One thing I don’t think you mentioned: the company’s response time and user involvement on their Discord server is incredible. I have never come across any other manufacturer that listens to and talks with its users like they do. Very fast response to any issues, and a lot of recent additions to the Tempera engine have emerged from user discussion. Given that it’s a two person team that’s frankly beyond incredible.

I would say Tempera is one of the most interesting implementations of granular synthesis out there. The other options mentioned at the end of the video are also very good. The iPad app, Borderlands is extraordinary. If you are looking for a keyboard focused granular engine to play traditionally with a keyboard then there are likely better choices than Tempera. Personally I like the Lemondrop very much for that kind of thing

I've had one for a couple of months now. It's so good! I considered most of the current hardware granular options like Lemondrop, GR-1, S-4, Texture Lab, and some frighteningly priced Eurorack modules, and tempera came out on top easily. It's got a unique and inspiring approach to granular synthesis that you don't find anywhere else (The Instruo Arbhar comes close, though.) I've made almost a canvas a day for the past two months! One thing Loopop DOES mention at 34:15 is that the CC implementation here is very comprehensive. You can do just about anything with them including placing and removing emitters. There's so much potential! The devs are active in the Discord as well. I've seen feature requests acknowledged and implemented in hours. Frankly, I wish them success, but I hope they don't get too popular. Haha!

Tempera is a painting technique where you mix egg white into the linseed oil paint, typically painting several layers. The egg makes it ridiculously durable and therefor also used in cement in some places, among them the famous Mostar bridge in Bosnia. Thank you for explaining this very interesting and apparently well thought out instrument.
@bilonggrisimmeri

@@bilonggrisimmeri Start with drawing. Try to draw a real tree. Some people are good at playing what other people have written. Other's are good at inventing. Same with art. Some of the best painters where making fake Picasso or Whatever, but never had an original idea. Photographers used to be either technically good or have good ideas, but seldom both. Same with making food and all other arts or creative endeavours. Everyone can not be great but everyone can learn to be happy and content in making things. You can draw, you can do music in one form or another. How hard it has to be depends on your expectations, plus if it is not a challenge, you won't get the reward. Some of the factory sounds are pretty good, WTF?! Even the rhythms... the one at 48:10 starts like, "huh?" but it's great, and where it ends up, I could play some bendy strings along with it, maybe some hit and run orientalism. And it's ready to go - the EQ one one of the other potential Dead Can Dance tracks featured a little earlier, with a subby hollywood sounding bass drum, and some tinkly stuff... It was like bizquik, already premixed. Some of the rhythmic emitters might be nice in support of an mpe synth like Vector or Continuum, or both. A different kind of groovebox. You played some pretty nice granular string pads, too. They'd make nice chord tracks. I could send a couple octaves from the digital piano, by MIDI, for that. I don't usually use the whole keyboard. It could be useful, and it makes sense. I'm laughing that so many presets are like groovebox presets, but even better quality than you have the right to expect, like, do a couple of run thrus, and you probably have a backing track... but instead of the usual cheesy techno, it's some out-there and cinematic sounds. Thanks for allotting that much time to the section at the end, where you showed the presets. I was very surprised.

There is a lot to like here and everything I hear sounds beautiful. Still I had expected a bit more. Controlling scan position per note via polyphonic aftertouch / midi expression has been on my wish list for as long as granular sampling exists but nobody seems to understand the huge potential of that feature. One day maybe.
@M_orcan
@M_orcan Месяц назад
Could you not do that in phaseplant or pigments?
@Underwaterbob
@Underwaterbob Месяц назад
The devs on the Discord have stated that poly-aftertouch is coming. As it is right now, you could partially achieve what you're asking for by assigning non-tempo-synced modulators to the scan position (relative X and relative Y in tempera-jargon). You wouldn't have the control that poly-aftertouch gives you, but you would have each individual voice changing scanning position according to your assigned modulators which are per-voice when not synced to tempo.
@marcbrasse747
@marcbrasse747 Месяц назад
@@Underwaterbob I am sure poly touch will come. That is not the problem. The exact implementation would however be very important. One would have to be able to adjust the poly touch depths influence on the play position and be able to combine that with some modulator (lfo?) control to not make the sound too static. Furthermore the system should be able to do all of this this per individual voice. Technically that is all solvable. The concept that granular can be used as a precize scalpel then can almsot be as effective as full resynthesis without the parameter hassle is however stil very far from most peoples minds, including that of most developers.
@CharlesFerraro
@CharlesFerraro Месяц назад
Are you not familiar with the Waldorf Iridium/Quantum MKII? What you’re describing is trivial on those machines. Also Padshop 2 can do that and I would be surprised if any other soft synths can’t such as Pigments/Omnisphere/Phaseplant.
@M_orcan
@M_orcan Месяц назад
Yeah you can do exactly that in pigments & it's simple to set up. Just make sure it's in mpe mode & that the lfos are set to poly kbd for their reset setting. In phase plant you could even be running those per voice LFOs at audio rate. As mentioned there are a bunch of different synths that can achieve this now so you've got a lot of options!

Any iOS dev watching this will be coding as I type , and it’ll be a damn site cheaper.

Borderlands on iOS can do a lot of what this can do, with a wildly different interface, and Emission Control 2 on desktop computers is pretty similar too. I still would like this since it's a dedicated hardware box, and I am constantly frustrated trying to get my iPad to play nice with my other gear and software.

16 bit 48 hz more toys for great ideas then the pro's can rip you off with better gear.

tell that to the Behringer crowd. but there's no conflict here. very few of even those musicians who work actively become a pro (that is, support themselves purely selling their music). but very few professionals do something really culturally important, nor free to do what they want. the underground scene, on the other hand, welcome you with your toys and there's a lot of opportunities for both fun and even career achievements!

Granular synthesis is overrated
@yurijogurtsov8710
@yurijogurtsov8710 29 дней назад
in 2024 that is. 10 years ago when Borderlands emerged, it was hot. 5 years ago everyone asked for granular h/w, and last couple of years it's been an onslaught of half-baked, samey-sounding granular devices..

I love Loopop vids but this one is the most complicated to date. He seems to think that everyone owns one of these and is already familiar with it. It sounds great, yeah, but the learing curve on this is monumental. He just passes over elements of this device like we all know what he is talking about and then moves on to even more complicated aspects of it. I wouldn`t buy this if you paid me. It`s horrible to learn, small, overpriced and does nothing new, boutique at it`s finest!

If you’re watching this, you should probably already be familiar with basic synthesis concepts, especially granular concepts.

@@captainlovett4724 yeah your probably right but the insane amount of recall to try and figure this out is taxing! Just saying.

As an owner (and deeply biased, of course) I can assure you that the UI learning curve is not that steep. However the instrument is very deep and has so many different ways of being used that you are unlikely to master them all.

I have one and it's surprisingly accessible to get started. Took about 10 mins and I was making pads out of guitars and electric toothbrushes. Simple stuff is so rich and complex you don't really need to go too deep.
