** TIMING INDEX BELOW ** Here we have the STMIX from Befaco which is a 6HP stereo mixer in Eurorack. STMIX can mixing both audio or CV and I think CV mixing to get more interesting, varied and unique modulations is something we should all explore more of. So despite the simplicity of STMIX I wanted to make a video to show stand alone audio mixing, CV modulation mixing and also how the STMIX expands the Befaco Hexmix (which I use ALL the time).

4:14 A particularly good explanation of CV mixing to create subtle modulation of a dual audio source resulting in a nice stereo image. Thanks for breaking down each component of that mix for us. Well done Ben!

can confirm good quality, good sound, good ergonomics. easy to DIY. a very simple but brilliant module. I know no other that packs so much stereo channels in a small package.

One thing I learned from your videos so far is that DATA is probably the most useful module of all.

Lovely little mix at the end, the ST MIX was on my shopping list anyway, looks like I'll get more use out of that than my Intellijel Mixup.

Great demo. I have one of these on the way. Perfect to mix stereo Acid Rain Chainsaw with various other VCOs into QPAS. That's some fine Jan Jelinek/Farben action at the end!

great compliment thank you. I just had dub techno and the early stages of dubstep that was all blissed out and half time rhythms in my mind for some reason.

haha! You don't need a huge set up to do good things all the new samplers and granular devices are bringing big tonal palettes into the format without the need for large systems.

I have 3 stmixes. I really wanted to hear other people's opinion on this module. I like it I don't think there is module that could replace it (intelijel mixup is close but not quite there). My only problem is (but don't blame module yet I don't have other mixer to compare) some sounds get too loud quickly. I will definitely investigate more but I probably just need to get used to it.
@DivKid
@DivKid 4 года назад
gain staging is always important in or outside of modular. I find it can be easy to stack a lot of loud sounds easily with most mixers and often things don't have level controls so you can't back them off on the way.

Hey Ben. You are such an amazing resource within the community!! Thank you so much!! One question. I don’t suppose the stmix into the hex mix direct has any access to the fx sends right?
@DivKid
@DivKid 4 года назад
no it just sums the stereo mix of ST mix to the output stage. I sometimes use it into channels 5 and 6 hard panned then I get stereo EQ and access to the sends. Loose two mono channels but I can sum 4 stereos in. So it works well for me.

Hiya, great vid (and sounds!), thx for that. Noob here: can you run external audio signals straight into this mixer? From CD, MD, tapedeck (HAINBACK looping) and Laptop? Thanks in advance!

One of many hundreds of great videos. Do you mind if I ask if in this, or in general, are you hi-passing the bassline in the rack or outside in the mix?
@DivKid
@DivKid 3 года назад
Hi Dave, you're welcome to ask anywhere. The answer is both. If I multitrack I can treat any part of a mix like I would a studio production for a band or DAW production (EQ, comp, FX, etc). In the rack I'll use high pass filters if I need to or the EQ on the Hexmix to help shape the bottom end.
@dpotta
@dpotta 3 года назад
@@DivKid thanks - that's helpful. i'm trying a few HPFs out. usually, i'm a bit of a control freak on the eq - so like to able to tweak - but i'm going to stick a couple of those Shakmat Hi-Pass in some chains and see how that looks after the low end.
@DivKid
@DivKid 3 года назад
Yeah I saw those, looks handy as a set and forget way to manage some low end. Definitely easy to get into mad tweaking and endless nudging things around in the DAW. Nice to let go of that a little in the modular. If that level of tweaking is really needed I'd suggest finding a solution to multitrack record your system then you can tweak recordings later on. Best of both worlds then, enjoying the hardware, creativity and patching in the moment but having options for later.
@dpotta
@dpotta 3 года назад
@@DivKid indeed. it does look handy - i'm enjoying being able to make some music outside the computer at the moment. i've got an 8 in audio interface and have mixed in the box for a long while. but recently, I've set up a small modular rig - finally scratched the eurorack itch - and, i am really enjoying being away from a qwerty keyboard and a mouse. i'm still using an external mixer for eq though and ideally i'd like to ditch the mixer and have a standalone eurorack instrument. i'll keep the computer side of things going - but just looking to keep something separate from that in the form of the rig. it's a good scene, eurorack and all it's assorted characters - like a 21C version of the 12" vinyl scene of the late 80s/90s. indie manufacturers, imports, opinions and at the same time pretty sound, enthusiastic and like minded people.

As an end-of-chain mixer, which one is better, ST Mix or Mixup?
@DivKid
@DivKid 4 года назад
Not tried the Mixup, but going on specs you've 5 stereo channels on this and Mixup has two mono and two stereo.
@sh4tzy
@sh4tzy 4 года назад
It depends on if you want to perform with the mixer and the amount of stereo sources in your patch. Mix up for performance as it has mute switches on 3 channels. But it only has volume control on 1 stereo channel. If you have a lot of stereo and want to use it just to set levels, then the ST Mix is a better choice as you have volume control over 1 additional channel and all channels are stereo.
@strangerting7818
@strangerting7818 4 года назад
T Mr Myc C Thanks! Aside from those considerations, what about the sound quality? I have a Hot Glue for my drums and looking to get a Soundstage for the rest of my sounds. I also have a MSCL Compressor for parallel compression. So the mixer will need to handle a lot of overdriven and distorted sounds at the end of the signal chain.
@sh4tzy
@sh4tzy 4 года назад
@@strangerting7818 This is were gain staging comes into play really. Ideally you'd want your signals to sit at an appropriate level prior to hitting the end of chain mixer. Since the hot glue and soundstage both have a final level control (and hot glue has individual levels) I would play with levels at that stage (or your mixer before the soundstage) to get a comfortable level before the final mixer. You don't want to put the burden on it when you can do something about it prior to hitting the final mixer. In terms of sound quality, I don't think you can go wrong with either of them. I've never had an issue with Befaco or Intellijel modules. So as long as you don't overload the inputs (unless that's what you want) you'll be fine. Both mixers have LED's to indicate clipping, but the ST Mix has those in stereo, which I'd prefer for a final out.

Hmm, complicated choices. Do we go for the new Befaco/DivKid module Output Bus, with 6 stereo ins, and one overall level control, or do we go for this, which for the price looks as though it can solve just as many problems, and with individual channel control (4 stereo or 8 mono). Difficult decisions. 🤯
@DivKid
@DivKid 5 месяцев назад
"just as many problems" ... if the problems are simply mixing some stereo source then you gain level controls with this. But it's missing lots of the Output Bus. Line level in, headphone out, balanced line out, the soft clip limiting on the output, LED meter ... so it depends on what you're looking for. If it's just some stereo mixing I'd go for this with the level control.
@cardboardmusic
@cardboardmusic 5 месяцев назад
@@DivKidYes, they both look great. I have the Befaco Out module (with the headphones etc. So, as you can imagine the Output Bus is tempting, and almost a straight swap I'd say. But at the same time, I love the possibility of the combinations. In the Output Bus video, I loved the use of Ceres from Vostok. The combination of the two modules is very powerful. In this case, I like the fact that there's individual channel controls. Still difficult decisions - but all great modules, for sure.
@DivKid
@DivKid 5 месяцев назад
Thanks and yeah with lots of options comes harder decisions. On Ceres you have VCAs, so while I do sometimes just use it for manually mixing a few things as a bank of VCAs to modulate that's the core function and where it shines. Well worth having plenty of VCAs around.
