The documentary about this band is heartbreaking. Nobody was watching out and protecting them. They had a lot of talent and each had epic careers. Yet they were totally exploited. Oh and let's address that they were all just children.... not 1 member was 18 in this video.

The Runaways came out when I was 16. The two guitar players Joan Jett and Lita Ford were 17, but the rest of the band was my age 16. As a kid I thought it was awesome that a bunch of cute girls my age was in a rock band. When Cherie Currie left the band, Joan Jett took up the lead vocals, you should check out them singing "School Days", Jett is singing lead.

Sometimes the song isn't about the vocals so much as the message, or the lyrics or the style. They had a few predecessors like The Luv'd Ones, Fanny, and The Pleasure Seekers. The latter in particular as they were also 15-16 years old and were presented as teenage jailbait, but all were female rock bands formed in the late 1960s. Many consider Fanny the first all-female hard rock band but personally, I think calling Fanny "hard rock" is a bit of a stretch. That title probably belongs to The Runaways, but as far as all-female proto-punk/garage rock bands there were a handful but only Fanny and The Runaways would have any real success, as fleeting as it was.

I never understood how she always seemed to get the cred over Lita. I bought _Bad Reputation_ on vinyl in the late 1990s and was shocked that 7 of the 12 songs were covers. Even worse, half of them were just throwaways. "Shout"? "Wooly Bully"? wtf Joan?

That is Jackie Fox on bass. Runaways had 4 bassists over the years. Joan is playing rhythm guitar and back up vocals, which was her primary role until Currie left the band. I did want to make sure they knew that Lita Ford was their lead guitarist, since I knew they liked her too and is possibly the best female hard rock guitarist to ever live. Cherie Currie is the lead and the drummer is the late Sandy West. While a formative band in female driven rock, they were super exploited and abused by their manager while most of the band was underage. It’s important to make sure these incredible musicians get their due here and recognize that they went onto the things they did despite what they had to deal with starting out.

The record company wanted the Runaways portrayed this way, but the girls hated it. All these girls had crazy talent, and some of them like Joan and Lita went on to have great musical careers. Too bad the record company couldn't let the Runaways be themselves who knows what great music got buried because of it. On the other hand, Close My Eyes Forever may have never been recorded. Ozzie and Lita. It's a must listen.
@Databyter
@Databyter 2 года назад
I don't know about "crazy talent" But it is true that they resented the sort of sex bomb portrayal and just wanted to rock. It really did get them billed tho at first. As far as talent, they were young and just starting out. Some had great aptitude and others not so much. But as a commercial creation they did have all the ingredients to sell tickets, and whether they resented it or not, their sexploitation was a big part of getting the ball rolling for them. The lead singer could barely sing at first but they all got pretty good and were fun to watch. The energy was good. . The others were not great, just adequate. Like most rock bands starting out, they got better with work and practice, and a few with real talent had the capacity to go further. Databyter

I've been a Runaways fAn since 1976. Met them all in Dallas at a record called Peaches for a record signing. Met Joan MANY years later in Tyler Texas. For some reason she remembered meeting my friends and I. She called off the security guards to take the time to thank me for the suppe and said she remembered me.and my friends from back then. Maybe she remembered, maybe she didn't but she took the time to thank me for supporting her.. What a wonderful LADY

For another LA-based all-female seventies rock band, but one that relied more on musicianship and less on in-your-face image, try Fanny, a critical favorite in the early seventies who regularly toured with major rock groups of the time and became very popular in the UK but had only a few minor hits in the US with songs like a 1970 cover of Cream's "Badge," "Charity Ball" (1971), and a 1972 cover of Marvin Gaye's "Ain't That Peculiar." You'll be impressed by their musicianship.

@@skinnybuddha74 It's great. It's a biopic, like the one about Motley Crue. We get to see em thinking about starting a band, starting the band, and then having issues. The blonde chick wasn't a dedicated musician, she was just a singer, so she just hung it up.

I too made the same suggestion. Fanny were the Real Deal. I listed their version of "Hey Bulldog". Another great song by them is Stephen Stills S"pecial Care". And they definitely were not just a cover band. Their original compositions where great. Each member of the band were world class musicians IMHO.

Lita Ford was in the band as well. This song was # 52 on the VH1 top 100 and Lita was #76 with Kiss me deadly. Lita was the only female to be in there 2x. Also the runaways were as popular in Japan as the Beatles were in the USA.

Lira Ford was the lead guitarist in the Runaways as well. They were all quite young while they were the Runaways Cheri Curri is the lead singer. I believe their manager wrote or co-wrote this song to give them a signature catchy hit, while playing off the all girl line-up.

The Runaways were roughly 16 when they made this album. They were most definitely out of control wild, there were reports of drug use, tons of sex (with men, with women, with each other), and lots of alcohol. This lead singer was recruited by Joan Jett and record producer/manager Kim Fowley (a man) because she had "the look". Cherie was with the Runaways for two albums before leaving because she was burning herself out with all of the drugs and drinking. On their third and final album Joan Jett and Lita Ford split vocals. If you're interested in a good Joan Jett vocals song i would recommend I Love Playing with Fire from their second album.

I feel the same as Amber. I never got into the runaways and never found their music all that special. They seemed to have made it strictly on their bad girl vibe and the uniqueness as all girls. Joan by herself wrote much better music. Just my opinion though. I know many wouldn’t agree.

I totally agree. I discovered the Runaways after already being a fan of Joan Jett's solo career and... meh. While a lot of people will talk about how strong and awesome a person Cherie Currie is and how much she's been through, it doesn't change the fact that I think they would've sounded a LOT better with someone else on vocals. But, then, my understanding is that they originally approached Cherie at a nightclub because they liked her look, not because anyone had heard her sing. And, to be fair, the Runaways themselves didn't like the "sexy, bad girl" image they were saddled with. When asked why The Runaways were having a hard time being taken seriously, Joan Jett said, "It was that whole 'Cherry Bomb With The Corset' thing with Cherie." Reading their history, you see that they were being marketed as "jailbait rock" and their manager treated them the way a pimp treats his prostitutes. He kept them drugged up, without money, and constantly abused them (insulted them, threw things at them while they rehearsed, had sex with a woman in front of them (while they were minors) so they could learn how to be "sexy" onstage, allegedly drugged and raped the drummer, etc). While a lot of people (even here in these comments) glorify the Runaways as liberated girls giving a big, strong FU to society, the truth is that they were minors who were abused by the adults around them, pushed into playing "jailbait" to titillate pervs, and pretty much abandoned by their parents. So, yeah, their history is interesting and sad and frustrating but their music? Meh.

LITA FORD was the lead guitar player for "The Runaways", just so you know...couldn't tell from your review of "Cherry Bomb"...And SANDY WEST, may she RIP, was in my opinion the absolute best female rock drummer ever...in history...and in the top 10 ever, men or women...I've seen Joan and the Blackhearts 23 times total, once where Cherie Currie sang 3 songs, and it's just so sad what happened to them..But still pay respect to the band and their talent/influence, which was massive... BTW..they have 3 albums, try another one to be impressed, like "Black Leather", "Wasted", ""You Drive Me Wild ", "American Nights", etc...Thanks for doing this one!

They were totally directed to titillate and weren’t taken very seriously by music snobs at that time, although most members would have long and fulfilling careers, but this lineup shouldn’t be confused with a GOGO’s or BANGLES as those groups wrote music and were way better musically when they emerged. But Jett and Ford would definitely become accomplished performers later on.
