As information who want to do this: Check the Model Number on the LCD and search for the Model Number plus controller so that your sure that it works

What nobody ever mentions in these videos are that fact that there are dozens of different sized connectors for LCDs. These range from 24 pin LVDS connectors to 50 pin LVDS connectors, and then there are other standards as well used in older laptops. While most LVDS screens can be driven from the controller board, the problem is getting the right cables.

You should habe said that every old panel has a different connector and you need to buy the correct one. More modern panels have eDP (embedded display port) which is a connector standard between panels so you can use one controller with all of them. But you need to select one of three connector sizes.

In India we buy these modules for like 8 to 9 bucks , they has really reasonable quantity, we use these to repair TVs which got broken main pcb that can't be repaired

Newer ones even feature a usb-c Imput for data and power - neat!

In practice, it's quite difficult or expensive to find a matching controller board.

The only problem, sadly, is that those controller boards are often expensive and hard to find (exact to match). So the project has to have a hefty budget and a really specific, proprietary use case or you're just wasting time and money not grabbing a prefab screen. I have imagined making something with the old laptop screens I have and every time I'm reminded of the cost as they dont get cheaper with time. So for an old 900p screen you're still looking at a $30+ driver board (if you can even find it).

ive been doing this for the past 6 years. honestly the best way to get monitors on the cheap! aliexpress is filled with matching driver boards for all kinds of screens for dirt cheap prices. one thing i like to do is to stick these monitors back into the display part of the old laptops i get these from. its a free protective case thats already matching the monitor

Too bad the cost of that acrylic and all the other stuff needed makes such a build not viable. For less money you can buy a brand new monitor

Done this with two panels, one now mounted on an IKEA peg board in my lab and one mounted with a couple of simple 3D printed stands as a super-thin secondary PC monitor.

These boards usually just need resolution-specific firmware to be flashed through USB in order to use any LCD panels that have the same connector and voltage. The ones I bought came with default 1920x1080 firmware that matched my LCD so it worked out of the box

Older scrwens also have a ccfl backlight driver to worry about.

Ive been using LVDS driver boards for years, my FPV monitor is a 17" Laptop screen but anyone thinking of doing this please research your screen for compatibility with a given driver board as not all boards will work with all screens, ideally you want to also get one supplied with firmware specifically for your screen as the generic ones with many firmware's to flash can be a pain to get working and sometimes a fully compatible firmware isnt available and you will be forced to settle with a border down one side of the screen but one with firmware for your exact screen will work flawlessly.

It would be so Awesome if could do the same for smartphone display

Quick note, many modern screens rather rely on eDP. They just need external power but usually are electrically compatible to normal DP.

That's really nice but can be more complicated than it looks. For example 40 pin LVDS and EDP connectors are similar and now, with oled and touch screen panels, EDP connectors with the same number of pins can have different pinnouts

I have an old VA panel monitor and I haven't use it for years as turns out it was broken, something wrong with the monitor controller but the screen and the board is still works fine. And at the same time my monitor that I use everyday got broken because of the QFN chip got burnt, the whole screen is messed up too, and I have no idea how to solder and replace new one, so I decide to swap my current monitor controller board to my old monitor and It work just fine as I'm writing this comment.

It is not that easy like he said in this video. Not all connectors have the same amount of pins, the same signals on the same pins or use the same voltage (for example it could be 5V, 12V or 19V).

Not really nice until you have a display port connector, that’s pretty much the new standard for monitors, especially gaming monitors.

I made 2 like 4 years ago for my security cameras out of old laptop screens ones 10in and other is 14 in and just mounted to a wall between 2 pieces of wood I notched down center to hold them they work great.

The interface that connects the controller to the LCD panel is the LVDS (Low Voltage Differential Signalling) interface.

With 30 pin eDP screens, you can use it without a controller, just make sure you have a DisplayPort cable

There should have been a law in place from the beginning that requires all laptop manufacturers to include video in so laptops can be repurposed instead of filling up landfills. I can't believe they still haven't caught on.

but you have to match the lcd type 6\8 bit the signaling lvds / orientation, i have 3 lcd's lying around since the last decade trying to figure out which board to select.

done this to two screens already, worked great in both cases, i even made a 3d printed enclosure for the controller boards, i kept the screen enclosures for max protection. On one of them i even tried scratching off the outer polarizing filter (removing the used glue took over 10h as i had the stupid idea of using azetone to dissolve the glue, what turned it into a smeary, somewhat sticky mess. i should have let it dry and scraped it off) to create a private viewing monitor (needs glasses with correclty allingned linear polarised filter to display an image, without them you will only see the purely white light from the backlight (unless you view it from extreme side angles, then you may see see the outlines of the displayed things slightly but not more than that) so noone can see what you are actually dooing xD) and that suprisingly worked aswell even though i used a chisle and an uncomfortable ammount of force, but no carcks, not even scratches remained !

I was wanting to see if there's a way to convert the laptop internal display output to a physical connector? My desk configuration has a mixing console and other audio equipment and there's no room for a laptop, I enjoy multiple displays but there's only one output on my laptop, for years I've been trying to investigate a viable way to connect the internal controller to an external display or at least be translated in some way.

This controller board if you are getting from china then their chips overheat and display blacks out. I have been there and done that and it's not worth the money and time. Applying thermal paste and fan also doesn't help.

why is your voice less energetic in a Short?😅 I simply reused an LCD to a laptop with a dead LCD. Luckily, the interfaces are compatible but the mount isnt. I simply taped the panel with duct tape.

Most controller boards are way too expensive. They cost more then a cheap used monitor. I would try my luck with a Raspberry Pi and LVDS directly.

In my laptop's case, the very controller is broken.

simple tip: dont trash your laptop in the 1st place. they’ll all awesome and powerful machines. no matter their age they have tremendous abilities and had 1000s of hours of designing put into them to make them great. they don’t like to die. and usually can be fixed easily. especially if you have the capability to remove the screen as mentioned in the video. you also wouldn’t believe how much faster a machine could run with simple upgrades to hardware OR running linux if you really wanted some speed. you really could give your laptop a new life. even if it is too old, there are lots of fun things you can do with it. old software, backup machine, retro station,etc. i pulled a trashed sony vaio laptop from the trash/recycling.. the store had a policy against removing stuff from the garbage but I begged an employee into letting me keep it completely dead at 1st 250gb hdd with all the previous data on it.. I easily got past the password to find a ton of viruses. 2gb DDR2 RAM (turns out the ram clips that held the ram onto the board were failing/degrading. i put guitar clips inside the laptop to hold the ram down to the board & make a proper connection) core 2 duo of some kind windows vista terrible wear and cosmetic damage kind of failing backlight(just the edges are extra bright and have spots on them) luckily came with a charger fixed it up and installed linux mint xfce (newest lightweight version) and it runs like a dream. didn’t even upgrade any of the hardware inside.
