Update 9-27-20 - Guys a mistake in this video was just pointed out to me, so far I have measured a 520L and a 521c, I have not measured a 521L or a 520C yet.
My Instagram page / kensmithfishing2.0
This is Video 7 in the "Before you buy a bass boat watch this" or The 2020-21 Bass Boat Search series of videos (see playlist on my channel) where I walk you through me spending the day in a bunch of different boat brands and models through the fall of 2020 looking for my next boat. If you didn't see the first 6 videos you can go back and watch them first, (reviewed Bass Cat Puma Hybrid the boat with the Champion 203 style hull, a Charger 210 Elite & a Ranger 521C). This is review of a Ranger Z521L.
In this video I score the boat 1-20 in 5 different categories, Fishability, Performance, Amenities, Fit & Finish and then a 5th catch all that includes feedback from friends that own them, trailer, options, feedback from fiberglass shops in Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas asking them what they see as the best 3 boats, based upon construction, currently being built (since they see how we beat them up). And then we ask them which they see the most non-impact damage to the hulls with (least well built). Then for tournament anglers we include a 6th 20 point category looking to see who has the best contingency prize package available. Next up is a Caymus!
#ranger520L #beforeyoubuyabassboatwatchthis #greatbassboatsearch2020
In addition to this boat i plan to spend the day in a more traditional Bass Cat go fast boat, a Ranger a Nitro, couple Skeeters, Triton, Falcon, several Phoenix models, a Vexus (if we can find one) a Blazer, a Ballastic, Pro Gator and anything else that my viewers suggest that I can find to try.

Ken, you are doing a GREAT JOB. This also a great learning experience for guys who can’t afford a boat of this caliber. It allows them to see what will be available to them in the next 5 years or so with an honest opinion. Thanks for doing this series as 90% of us anglers would NEVER have this opportunity. Headed to Pickwick to catch a few smallies and enjoyed this video. 👍

Ken here's something that doesn't get talked about much and I've seen it from at least three different brands... Which of these boats spew gas when you try to fill them up, few things are more annoying than getting fuel all over you before hitting the lake! BTW loving this series, always exciting to get the notifications.

Tell you what Ken I fished out of a new Blazer 625 Pro Elite this week and I was impressed by that boat. Yes a light boat at 1400 pounds but I didn’t think it would fish as good as it did and that thing would fly and handle the rough water better than expected. Somebody please cough up a new Blazer. I really look forward to these videos Ken. Good job buddy!

The “lift” issue is interesting...had that issue with a Z20 and it just didn’t ride well at all. Years and years later the set up guys figured out you could cup the hell out of the prop and get it to lift. The C boats lift really well.

Hey Ken. So far I have enjoyed watching these videos on the different boats. Ive got a good friend of mine who has had plenty of high end boats and he will be the first one to tell you that there isn't a perfect boat. So much of these boats pros and cons are subjective, but some are not. When it comes to fit and finish the boat either has it or it doesn't. I have by now means owned a lot of boats, but I just recently bought a 2018 BassCat lynx. I have always wanted a BassCat. Especially being from Arkansas. Its a great boat and the fit and finish is awesome, but there are still things that I'm not a fan of. I think one of the most important aspects of buying a new boat is making sure you have a good dealer close to you that you can trust. Unfortunately right of the bat I had an issue with my boat. It was a simple fix, but the dealer was horrible to deal with. Of course BassCat took care of it, but they shouldn't have to deal with things like that. Thats why you have a dealer network. Good luck on the search and look forward to seeing more videos.

Hi Ken, to clarify this is certainly not the first Ranger trailer with 4 brakes as Chris mentioned, my 2013 Z520C had them and I'm sure most of them do, mine had the hand brake as well and maybe that's the deciding factor; you can easily tell by looking thru the rims. Great reviews! You and I had lunch last year at BJ's, I just sold my Z520C and will be going with a custom Ballistic, should be here in October. If you want to check it out, let me know!

Good reviews. I have 2013 520C. Never had any problems. If you check on you tube the 520C is wider across the the bow at the seat than the 521C. Loaded down two guys about 220 lbs and boat is loaded heavy. I run Merc 250 Pro XS TWO STROKE WITH 24 3 blade Trophy plus prop fast hole shot with 10ft blades. Top end Gps is 74.5 loaded full of gas two big guys and heavy tournament loaded full of gas. The Fury prop is the wrong prop for most Rangers. You get this prop because it’s the newest. One of my sponsors is a boat dealer and A prop expert. I found this out from him. Fury is good on some boats but 520 or 521 C they are no good. Don’t know about the L but I hear the same thing about the props but no no experience. I fish tidal waters and have to run over skinny water to get to a lot of my fishing holes and get out of. So hole shot is everything. No one I know likes the 520 L all went back to C boats most 520C same for The 521s. My boat has been flawless. Maybe you got one of the Monday morning boats. I had a 361 that was horrible and Ranger replaced the boats. No one at that time would do that. Also ride in 520c and 521C is not much different in my opinion. Good luck in your search. I think you will be back in a Ranger C boat. Enjoy your videos.

What made mine accessible was I changed to lithium’s and that allowed me to put 3 batteries on the port side where 2 regular group 27’s were before. I’m surprised your new boat didn’t come with the holder. The sump cover is. Or too hard to get off even with the jackplate pump there. Love the reviews by the way. The one thing i'm curious about is about the brakes. Are they electric or hydrologic. I don't like the surge brakes. If you have to back down steep ramps, the surge brakes are useless. I've seen boats get jacked knifed into riprap walls in the side of ramps at the same time the truck was jack knifed into the boat causing damage to both. Luckily, this didn't happen into the water and another truck with a winch was able to get him out of that situation. Where as other boats with electric brakes could be used with more gain to control the decent.
@txman201
@txman201 3 года назад
Surge brakes ARE hydraulic, but are disabled by an electrically controlled valve on modern trailers with disc brakes. Jackknifing on a ramp in reverse is an operator issue or inadequate tow vehicle (need enough mass to handle the trailer, not get dragged by it). I have never seen a boat trailer with electric brakes as dunking the components is an issue.
@tvance111
@tvance111 3 года назад
@@txman201 You're right, mostly. If you are backing down a very steep ramp as is the case at many ramps in Tn, Ky and W. Va, where i am from. The surge brakes DO NOT WORK in reverse like solely electric brakes do. And this can lead to an out of control situation for even an experienced person like myself. How do i get the right to say i am an experienced person at towing? It started in the 1980s when i learned to tow with an old 3 speed on the column and a 4 speed in the floor. Eventually i got lucky with an automatic in the military. The problem with some was the fact of towing things around on a ship. It's interesting when the surface is constantly changing under you and 3 to 5 times bigger than your tow vehicle. Then, i moved on and got some experience with heavier equipment and towing them. The most challenging was driving a truck that drills the holes for pole bases and poles themselves with a trailer and with poles on them. This was really fun going through portions of Nashville when the whole truck and trailer were nearly 80 feet long. So, when i'm operating a truck, or someone I'm with is, it's within laws and tolerances and the capabilities of the tow vehicle and the operator. Because, honestly, there isn't a half ton truck out there that isn't rated to tow twice what a bass boat weighs. So, to even suggest that a surge brake is acceptable is either naive or shows your blissful ignorance. And i hope you never have the misfortune to be the one, or be launching next to the person that has a surge brake on that boats trailer on a steep ramp
@tvance111
@tvance111 3 года назад
@@txman201 I think you missed the point all together. Yes, you can disengage them. That's without debate. But, the point is that surge brakes leave you with NO brakes and a 2000 to 6000 pound weight dragging you backwards into a worsening situation.
@txman201
@txman201 3 года назад
@@tvance111 I pointed out immediately that disc surge brakes ARE disabled when in reverse, not "you can disengage them." That therefore means there are no brakes at all. By the way, the word is spelled hydaulic. The gotcha on the tow vehicle is "proper" tow vehicle - for a boat that will be backed down a steep ramp.. This isn't about the towing chart in the vehicle manual. Instead, it's about relative mass of vehicle vs. boat, traction/balance, and speed (backing down the ramp). The entire weight of the towed mass isn't pulling down the ramp - only a small portion vectors that way, with the rest still being vectored downward. The problems start with tow vehicle being too lightweight compared to the towed load. Pickups are notorious for insufficient rear axle weight for good traction, making matters worse. Think 2WD F150 with small block engine, the flagship lightweight tow vehicle. Back down the ramp too fast and you're going to have issues stopping it. Hurrying down a ramp in reverse is why some tow vehicles get into trouble stopping. Kinetic energy is a bad deal with too little tow vehicle traction. I've been on some scarey steep ramps with mine without issue as I understand the dynamics at play. The steeper the ramp, the slower I back down, resulting in no issue stopping. I've seen vehicles get wet because they were moving too fast, with the driver expecting flat ground traction for stopping at the very end of the ramp - those plans are operator error, and don't end well.
@tvance111
@tvance111 3 года назад
@@txman201 I'm never to big to learn from my mistakes or learn something new. Like Hydaulic... did you mean hydraulic? I see where i messed up. I will only say there is nothing correct about spell correct. Haha. Sorry! I missed that one and thanks for pointing it out. For the sake of this thread, I'll leave it in. Maybe some can get a laugh at my mishap. You're correct about all that you said earlier. But let's simplify it for sake of speed and not writing books. Lol. 7000 pound truck. By chance, it was an F150. But it was a 4 door , 4x4 and had tools in n the back (in a gang box). The truck weighed, easily over 7000lbs. The boat, in this case was a Nitro, no gear to speak of and a half of a tank of fuel. We weren't going 2 miles. The truck weighed a ton more than the boat. Easily... This man tows all the time. It's part of his job. Like it was part of mine. Now inexperience can get you into double very quickly. As we all know and you are pointing out very well. But even those of us with experience, with the wrong equipment, i.e. surge brakes, can be dangerous in the wrong situation. He and i had backed down this same ramp several times with no issues. This day happen to be early morning, high humidity and cold. There had been a couple other trucks down the ramp before us. We made sure not to be the test dummies. So much for that theory. Haha He started to EASE back down the ramp just like they had done before. The only thing different. They had electric brakes and my friend had surge brakes. To add insult to injury, other boats continued to filter out of that ramp right behind our incident with no problems UNTIL another Nitro came thru and almost did the same thing. He was a few hours later and the weather had warmed considerably. I watched a half ton, king cab, 2x4 chevy back a 24 foot pontoon (with a second level you can walk on) down the ramp after our lil incident. It had electric brakes. I told my brother (the driver) to adjust the gain up on the controller so the trailer was catching more of the weight. He did and it worked like a charm. We went fishing in a old pontoon that day. Not a new Nitro. Now, i'm not knocking Nitro. They're pretty good boats and for the money. Nice! $20,000 cheaper than some of its competitors. But there are some things i won't have. Why risk your and your friends AND innocent others safety?

"Performance" does not equal "speed". Last time I checked, fishing isn't a race. If the 520L handles big water better than the 520C, but is a tad slower - that is a trade off I am willing to make ALL DAY! But I live up north where there is actual big water. Most southerners think a 1 foot chop is "3 footers".

I understand speed is not handling rough water, my preference, having been in both, is the C boat, it has better lift and the nose is more responsive to the throttle, which makes it easier to drive in big water, and we fish Toledo and Rayburn, which isn’t Erie, but at Toledo specifically you can’t “run a bank”, you run down the middle of the lake in boat lanes and you can’t choose your “angles” so, I’d rather run 5 footers on Erie (I have) than 3 footers in Toledo.

@@KenSmithFishing I really wish Ranger had a "changelog" of all the differences between the models by year. There is so much conflicting info out there it's ridiculous. On bbcboards.net tons of people are saying the 520L is better in rough water. If what your saying is true, then the 520C would be better for me because I'm dealing with Mille Lacs style waves (narrowly spaced big waves).

How much does your boat weigh fully rigged on the trailer ?
@KenSmithFishing

Mark lots of variable, most motors 350-400 lbs, batteries another 250-350, 50 gallons of fuel weighs about 315, ultrex I’d guess is 100 lbs, battery Charger, electronics, 2000 baits??? So I’d say easy 1000 lbs in excess of hull weight unless your running Lithiums

@@KenSmithFishing i think your mercury is 550+ pounds. Charger like Ken's is 30 pounds! Spare prop? Cooler contents? It really adds up fast. Even electronics needs to be noted - three 12 inch units are over 30 pounds with brackets and harness,
