Thanks for this. Ordered one. I have been really inspired and happy with the other Moog semi-modular synths together with the Matriarch, and i am really excited to include this and the Spectravox in to that environment. I have been surprised at how inspiring and fun the Subharmonicon has been despite its limitations and... awkwardness. You have limited control, and this seems to be in a similar spirit.

Great video! It explains a few questions I had, especially the drone patch. A friend tried recreating the Labyrinth with VCV rack modules. He said it would cost quite a bit more to duplicate one in Eurorack. It would be REALLY great to have external CV control of the SEQ1 CV Range. You could then "play" the sequencer with a keyboard and have the notes stay relevant, more so than just changing the root note of the sequence.

It's certainly an interesting idea. On the fence about it just because I have quite a few modules in my Eurorack system already that could do a lot of what this does. Seems surprisingly useful for drum sounds and sequencing and sounds. I'll be interested to see how people integrate it in with the other MOOG semi-modular units as well as in larger Eurorack systems. Obviously great review as always, at this point we all know this will be the definitive review/overview though.
@christophervincent77

For me it makes more sense because I don't already have have the modules needed to replicate this functionality. This is a nice package deal that sounds good out of the box and I can continue to focus my modular dollars on utility and effects modules.

@obsidiananvil9719
@obsidiananvil9719 19 дней назад
Nicely done. Thank you. I was intrigued from the first leak, and will be getting one sooner than later, but I can't help but feel there was a "missed opportunity" that would have given it seriously expanded functionality/appeal, and Moog (in general) a PR boost, by making it uniquely 'topical' amongst the eurorack crowd. Namely, having included a 16-pin ribbon cable adapter on the back, to facilitate connecting the ubiquitous Turing Machine's Pulses, Voltages, and Volts expanders.
@joshuamorganmusic
@joshuamorganmusic 20 дней назад
For those that are confused by this… It’s got more of the ‘modular’ flavor. The sequencer is a shift register/turing machine style not the typical ‘enter a note/gate and it will playback’ type. If you don’t understand eurorack or don’t want to them this isn’t for you. It’s interesting and very usable, if you know what you’re doing with generative sequencers.

I use a Sinfonion to quantize everything in my system to a chord progression I play live. This would let me integrate the labrynth into that setup! I don’t set a “scale” as much as play a bunch of chords that sound good together so I can’t just set a root note 😅

@Underwaterbob 19 дней назад
If what you want is a generative MIDI sequencer, it would be better to go with a Torso T-1 or Oxi One. Both cost about the same as the Labyrinth and can do what Labyrinth's sequencer can and much, much more. Longer patterns that you can save, song mode, the ability to control many synths at once, etc. The Oxi One has a few different generative modes, and it lets you have four of them running simultaneously. Loopop has done videos on both of those, but they're both out of date since he had prototypes and the firmware for the T-1 and especially the One have been upgraded significantly since then.

Just received mine today. The machine is very exciting. It gives you lots possibilities to shape the sound. The one thing I canºt understand is "why they didnºt use the famous ledder filter but instead this new one" The filter in Labyrinth doesnºt have that Moog juiciness. Doesnºt have that 3d sound like in dfam. If in DFAM when i close the filter the sound gets better and better , in the new one itºs only getting worse. Itºs quite flat. Resonance is weak and doesnºt tickle ears. Other than that the box is fantastic so far.

It seems MOD VCO is normalled to VCO 1 volume, so it goes from slight LFO to crazy AM. I haven't found a way to play both VCO 1 and MOD VCO at the same time without such AM: do you confirm this or have you find a way to avoid it? Edit: OK, M VCO → VCF IN does the trick.
@loopop
@loopop 14 дней назад
I discuss this issue in the oscillator/mixer section of the video - it's not that MOD VCO is normalled to VCO 1, is that beyond 11 o clock either one and certainly both start to distort each other, making it sound like a cross mod (just like if you were to drive both through a distortion pedal). If you want to hear both cleanly, keep their levels very low

Not a bad price for the feature set, but not a great starting point into modular either IMHO. If you use a generative melody and later lose the saved patch in the lone save slot, you're up a creek getting it back into the device?

This and Mavis in an Intellijel 4U case with the 1U Multi FX and a few utilities would make a killer couch synth. Just throw on some headphones and get lost in experimentation.

Can you use this as a master sequencer for the other Moog semi-modular synths? It’s been the biggest thing I struggle with on those, and rely heavily on my Turing Machine and quantizer setup to sequence other modular gear.

I think I'd be interested in hearing a review, or at any rate a comment, about how this growing family of 60hp Moog toys play together in 2024. Because collecting these is not what I'm doing with my life, but I could imagine that it might have turned out that way.
@loopop
@loopop 13 дней назад
A review for now isn't likely but it should play nicely with the other Moogs in the family. That said, I think Labyrinth will also play very nicely with many other types of gear - modular or not, with its MIDI sync

A MUCH better generative option would be a MI Marbles copy (e.g. Behringer Chaos), a clock divider; add synth voices to taste. Instant Actual music with rhythm & melody!

except this isn't anything like a minifreak. it's two turing machines, which exist to serve a completely different purpose. watch mylar melodies' video on the turing machine and why he likes them so much, they're a great tool for live techno.
