Otho wasn't horrified just by the change of clothes or the fact that the new clothes were bright blue; I think he was horrified by the fact that it was cheap polyester. Otho was clearly obsessed over high fashion and his idea of "good taste" and those kinds of people used to absolutely hate polyester clothing because they were considered cheap, tacky, and tasteless. I knew of girls in high school who would laugh, make fun of and bully anyone they saw wearing polyester. So Otho finding himself in a polyester suit was his worst nightmare.
@@OfficialDNJmoviehouse By the time the 1980s rolled around, the leisure suit (specifically the men's powder blue version, above all others) had become an icon of tacky clothing. By the late 80s, they were beyond out of style (though some version of them is apparently still available). The stereotype of a sleazy, leisure suited, male, complete with a gold chain peeking out from his wide open, chest-hair-baring, shirt, who was constantly on the prowl for women with whom he could never score, was so strong, that it became part of the title of a series of PC games: Leisure Suit Larry. His suit was usually white, but he was a hapless loser who had zero class and struck out almost constantly in his never-ending pursuit of the opposite sex. If you were good enough at the game, though, he might get lucky, once in a blue moon. Being seen in a blue leisure suit would, indeed, be a social as well as sartorial nightmare, for a guy like Otho.
The PG-13 rating didn't exist until I think 1986. Back then, PG films could do a lot and push their limits, so long as they didn't go too far. I suggest you eventually watch "Airplane!", "Gremlins", and "Poltergeist". Those are hard PG films. "Gremlins" is a Christmas movie, but the other two can be seen anytime of the year.
The movie felt like an early 90s movie to us, but that could be because we were '90s' kids. The practical effects still hold up, and we're glad to hear that they kept the practical effects in the upcoming sequel. Thanks for commenting!
1:45 - I've seen many RU-vidrs react the same way when Alec tosses the spider out the window - gasping and thinking it was a cruel thing to do. The truth is, though, that a spider's mass is low enough that many if not most of them will ride the air currents to the ground and won't be hurt at all. They may even use a thread of their web "silk" as a sort of parachute.
Nice f’n model was a shot at the props dept. the tree was not supposed to fall and was improvised by Keaton. Burton liked it so much he kept it in the movie
Michael Keaton is way more versatile as an actor than most people give him credit for honestly. Yes, he can be stoic and serious like many remember him from the Batman movies he's done, but he can also do comedy like you saw in this film. He can do drama as well. If you both ever get a chance, you both should check out some of his other classics like "Gung Ho", "The Founder", and "Birdman or (the Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance." Those three films really show off his acting chops in dramas imo, especially, "Birdman or (The Unexpected Virture of Ignorance)." Not sure if you two saw those films or not, but if you both haven't, then they're worth checking out. Fun fact though. When MIchael Keaton was initially cast to be Batman, there was such backlash over it by fans that they literally wrote thousands upon thousands of threatening letters to boycott the film because fans claimed they just couldn't see Michael Keaton as Batman, and they demanded a recast. Thankfully, he proved all of them wrong, and fans ended up loving the guy as Batman, after they saw his portrayal.
We are definitely interested in seeing more films with Michael Keaton after his Beetlejuice performance. He was so good! We love actors who can play different roles. He was also great in Spotlight. Thanks for the fun fact as well; it shows how talented of an actor Michael Keaton is.
10:00 Back then the movie ratings were a little bit more relaxed. A PG13 could have 1 F-bomb in it and still be considered a PG-13. Now days 1 F-bomb equals a RATED R.
Interesting, I thought PG-13 still allowed 1 f-bomb these days. Another commenter noted back in the day this movie was made PG-13 didn't exist, hence why we have 1 f-bomb here and some dark scenes but it's still rated PG. Thanks for commenting!
With only one flaw, this is a perfect film. That one flaw is the actor Jeffery Jones (as Charles Deetz) included in the cast. Since he is currently a registered sex offender. And having the experience of growing up in a small town in WA state (in the 70's & 80's) I can tell you how much it sucks.
Disagree, Charles is a great character perfectly cast and just adds to the greatness of Beetlejuice. Indiscretions off camera are a whole different issue separate to the movie imo.
Loved the reaction! Michael Keaton best performance is in clean and sober, you gotta see him in that he is absolutely fantastic! His first big roles were Mr mom and night shift which are good movies too.
@@OfficialDNJmoviehouse forsure! night shift is a really fun comedy, and clean & sober is a fantastic character drama. keaton is like a modern day james cagney with how much energy he brings to the screen
also this is the only time i can watch alec baldwin and really like his performance i feel he wasn't terrible in 30 rock but i like this character better
