Before You Buy a Bass Boat Watch This is is me reviewing the Vexus VX20 bass boat, this is Video 14 in this series, or the 2020-21 Great Bass Boat Search series of videos (see playlist on my channel). I walk you through me spending the day in a bunch of different boat brands and models through the fall of 2020 looking for my next boat. If you didn't see the first 12 videos you can go back and watch them first, (reviewed Bass Cat Puma Hybrid the boat with the Champion 203 style hull, a Charger 210 Elite, a Ranger 521C & 520L and a Caymas CX21 and a Bullet 21 SDC).
In video 2 or 3 I will score the boat 1-20 in 5 different categories, Fishability, Performance, Amenities, Fit & Finish and then a 5th catch all that includes feedback from friends that own them, trailer, options, feedback from fiberglass shops in Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas asking them what they see as the best 3 boats, based upon construction, currently being built (since they see how we beat them up). And then we ask them which they see the most non-impact damage to the hulls with (least well built). Then for tournament anglers we include a 6th 20 point category looking to see who has the best contingency prize package available. Next up is a Phoenix!

There’s a cool story involving Keith Daffron and how Vexus came to be. It involves making fiberglass/aluminum tree stands in a random warehouse near Flippin to perfect their process during their two year no-compete with Ranger. Really cool company.

Another great review! I believe you are near the limits of its speed. On the BBC Vexus forum its a 68-71 mph rig loaded. The 21 will be near the same speed. Why doesn’t anyone ever talk about how these talon and power pole mounts act as shovels when trying to get on pad? I’ve witnessed this over and over in friends boats and mine until I removed them. IMO, this is THE ONLY way to to mount power poles (directly to the transom)
@dlefeb67
@dlefeb67 3 года назад
Every boat is different in design. With the mount, I can lower the poles further than the option on the Vexus, thus given me better contact with the bottom. The mounts in no way slow my hole shot as its almost instantaneous. within 2-3 seconds.

I really like some of the features on this boat but the price point on some of these boats are ridiculous but as long as people continue to pay the price on these outrageously priced boats they’re just going to continue to go up. You would think as much as these companies charge for a boat they would pay their help much better.
@brians.4488
@brians.4488 3 года назад
Ken as well as you do in the tournaments, just one series below the majors (costa) it seems that not getting a Phoenix would be hard to do considering the incentives they pay for a win!! So glad they stepped up the $$$$$ I've said for years now that the big motor companies, boat manufacturers, electronic companys, and probably some big rod and reel companies could pay out more to GROW the sport. Any ways sorry to get off subject but had to throw that out there. That vexus looks like it's a very deep v for the big rollers. I'm interested in the tippy test on this one for sure. If you switch from a ranger to something different take the one you decide on out on a really bad windy day before purchasing. Keep up the great videos.
@KenSmithFishing
@KenSmithFishing 3 года назад
Brian as the Fonz would say "correct-ta-mondo" on both issues. First contingency has weight, part of why I stayed in a Ranger, for a long time Ranger Cup was the premier deal if you fish FLW, Phoenix is best now (for FLW specifically), but in the last 10 years I've fished about 40 FLW events and only won 2. So you have to weigh the likelihood of winning vs money spent, vs value, vs ride, vs resale. Around here there are so many circuits and the contingency payouts vary so much,...well that's why I added that category, said another way, I've won more than 2 "other" tournaments in the last 10 years. And on ride, when I get down to decision time I'll definitely spend another "bad" day in my final 2 or 3 options before dropping⛰ of 💰
@garrettmarshall225
@garrettmarshall225 3 года назад
I would think the “air ride” seats would add a considerable amount of weight. However having noticed how many anglers have back issues (myself included), would love to have them.
@dlefeb67

Question on the kill switch Fob. Good idea, but if you have it in your pocket.....summer or spring time...your running in the rain, if that thing gets wet while running 70 mph and kills the motor it wont be a happy moment. Also, you have to hit the water prior to it killing the motor. Great idea, but has its drawbacks for sure. Sometimes simplicity is still the winner.
@KenSmithFishing
@KenSmithFishing 3 года назад
agreed. on the rain thing, if it's like the life jackets (which I believe it is) it's actually the water pressure that sets them off, not wetness, most have to be submerged in 4-6" of water to go off

Looks to me like Vexus has salt water roots. The no air space live well has been around for several years. Salties call it a bait well. I’d be willing to bet that boat also has a “scooped” live well intake so that it fill without pumps while the boat is running. The recessed boarding ladder, switches, suspension seats, and longitudinal fuel tank are all things you’d regularly see in salt water boats. I’ve also been wondering how long it would take Bass boat manufactures to start finishing the interior with gel coat like saltwater boats. I grew up a bass fisherman, then turned toward saltwater. The one thing I miss now that I’ve turned back to bass boats is the Utilitarian or more hard core finishing of the boats. Glitter and carpet! Are we serious about our boats or just showing off the lines and the level of bling we can achieve. I won’t lie, I missed the bass boat bling in salt water boats. Right up till the first tuna hit the deck. Loving this series. Can’t wait to see the new Gambler! Thanks for these very informative reviews.

Rodger, thanks for the add, they didn't do the water scoop but Caymas did, but 100% correct that saltwater boats have been more innovative, likely because the bass boat market is 10K-11K new boats a year and very regional, saltwater market is global, it's huge

Blending paint will not be as easy as it is made to be. Like any automobile during painting you need a start and end line to blend. The boat will offer none. Paint will never be as tough as gel coat. Vexus Aluminum boat owners are finding this out as they have the same paint on the glass models. The positive move by Vexus is they are now offering the glass boats with Gel coat. I have seen one and is a huge improvement over the paint.

Most of the reviews I've read, even by some who own it, the biggest knock on Vexxus is that they are "ugly". For me, one of the most interesting features are the SEATS.

Big C, it is a different looking boat, and it has a unique ride, I'm not sure I have a handle on the ride just yet, so stay tuned. By the way not the first or only boat to offer air ride seats, as I recall it seems Stratos offered them years ago and then quit and I know you can get them as an option on Nitros as well.

So I gotta say...my brother has a 22' version. The shiny Venus logo things on the side are actually metal and yep they're on the heavy side and yep..they came loose. Pretty sorry design for a $90k boat. Ninety frikken thousand dollars. WTH has this come to??? And they make em up to $110,000 if you're really well heeled. Yikes!!!

$100,000 boat with great electronics and lithium batteries! Insane. Only designed for the pros and Phoenix is out of touch with the weekend angler on price point.

Captain Ron interestingly it looks like you can drop a few options and get this boat down in similar price range as some other premium price boats. On the ride, jury still out for me on that, I'll explain in one of the next videos

Wow a company that is actually innovative. New livewells, gas tank, power pole mounting, sea deck. Well done. I do NOT like the automotive paint, ugly.

Another all hype offering from the ex ranger guard. I would never own this gimmick tub. You can't find the weight because they are extremely heavy. Randy Hopper would make a good commie the way he manipulates the truth.

Your not the only one that's stated similar thoughts however some Vexus guys are saying the boat is really light....thinking we may have to find a truck scale somewhere.
