Thank you for not rushing through the steps for removing the hard drive and for speaking clearly. I have one of those huge Dell Vista "something" that sits on the floor. Looking forward to recycling it if I can get help getting it out of my house onto the curb for bulky item pickup.😺
Thanks, Kevin! I know this is an old video, but it helped me find and remove the hard drive from my family's old Dell desktop. Now we can finally get rid of this old beast!
Thank you very much, kind sir!! You are a blessing. This is EXACTLY what I needed! I only wish that I had looked up this information years ago. I have two big doorstops that have been taking up space and now they can go bye-bye!
of course you are going to want to remove a hard drive before recycling your old computer. Once you recover your data from that drive from the computer you want to recycle, HIT IT WITH A HAMMER, or just put a drillbit thru it.
This was a Great Video easy to understand, I have an Old Hard Drive from a previous computer & it's been stting around & ive been wanting to get rid of it. Thanks
This video was very helpful...the computer person at the Senior Center sent me your RU-vid presentation. My hard drive crashed...I bought a new hard drive/high tower to replace the HP Pavilion a6522f PC. I have a Barracuda 7200.10 (360 Gbytes). I am going to the Senior Center next week to verify this. I am taking your email in case I need more computer help. Thank you very much.
Thank you for the video. Great advise and understandable too. What about removing the drive from a laptop? We have a crashed one of those for recycle also.
Many thanks Kevin for a brilliant video. I have always wondered how to take out the hard drive on my old desk top computer and now I know. Cheers and thanks for sharing.
This is the only video I found with same inside setup as mine, but I needed to see you remove screws for hard drive casing as I am unable to do it on mine. So I'm still stuck...
Awesome !!!! Thank you! I have a 2006 Hp, looks just like yours. The monitor is broken and I don't want to deal with transferring data from ~17 + years ago. I also saw another video where this guy makes a DIY CD reader. Can that be done with a hard drive ?
If the computer is not an all in one, I’d suggest looking into another monitor since they are so cheap these days. You could repurpose the hard drive and still pull data from it. I’m not sure if it would do the same type of thing the all in one CD reader does though.
Great finding just what I needed to know now I'm ready to attack! Thank you so much.. I'm coming back again you speak clearly and I don't end up scratching my head. :)
can you still access data from the hard drive by connecting it to a working computer (that it will now act as an external hard drive?) thank you for any info.
So do I just have to remove the hard drive to make disposal of my pc secure? Do I need to take any other security measures? Also, once I’ve done this does the remainder of the pc have a resale value? Thanks for your post it’s very helpful, have now subscribed to your channel.
Thanks Kevin!! I did press the like button, and I do appreciate your tutorial, got the lid to my old HP pavilian off NP, (that was a synch) and even located the HardDrive - Mine's says seagate, and it just sits there locked solid. No screws, no case - NO SCREWS!! It's covered by the label PLUS a stick-on silver sheet BUT THE DARN THING IS VERY hard to get off. I TRIED - !!!! help......!!
Ok so my sister had some repair people go in my room and I didn't notice that 2 of my old laptops were missing until I went to throw away the boxes many months after. Recently (a year later) my credit card had unauthorized charges on it (I can only gather that's how they got ahold of my CC) ? Aside from that, am I in danger with identity theft? I had factory reset them both and delayed disposing of them- I put them back in their respective boxes not thinking they would steal it but they in fact did....
Hi, is there anyway I can put the hard drive in another computer so I can see my stuff? My old computer shut down and it hasn’t turned on in years, so I’m kind of going to get rid of it but I didn’t get a chance to clear out my hard drive, or save the pictures and documents...
Hi Kevin. I removed the hard drive from a 2007 Dell desktop computer. I couldn't download the data to a flash drive or cloud before I removed the hard drive because I had gotten the blue screen of death years ago and didn't know where to go from there. I did know I shouldn't toss the computer with the hard drive intact. Here it is 2020, and I've finally stumbled across your video. Very helpful, thanks. Is there anyway I can have someone retrieve the old pictures and family recipe files I had on the hard drive on my computer before it crashed a very long time ago? I have saved the hard drive just in case someone is able to help me with this. (I just wouldn't want a wayward employee from somewhere stealing my identity if they were to do this.) Thanks in advance.
Hi Lise, good question. You’re right that there are services out there that can attempt to recover the data. I unfortunately don’t have a lot of experience in this realm.Make sure the place you are going is trusted - I unfortunately don’t think you’ll be able to retrieve the data without some help.
there are ways to dot it but you can wipe the drive completely and once you do that it cant be recoverd ever again and any ways most recycling place's do that cause they reuse them.
I would copy the contents from the old hard drive to a flash drive (USB stick). Then, you can hook that into another computer and copy the contents over. You could also copy the hard drive’s content to a third party cloud service, but I think the flash drive is going to be the fastest and most streamlined way.
I have worked for a small company going on 20 years that has never had a true IT professional. I'm not a trained IT guy but because I knew the most about computers back in the mid 2000s, I ended up doing 90% of the company's computer stuff over the years, including disposal. As such, I have 3 shoe boxes full of old hard drives that I've removed from every computer that we've retired. At some point I need to take the next step on to destruction.
@@davida8364 no, the computers were being retired and replaced. they went to electronic recyclers. I just removed every hard drive and they remain at my house to this day.
most places that accept recycled computers nowadays will not give you money. There are too many components out there. Basically what they do is refashion the recycled components into computer systems that will be able to be sold to low-budget consumers...to make low cost computers that may last for a few years, for poor people that can't afford the expensive, cutting edge stuff.
Here are some solutions you can try (and methods you shouldn't try). I don't want to see a comment telling me you microwaved your hard drive or put it in a bonfire! :)
SetApart Pics the the printer have a hard drive in it you remove the hard drive from the printer problem solved I saw this on a now cancelled CW TV spy show Nikita starring Maggie Q
Thanks for the tip. I haven't personally used that program, but hopefully your recommendation will help others. Always great to support free and open-source projects.
Hilliary used bleachbit to scrub her drives. As a matter of fact, you can use a simple scrubber program using machine language to overwrite allllllll data on a simple spindrive. The people who know how to do that are ensconced in the 3rd generation of virus scrubbers. I have been doing this sorta thing for over 20 years. data security, backup, and construction/destruction. All the tools are available if you know linux. You kids crack me up....you make me laugh....its so enjoyable to watch you all try to come up with your own solutions...
Look up hard drive recycling for a place near you that will accept them - some companies also offer recycling online. Also makes a good paper weight :)
