brought to by "Beetlejuice 2" in theaters September 6th & "alien Romulus" in theaters this weekend now that's settle let's get to the kills! Featuring the ghost with the most hold on to your butts!
I always found it extremely touching that Maitlands who were clearly wanting a child ended up getting a surrogate daughter in Lydia in the end helping her with her school work and being the loving parents she really needed.
@@AlexHarrison-zv4jjit really is a shame they aren’t coming back Is Winona returning? If so then yeah wtf how ya gonna give the girl with ghost parents abandonment issues???
Fun fact the “nice f*cking model* line was completely improvised but was not supposed to be filmed. as the tree was not supposed to fall down, so Michael Keaton was talking to the set designer, but Tim Burton thought it was hilarious
I love that in the show Community, they pulled off a multiple season long joke with their Halloween episodes. For the first three seasons, the Halloween episodes each had Beetlejuice said once at some point, with the third episode have some random extra walk right behind the cast in a terrible beetle juice costume.
The Beetlejuice name drops weren't all in the Halloween episodes, only the last one so that his appearance would make sense in-universe. (First two mentions were in "Communication Studies" and "Cooperative Calligraphy".)
@@hughmorris7557 He yeeted because he didn't want to dance the Tequila like Pee Wee on a bar wearing stilettos, which Pee Wee can do it without falling. The Herman has more gay code than Otho.
this is why i love dead meat. they play by their own rules, each kill count having different jokes and 'to the numbers' bits, the occasional half-horror movies like beetlejuice, and the references? gravity falls AND hazbin hotel? fuckin awesome. love you guys
Fun fact: In the scene in which the Maitlands come back as ghosts, Barbara utters, "My hand is cold," that's a reference to a really messed up part from the original script (when it was darker and very fucked up). In the script, the death of the Maitlands was a lot more dark, like Barbara's hand getting crushed by the door during the ordeal, hence the line from that scene.
@@Jerome889 I'm not sure it's out there, but I read some of those details way back on the Wiki, and I warn you.... it's pretty dark. And Beetlejuice was way more of a degenerate than his toned down version that we got.
"It's showtime!" I'm always surprised how little screen time Beetlejuice actually had. Keaton didn't waste a second on this iconic, hilarious performance. Also, Chelsea did a fantastic job with the makeup.
17 mins, but i'd say that was probably the perfect amount. it gave him time to be teased and built up, then upon meeting him at last, he gives a very strong impression. anymore than that and the character may have become an annoyance, here's hoping the sequel keeps that in mind.
@@jimmy_the_squid9456Beat me to it. They were both so memorable and owned every scene they appeared people think they had much more screen time than they actually did.
Fun fact: At one point during the waiting room scenes, you can hear an announcement that Flight 409 is arriving. Flight 409 was an actual plane that mysteriously crashed into a Wyoming mountain in 1955 and killed everyone aboard. Nobody has ever figured out why it crashed. "Shpookeh!"
I rented this movie constantly as a kid. It was genuinely one of my absolute favorite movies. It was this, Tremors, Ghostbusters, Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, and Who Framed Roger Rabbit. I rented this movie so often, my parents could’ve bought several copies instead. I don’t know why they didn’t just buy it for me. I had no idea Michael Keaton was Beetlejuice until I was in high school and read an article mentioning it. I had even seen Batman and Batman Returns several times and owned a ton of the Batman toys and knew that Michael Keaton played Batman and just never realized he was also Beetlejuice because I never read movie credits as a kid. Actually, now that I think about it, I had a lot of Beetlejuice toys, too, so I had several toys based on Michael Keaton. Probably more than any other actor. And now I realize I had Alec Baldwin’s toy from Beetlejuice and The Shadow. It’s so weird to think that toys based on actors from movies used to be so common and now it’s just comic book superheroes and Star Wars.
What I love about Beetlejuice the musical is that it strikes a perfect balance in Beetlejuice's character. He's not a total chaotic menace like he is here, but he's also not a harmless goof like in the animated series. Instead, he's just a somewhat-well-meaning menace. A true chaotic neutral.
17:42 it’s funny you mention that because Alex Brightman, who voiced Adam and Fizzarolli in both Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss respectively, voiced and played Beetlejuice in Teen Titans Go and the broadway show in which he just does the Fizzarolli voice.
Michael Keaton's range is something else. He can play superheroes, he can play supervillains, he can play Shakespeare characters, he can play thinly veiled versions of himself, he can play fatherly types both dumb and smart, he can play demons or ghosts or whatever the hell Beetlejuice is. I think he's one of the most dependable and formidable screen actors out there, and this is maybe his best performance. It's so unhinged yet weirdly well-controlled and consistent; there's no way to do it justice without watching the whole movie.
"...He then turns his attention to Otho whom he leaves looking like Lil' Gideon." I love the Gravity Falls mention reference, especially with all the crazy things happening since the release of the Book of Bill.
Gravity Falls, Hazbin Hotel, I love when he references other media because it's either funny or you know what he's talking about even if you're not too familiar with it. That's good writing, plain and simple! :)
At least once a week I repeat the "AND IVE SEEN THE EXORCIST 167 TIMES" monolog to myself. It really is one of the most satisfying little monologs I've heard from a voice active perspective. I just love how Keton goes from his regular voice and it just gets faster and more Beetlejuice as he goes on until that final line where he just goes all out. Its just really nice to listen to and mimic.
Fun Fact: Test Audiences loved Beetlejuice so much that Tim Burton went into reshoots and added a prologue for Beetlejuice in the waiting room. Hoping that the opening of the second film ends with Beetlejuices number being called
Though it wasn't covered in the count: The musical version of Beetlejuice had the Maitlands die in a slightly different way, in the musical, their death comes at the end of Adam & Barbara's duet when they jump into some rotting wood under a carpet and fall through to their death.
And the actor who played Beetleguise in that musical would go on and voice multiple characters in the shows Hazbin Hotel (as Adam and Sir Pentious) and Helluva Boss (as Fizzarolli)
@@bernebelmont1857 Agreed. It practically doubled down on the book's biggest flaw... Charlie himself. Book Charlie is... there. The 70s film actually vastly improved Charlie's character by adding in the slugworth subplot, the fizzy lifting drinks, and the emphasis on how close Charlie is to being broken by life. Thus emphasizing the idea that Charlie is just a kid, a good kid though prone to selfishness, but still a kid and that the first step to being a decent person is owning your flaws, which is a great lesson for kids. The Tim Burton version of Charlie... has all the answers and is basically an adult mentally.
I always love a Depp Burton collaboration but I don't get Depp idea for Wonka I think he could've played it like Wilder. Need to see that collaboration again
As someone who's name is Lydia, this movie has always been my comfort movie. When the movie first came out, I would always get teased because of my name. As a kid, I would just threaten the other kids by summoning Beetlejuice. Now, I wear my name like a badge of honor because Lydia Deetz is one of my all time favorite characters.
I’ve always thought Lydia was a spectacular name. “You look like a regular girl to me.” Also don’t mind that other guy, I’m reporting them as spam. (Not snuggiemaple, the other one-)
@@SnuggieMaple It wasn't that common of a name back then. I didn't know many Lydias growing up (besides my mom who I was named after) so I thought I was the only one. Which is why I was excited to have someone like Lydia in this movie
Rewatched this movie for the first time in forever for this Kill Count and that was definitely the hardest I laughed during this movie just because of how random it is haha. Keaton's delivery is so perfect
I appreciate the fact that you cover movies that have low counts regardless of the fact that their kills are low, just to show us a great movie. Also, I was literally hoping the other day that you would cover VHS, I’m so excited!
BRO the way I laughed out loud!!! 😂😂I'm surprised there weren't more HH/HB-related jokes and references, given that Alex Brightman (the musical version of Beetlejuice) performed in both those shows
I googled this: and youtube would never allow anyone to explain just how bad that actually was. I sincerely hope he no longer gets money from any of his movies.
That reference to “The Beach that makes you Old” absolutely floored me! I already found the initial joke from that Kill Count hilarious, but hearing it carry on here is just insane and so good.
17:40. A club filled with demon chicks! Gonna tell my kids this was HAZBIN HOTEL! I’m going to be as honest as possible, that line is LEGENDARY… I have no words for that!
I love this movie so much and am very hyped for its squeal! Edit: The scene when Barba and Adam come back to their house and it's been three months. This is why when someone passes away especially in the home even though that wasn't the case for them, Clocks were stopped at the time of death. This was to let the deceased's spirit know that time has officially stopped for them since time is not linear on the other side. Sadly this practice along with others such as covering all reflective surfaces, hanging a black wreath on the front door, and opening the windows when someone passes away. are no longer used. Edit 2: If you look up wedding tradition, the colors of the dress have a meaning. Marring in red means you wish yourself dead.
The clock stopping thing is real. One day my grandma's watch suddenly stopped, dead battery she assumed. She later found out that it had stopped around the time my uncle, her son, passed away.
@jeffersonsam5316 Please don't reply to the bots. The engagement just makes them worse. Also, I think you should be less concerned that their comment posted multiple times and more about the comment _literally advertising Daisy's Destruction._
Beetlejuice: "I'm the ghost with the most babe." 17:54 my favorite part of this film where the dead football players keep calling her coach even though that he survived as she explains to them 😂🤣
Like how he makes a Hazbin Hotel reference, fun fact the voice actor for Sir Pentious and Adam (Alex Brightman) played as Beetlejuice in Beetlejuice the Musical (he also voices Fizzaroli in Helluva Boss)
Y’all need to do Sleepy Hollow, it really is a horror masterpiece. I’m actually hopeful for the sequel, if only because Burton’s been trying to make it for a quarter of a century.
13:22 I always loved that shot, with only Davis freaking out and Baldwin just taking a gasp while CLEARLY not watching in the same direction, only years later I realized it was most likely a composite shot, and they were reacting to a cue backstage and did not see whatever FX fuckery was going around in front of Keaton's face
Never would've expected you to cover this, but I'm happy to see it! I would love to see you cover Sleepy Hollow sometime. Personally, I think it's underrated.
My head cannon for the (film) Maitlands is they actually tried to have a baby and either couldn't conceive or lost the pregnancy. It's all in the subtext on Geena Davis' face in that ONE moment when Barbara's cousin (Jane the Realitor?) is telling them they shouldn't live there because the house was "too big for them." While Baldwin really disliked the role (can't blame him because people mix him up with barry bostwick from RHPS to this day), Davis is acting with her whole freaking face in every frame she's in.
@@thebeebz9511 That was my thought too when I rewatched this. I thought maybe it was more evident that it was a miscarriage in an earlier draft or something.
Omg, he really does look like Barry Bostwick in this movie! No wonder it was a small shock every time I was reminded that Alec Baldwin was even in this movie.
That's not head cannon, that was certainly all intentional. There was a time when movies didn't need to explicitly explain everything and they could show information with out telling you.
17:40 I was surprised that he knows what Hazbin Hotel is. Could this mean that he should in the future do the kill count of the first season of Hazbin Hotel? Maybe he should do the same for Helluva Boss.
The shrimpy hand scare definitely got me as a kid. But I still love this sequence. RIP Mr bellafonte. At least he got one last viewing at the beetlejuice musical.
I'm so use to listening to the musical I sometimes forget that in the film you have to say his name 3 times even if there are breaks or words in between to summon him. In the musical they make it so you have to say his name 3 times in a row unbroken so they can do bits with Lydia teasing BJ by pretending to summon him then backing out after 2 only to do it when she promised she was for real this time
The Maitland's deaths were subtly foreshadowed if you looked carefully at the rear bumper on their car. They have a bumper sticker that says, "I brake for animals". Braking for the dog was what ultimately got them killed.
A lot of the behind-the-scenes info about this movie is really interesting - some of the original Michael McDowell scripts were a lot darker and straight-up horror instead of a horror-comedy (and Beetlejuice was originally written to be a demon instead of a super powerful ghost - something cool they brought back for the musical version)! ^^
I’ve watched this movie like. At least a dozen times and I never realized the real estate agent was Barbra’s cousin?! This is just one of the myriad reasons why I love Kill Counts
You guys don’t even know how excited i was when I got this notification. Beetlejuice is literally my favorite movie, show and musical (I’ve seen the musical on broadway and am seeing it on tour next year!) It’s definitely become my comfort media
This movie has a special spot in my heart mostly because of the musical. Not only did I see it live last year but I also got a picture autographed by Alex Brightman from my theater teacher as a graduation gift. I can even do a decent impression of Alex Brightman's Beetlejuice.
Fun Fact: Alex Brightman who plays Beetlejuice in the Broadway shows plays Sir Pentious and Adam in Hazbin Hotel as well as Fizzaroli in Hazbin's sister series Helluva Boss with Adam's maskless design being based on him.
