal cancer which eventually killed him in this video.

My opinion of his best point was when Mr. Hitchens spoke about The word "total", as in totalitarianism. This is the major objection all democracies must have with Islam.... Islam is completely incompatible with democracy.. end of story...
Which was true about Christianity, too, until Christians decided it was worth the effort to see things another way. The Kaiser and the Tsar explicitly proclaimed they were the last kings on Earth truly honoring God's will. Such claims were the norm in 1814. Less so in 1914, but it was still an honored Christian concept. Until Christians as a whole were willing to give up fighting for the inerrancy of their particular interpretation of the Bible, the politics of religious sects within Christianity incessantly intertwining themselves with the promotion of warfare was simply normal. It may be true that Islam has a specific high hurdle, insofar as the Quran implies that the civil law and religious law is connected. If Muslims are willing to give that up, reform is perfectly possible.
Edward Harley, R U aware: Christopher was at one time (as was his brother, Peter - when younger), a Trotskyite. Christopher Hitchens may not have liked the Clintons but he supported the Neo-Conservatives*** And the invasion of Iraq in 2003. *** Ironically, or maybe not, the … founders of the Neoconservative movement (Irving Kristol and his son William Kristol) were also Trotskyites. Trotsky wanted to create Marxist revolutions all over the world. He and Stalin were in opposition (Stalin wanted to concentrate on modernizing Russia/Soviet Union). Eventually, Trotsky was assassinated. The so-called "cultural Marxists" (of the New School in Frankfurt Germany) took Trotsky's ideas further, the KGB followed in its war against the West.

You know that Islam is a cult of death that represses people, especially women, stifles freedom of thought, hates this life, and hasn't contributed any new technologies to advance humanity in the last 1000 years. It was created over 2000 years ago by an ILLITERATE misogynist merchant without any knowledge of any of the sciences and who claims to have spoken to the fictional angel gabriel (who just happened to speak arabic) and was eventually flown off to paradise on a WINGED HORSE no less, and a species which archaeology has never found any proof of. Use your critical thinking skills and question the nonsense that's in the koran (which by the way was plagiarized from the torah and christian bibles) and the hadiths (of which they were originally over 5000). The fact of the matter is, if there was any scientific proof of any god(s), religions and religious people WOULDN'T NEED FAITH! If you'd like a real history of islam, read " IN THE SHADOW OF THE SWORD" by Tom Holland. Oh, I forgot, your religion won't permit you read anything that would cause you to think. So put on your burka, grab that AK47, plant your IED's, and strap on that suicide vest and prepare to meet that man-made supernatural fictional god in the sky on your winged horse no less!!!!
TK Mondavi, you want scientific proof of God? LOOOL What is your definition of Scientific evidence... do you want the evidence in the form of classical mechanic or Quantum mechanic?
Talk is cheap. So here's the proof I'll accept to prove the existence of your god or any god. Go to any Veterans Hospital in any part of the world and call forth your god and have him regrow the missing limbs on those injured religious soldiers and record it for all the world to see your all-powerful and omnipotent deity in action. If your god does that, I'll convert to Islam or any religion of your choosing. Fair enough? And don't give me a bunch of excuses like the standard cop out "god works in mysterious ways" bullshit. So let's put your faith into action, what hospital will it be? It's time to PUT UP OR SHUT UP Aisha!!!!!!!!
Yes, perhaps 'weapons of mass destruction' weren't impossible but you did demand we believed in them chris in spite of any real evidence. And didn't you then push the myth of peaceful outcomes , once we'd killed Saddam and all ? Good to see you learned something chris, albeit a bit late for all those other dead people. And not much help for those still dying. Perhaps better to define 'the impossible' ? Something like 'violently forcing your ideology on others will make the world a better place' , see Democracy, Islam, Communism etc for pertinent examples.
But atheism does not demand that you believe in the impossible... so I don't see your point. Mr Hitchens was referring to the implicit Islamic tenet that Mohammed and the Koran are PERFECT and therefore cannot be criticised, undermined or revised. He was pointing out that any objection to this is heresy and heresy would result in conflict of some description. But that comes directly from theism, whereas any unpeaceful outcome from atheism is simply a result of being in opposition to theism.
He disbelieved in the soul. Nothing for him to have peace upon. PS Do Iraqis think that Iranian or Israeli souls are as precious as theirs? I think not. Stop whining.
polemeros Not whining babe, yes I do believe that all humans lives are precious. I bet I have more Iranian and Israeli friends than you, if you even have friends.
Kardo Sevi Kardo, I do not want you to feel that way. I am from Washington DC. In the late 60s, many people from Iraq and Iran moved here and became a wonderful part of the DC area
When I was "new" to my atheism, I was constantly referring to this guy to fight off conservatives. Now I find myself referring to him to fight off liberals. What the fuck happened.
Travisaurus Rex exact same experience. I now try to do what Hitch would do: read and inquire into the topic as much possible, and make up one’s own mind
Brilliant Man, knew him back in Washington D.C in 1988, drank many cups of coffee and had many conversations with him. What an honour and privilege. I wish he was here today, thankyou Christopher 🌹🌹🌹
Since Hitchens died six years ago criticism of Islam has become all but outlawed in the West. Hitchens was an equal opportunity critic. Now the same atheists who bash Christianity give Islam a pass. And I really don't know why.
I believe it's the pressure from the left post-modern propaganda machine who're using the Islamophobia train to unite the seemingly oppressed to band together against Western civilization (patriarchy). How else do you explain the self-destructive nature of LGTB and feminist movements with Islam?
"How else do you explain the self-destructive nature of LGTB and feminist movements with Islam?" What are you talking about? How are people pushing for individual rights currently trampled on by Islam somehow self-destructive? Were the American revolutionaries self-destructive? They're much more courageous and righteous than you, spouting ignorance on RU-vid. The left has a point (although many stupid people mistake it and use it toward their own selfish ends) - the first amendment is quite explicit, and we should all take heed and avoid banning religions. We have freedom of speech and freedom of thought and it seems you didn't watch the video or you'd understand that a bit better. I don't know any atheists who give Islam a pass. They do however defend Islam against the disproportionate and fallacious attacks from Christians who wish to ban or persecute people for having a different religion than them. How sad that they don't see they're tying a noose for themselves... all it takes is for some "Christians" to start killing people and suddenly Christianity is a scourge again (it has been countless times in the past so that would be nothing new). Western civilization and patriarchy are not synonymous. I hope I've answered your questions.
INSERT HUMANITY - I think the point was referring to the pathetic double-standards that those on the progressive left have in regards to criticising Christianity but not Islam when Islam is undeniably worse for oppressing the very people they purport to defend. Many "progressive" feminists hate Christianity, but they defend Islam. The irony is fucking astounding.
Haha uhhh on that.... "I've never met such a person". Not many people dare criticise Islam because of Political Correctness bullshit but *anyone* can criticise Christianity because it's a safe target. So, I really don't know who you're referring to.
When I think I'm about to sink into despair at the human condition I listen to hitch. It gives me at least a small hope that we can produce people like him occasionally.
@@vinnothelizard but hard to understand. He uses jargons and mainly address highly educated audience, however I could manage to pick up something from his speeches. May be it is easier to read some of his books.
Matthew Cooper He meant to say that because non muslim people make mistakes, Islam is not to be criticized until we can prevent all mistakes. He also meant to say that he has perfect knowledge about the consequences of the Iraq war and that statistics have no value in the search for truth and that the Iraq war was objectively a mistake that made the world a worse place. The main problem with that should be obvious. Learning is a western value and it should be a universal one.
isn't that what you'e doing here, internalizing and regurgitating a neocon antimuslim mantra that is repeated ad nauseum in comment sections like these?
