New France only ever functioned because of the Native population. France designed New France to accommodate the Natives in order to obtain furs and keep out other colonial powers. In this episode we learn about the natives of the Saint Lawrence as they can be best represented before European contact. Focusing on the St. Lawrence Iroquois, The Innu, the Mi'kmaq and the lonely Beothuk located on Newfoundland beyond who will serve as a cautionary tale to the rest of the Natives of the Americas. Re Mi'kmaq pronunciation, an earlier comment was not accurate. The -aq ending is plural and is guttural with -maq very close to "mach" as in mach 1, mach two, etc or the composer Bach would rhyme. The word is actually three syllables, using English phonetics ME-GUhM-MACH for the plural. This is the form used when speaking of the tribe as a whole. Singular and as an adjective regardless of noun number Mi'kmaw ... again 3 syllables ME-GUhM-MAO. I am enjoying your presentation.

They ask if I smudge. I said no mam, I do not... Usually, when a Micmac smudged it meant it was time for War... But they would paint their faces dark & black. And they would hide in the woods.

For the sake of humor though...... It took me a while to realize that the drums were your sound track....... In all honesty, I was becoming a bit intimidated in a paranoid way, about what might be happening outside my house in the darkness. I am glad to have found the true source of those drums. No worries. Say nothing. Act casual. Keep up the good work

This was before there were Tee Pees. The Algonquin lived in Igloo-shaped tents. They would bend these trees & Branches in an arch. Just like when I was a child. They were covered with Animal skins with Fat on them. To Insulate them from the cold...

Wigwams are the name of the oval shaped tents you are referring to we also picked up the toboggan and snow shoes from them. They traded with Acadians and had zero conflicts because Acadians created irrigation ditches making previously un farmable land (because of the swaps new Brunswick people are called bogtrotters and new Brunswick, definitely bay of Funday and Nova Scotia are basically marsh lands with many swaps.

@@lindanwfirefighter4973they are not permanently set up so no they did not cake them in animal fat lol. But they were historically made out of tree bark and would be insulted with fur only in the winter. In the summer they had more of a open style to them to let air conditioning n and the animal fat thing even if a highly doubt is true will give the benefit of the doubt that maybe they did it in winter were things done't really rot but again not sur if this as any validity.

I think that your work, and your presentation of it, are both flawless. It is winter in my region. House and studio time, for the next half of a year....... I look forward to exploring and learning from all of your broadcasts. Incidentally, I am opening the doors to a small "alternative" school within the next three to six months. Could I have your permission to show and discuss your content to and with my students?

The consensus system of decision-making is also central to Quakers (Society of Friends). And criminal trials in most states (and definitely in Federal cases) require consensus ("unanimous verdict") even though nearly one-third of states where civil trials are concerned only require a majority for a verdict. Interesting to think about the different ways people in organized social groups deal with decision making and to remember that whatever way is preferred, it's may not be the only way a society uses.

The Mi'kmaq people would practice the bury the hatchet. The person or tribe they had issue with the Mi'kmaq put their hatchet on top of the enemies hatchet. That way if the tribe that had issue or the person had issue with the Mi'kmaq people the Mi'kmaq could grab their hatchet 1st if the person or enemies decide to retaliate.

Not quite sure the New France dismantled because of the break-up with the Natives. On the contrary they were with them - on the same side - while the Battle of the Abraham plains [1760].

Great job here .... unbiased non moralizing historical account which I respect. I find claims by the Mi'kmaq that there was a grand council pre European contact preposterous ie it doesn't even pass the sniff test. Imagine organizing a large group of 10-12 thousand hunter gatherer people over 300 000 plus km squared with no modern way of measuring time or navigations aids etc. They tried to push this 7 district grand council political organization narrative in several court cases like R v Marshall/Bernard which went to the supreme court of Canada but the courts explicitly rejected their historical factual accounts. Dr Steven Paterson's (a crown expert witness) description was almost always favored when the competing narrative's were presented to the courts. They concluded that the mik'maq lived in small distinct groups of 100-200 people with lose political affiliations between each other. That is why the british entered into separate treaties with each individual community. There was no grand council with 1 treaty. In fact there is no record of some communities even signing the only treaty 1760-1761 that survived hostile repudiation. . The original signatory communities agreed to try and convince other communities to sign the 1760 version; if there were a grand council this would not have been necessary. In the R v Marshall 1999 decision the supreme court decided the right to trade is restricted to the tradational territory of the community not the nation. There have been trial cases where claims to fish lobster were rejected because one member today was claiming rights to fish in the historical territory of another community 200 km apart.

Is there a notable entrance of a female group when the 6 become 6? I’ve been tracing Sikh before they were officially that and I’m trained to think everything that sounds like six and looks like silk is them. Today they still run the road on an industrial level with giant merchant cargo ships manied by Sikh turbans and gracious smiles. They were once the VI-kings as well… as it was an act called Viking and not a people group. An act of transporting goods on an industrial level. So these jesuits officially become that about the same time the Sikh officially become that… ending years I mean years of parallel existence literally. Well technically but I think the more I learn of the Jesuit Iroquois I’m thinking it didn’t end just the theatre changed yet again. Like a different kind of army for God. The sôôr that handles all the dirty biz. Rids the world of the garbage by getting them to kill themselves. Or just kidnapping the kids and torturing the old ways out of them.

Oh and have you considered Algonquin meaning Anglican? Like An-Glicca which in old English would mean “universal intelligence”. So as a controlled opposition, Romes favorite pet, I think it may be connected.
