Before the Gilded Age reveals the extraordinary ways in which W. W. Corcoran- a financial pioneer and philanthropist- shaped the emerging cultural elite and changed the capital and the country both for better and for worse. A complex and controversial character, Corcoran influenced banking and finance, art and American culture, philanthropy, and the nation’s capital. Before the Gilded Age provides a colorful account of a political chameleon who successfully transcended political party, geography, and ideology to become one of the richest and most influential people in the country.
Copies of Before the Gilded Age are available for purchase through the Mark Twain Store; proceeds benefit The Mark Twain House & Museum. Books will be shipped after the event. We regret that we are NOT able to ship books outside the United States as it is cost-prohibitive to do so.

I loved touring the Mark Twain House and Museum. I’m from California and always appreciate the history of Connecticut and New England. The subject is an unusual topic.
