I think you need both. You need the perimeter cameras to see what you're dealing with, but you also need the burglar alarm to physically alert you and the neighbors there is a home invasion in progress. You need a vey loud siren and strobing lights at the point of entry. you need to make the crooks feel disadvantaged, a strobing light keeps blinding the eyes and prevents the crook's eyes from adjusting. A very loud siren will hurt their ears and keeps them from hearing each other. So what you want is confusion outside whilst you get ready for them inside.
@Lughnerson

Start with the low-tech security devices that don't require electricity and monthly fees. These include high quality door handle locks, dead bolts, 3" screws on reinforced latch plates & hinges, thorny bushes under low windows with safety film, window locks, motion sensor lighting and sound alarms. And there are more things you can do also. Burglars like easy in, easy out.

Deter - Detect - Delay - Defend - Decamp...plan and prepare in that order.

@Lughnerson, I have 8 ring cameras and most are battery and solar powered. Of which, to your point, also require monthly fees. My garage was burglarized while I was awake on an early Sunday morning. Why? Cameras are only a deterrent to burglars if they get caught in the ACT of committing the crime! And what are the chances of catching them in the act??? Slim to none! Unless you are sitting on your cameras 24/7. Sorry but I work and have a family to support. In the meantime, security systems ARE an actual deterrent because they are motion activated alarm type systems at entry points which immediately notify you and the police!
@GeorgeLangabeer
@GeorgeLangabeer 2 года назад
1. You’re talking about Ring cameras. Ring cameras are cheaply made crap. Not worth the money. 2. What did your security system do for you in the case of your garage burglary? The answer is NOTHING. Cameras are a much bigger deterrent. This is coming from a guy that has interviewed over 1000 thieves on the subject. They could care less about burglar alarms. But they don’t like cameras because of the evidence they provide police. So cameras work before and after the fact. Burglar alarms are 100% reactive and do nothing for you proactively. Yes, they notify the police. But 95% of the criminal is gone before the police even come close. Then you’re left with nothing.

@@GeorgeLangabeer uhhhh ring cameras are not the cheap sir. Forking out $200-$250 per each spotlight or floodlight cam I do not consider cheap by comparison to what your average homeowner can afford! Now maybe you are one of those super wealthy people that has a multi-thousand dollar CCTV system at their house. Well then that is a different story. But the average homeowner is not going to spend that kind of money!
@GeorgeLangabeer
@GeorgeLangabeer 2 года назад
Let me clarify. I meant Ring is cheaply made, not cheap in price. There are many options out there that are better than Ring & LESS expensive. So please don’t misunderstand what I was trying to say. We offer security cameras that start at $99 that are better than Ring. You don’t have to buy an expensive camera system to protect yourselves. For the record, my home is currently protected with cameras that are $179. Cheaper than Ring & they work more effectively. That’s what I’m saying.

In my experience with home security and surveillance electronics, it's about "layers". When one layer is penetrated or unable to address the issue, another is there. Relying only on one layer appears to yield cons. While it is understood that this video is talking specifically about burglaries, let's look at the whole picture of "security". The first step is always accepting reality for what it is. We all must be vigilant about our surroundings. Proper Planning and Preparation Prevents Poor Performance. Do not be so distracted that you don't scan your surroundings for possible signs of trouble. When you see something, you also need to address it appropriately. Example: A car has been following you as you were driving since the freeway, making every turn you do. Drive away from your home to a public area with people around. If they are still following you, call the police. In regards to residence security... Layer 1: Exterior Detection - Having a surveillance system around the perimeter of the place which also provides notifications and archivable footage is beneficial. Combined with intercom can help to alert the burglar that a live person has caught them. At the same time, there may also be scenarios where the burglar is a bit bolder or the homeowner may not have yet installed cameras around the entire perimeter, leaving blind spots. Maybe there are some blind spots. Another scenario is when sleeping and the user does not respond to the notification(s). That's where additional layers come in. Layer 2: Security/Alarm System Burglary: If the burglar or HOME INVADER decides to continue past the cameras, whether by face covering and clothes or destroys them, tripping the security system's burglary portion can come into play, especially when occupying the home. When not at home and unable to respond to the notifications, it is helpful that a monitoring company can fill in that gap. You may even be able to work with the monitoring company at times when they call, and you can verify with your cameras. Another vulnerability I have seen is notification appliance placement. Most of the time there is only ONE indoor siren, which is often times on the control panel/keypad combo itself. Furthermore it's commonly placed in areas where the siren is not very audibly effective. You need to place sirens throughout the residence where the sound(s) can be undoubtedly noticed. On my system, I installed an exterior indoor siren which can be heard everywhere, even through closed doors. Additionally I installed an outdoor bell to help notify neighbors that something is wrong in the residence, and it is labeled as such. I have even talked with my neighbors about the bell. Even if there is a slight chance someone outside will notice, it's better than nothing. Now what if the burglar is not a person, but an element of nature? Can cameras call for help in those incidents? No. Not even your pet. Security is not limited to just human burglars and home invaders. Fire: Smoke detectors linked with a monitored security system makes sense for valid reasons. Whether you are home or not, when there is a fire, there are some residents who are not always emotionally stable to deal with these situations efficiently, and having trained personnel to guide them could actually help save their lives and property. The cameras will not indicate a fire alarm, but they may catch a suspect committing arson, if applicable. However, that is among the perimeter. If the fire starts inside, the cameras will not help with notifications. Most residential fires are smoldering fires, but in the event of a working fire, having someone else work on dispatching the fire department while the resident(s) focus on evacuation, if occupying, can save time. Plus, when you're not home and unable to respond to notifications at the time, you have another team monitoring and can take action. Carbon Monoxide: This is a SILENT KILLER. This gas is odorless, colorless and tasteless. If you have gas driven appliances in your residence, you need these. Carbon Monoxide displaces the oxygen in your blood, pretty much leading you to Asphyxia. Your only option is to evacuate when this gas is detected and let the Fire Department deal with it. Deep sleepers or heavily exposed victims of this gas are likely not to react effectively. Therefore alarm monitoring can help to avoid this as in most cases, alarm monitoring companies are required to dispatch the Fire Department when a carbon monoxide alarm is received, genuine or false. This is not something you want to take chances with. Alarm monitoring with this trio of detection is said to also be able to get a discount on your homeowner's insurance. Why? Because with alarm monitoring with these functions, you show your property to be at a lesser risk should disaster occur. But you have to do it RIGHT. Don't setup a "sub-standard" system. That's most of the problems I see with home security systems is the system is not even designed properly, leaving vulnerabilities. Layer 3: Manual Defense - When all other defenses are penetrated and the threat is still active, you must have a plan ready and have muscle memory developed to exercise the corresponding defensive actions to protect yourself and your loved ones. This can range from hiding/barricading from an intruder, combat defense, evacuation routes, meeting places, etc. With a full system design of Vigilance Protocols, Surveillance, Security and Defense Protocols, this creates a multilayer defense to discourage burglars and home invaders from considering your residence as a target. With the assistance of alarm monitoring, especially with panic switches when on premises, someone else can work on calling authorities while you can focus your full attention on defense, even in the case where you see coming intruders on your cameras while you're home. Be safe.

I was looking for an outdoor camera to keep an eye on my dogs in the yard when I'm not home. ru-vid.comUgkxOXxsTZ3ptV_Pk0fFl8bNZvVqeoqBQFwe Tried a different one that was absolutely terrible, so I got these instead. They work perfectly! With 3 of these cameras I can see every corner of the yard, and they were very easy to set up. The best part is I only get the footage I want to see, not hours of videos of the bird feeder swaying in the breeze.

Great video it is addressing things in a manner that I feel better prepare me to protect my family. I was looking for a home security service or something to protect my home and the older salesman told me the exact same thing. He said my goal shouldn’t be dealing with a burglar after they break into my home it should be preventing or deterring them from trying in the first place. He said an alarm and a monitoring service alerts you after the fact by then the burglar could have hurt if not killed one of your loved ones. He told me to get a camera system for the exterior of my home with real-time alert notification and a dog. Those two things will let you know something is going on before a person breaks into your home. You know at that time if a person persists they have bad intentions that’s when the 911 and if needed a gun comes into play. I have followed that advice every since that day.

Traditional burglar systems (with smoke sensors too) are great, work well, adding cameras (layers), is smart too. Quick story - we have both outside cameras, and a traditional alarm system which has door, window, glass break, and smoke sensors. Our traditional alarm system is monitored, we do pay the monthly fee. Just yesterday, our alarm system sent me a text and a push notification (to my smart phone) that one of our smoke alarms went off, my wife and I were out-and-about, just enjoying the day. The central station called me to let me know, and I asked them to send the fire department, which they did. Long story short, our 19 year old grandson was home alone, he smoked a cigarette in the bathroom (totally against the rules of our house), threw the lit butt into the trash can in the bathroom, and of course a fire started. The fire did not get out of control, but it could have. We were alerted, the central station dispatched the fire department, I've got the whole thing documented via my outside cameras, and the events registered within the traditional alarm system. Nobody got hurt, this is #1. There was literally no damage to the house (we lost the one small bathroom trash can). This one event makes my years of paying for the monitoring system worth it. I'm a big fan of both traditional alarm systems (installed by professionals), and cameras too.

Yes, I agree you don't need to have your alarm system monitored, unless your insurance company requires it, because nowdays you can monitor it yourself especially with Video Verification Alarms. (like the Hikvision AX Pro or the Risco Agility) But after working in this industry for over 40 years I can tell you that cameras will not stop people breaking into your house. You need something to make them get out quick, thats what your alarm system does for you. As a lot of people have commented here, You Need Both if you really want to protect you and your house properly.

I had Vivint security and to be honest I think it was somewhat valuable. It wasn’t cheap that being said. I think I had to pay around $2500 for the equipment including installation. I had 3 cameras, ring door bell, smart door locks on all exit doors, nest thermostat, water sensors under every water source, glass break sensors on all glass, carbon monoxide sensors and motion detectors on all doors and windows. And a smart security panel that I could change or set alarms and watch videos etc along with viewing it on my phone. I paid like $60 a month for the service, which they did send out security or police whenever we had alarms trip even if it was false alarms and my wife or I didn’t pick up police or security were sent. The problem I had with Vivint is when we sold that house and tried to cancel they wanted almost $1200. We paid for our equipment up front so we owned it outright at that point. We didn’t sign any contract either. It was a nightmare to get rid of it and that is the one reason I wouldn’t deal with them again. We settled and paid $700 just to get rid of the damn services we no longer even used since the new homeowners didn’t want to pay for the security service.

I would advise getting both if you can. You can actually have the two work together. Especially if you have a business in a busy area, your outside cameras are not going to do much unless you are monitoring it 24/7. Having vibration sensors for your glass and beams for the roof area and sensors on your doors can be a better and cheaper way of alerting you. Also dependant on the size of the area you want to monitor a camera maybe over kill, having a small motion sensor might work better. Another advantage is qith an alarm once armed everything is set. with a Cctv system you can program it to alert you at certain times but if you are leaving at unplanned times you would need to go into the settings to program which cameras you want to alert you.

the alarm is there to warn me when somebody breaks in. i train myself and my wife to grab our children, any firearm, and barricade ourselves inside a room while the thing automatically calls us to verify an event. if we do not answer, they call the police. if it goes off when we are not home, we use the cameras AND motion sensors to check to see if any movement is occurring in the home. i owned the thing for 7 years without a false alarm penalty fee. the loud ringing is disorienting like a light shined into your face. actually saved me from a home invasion once.

I need to get a security system/cameras asap. The crime around here is getting bad. Crimes are no longer “hidden”. People will do what they will in plain daylight with people around and the police have a slow response due to cut backs etc. Since I can’t ”carry” and protect my property outside of my actual house, not even ON my property where I live, a security system/cameras is my only option for protecting me and my home and it’s hard to figure out what is good out there. I have Both ADT and cameras. I feel everyone should have both. A burglar isn’t going to want to hang around once those high pitch alarms go off. Especially if you have close next door neighbors and you don’t live in an isolated place. Like some ppl have their neighbors a mile down the road.
@zerrodefex
@zerrodefex Год назад
And if your neighbors are very close by an alarm alerts them as well. We had a rash of garage and shed burglaries in the area where someone just broke into one after another going down the street one night, no alarms on any of them. If one had an alarm (especially the first) he likely would have been scared off and gone elsewhere before hitting the next ones if a bunch of witnesses had been woken up and were now looking outside wondering what happened.

I'd much rather have piece of mind and not having to look at my phone every 3 min because of activity of an analytic rule that was just triggered . I'd much rather have security system that's encrypted with home automation , video analytics and SVR all in 1 app . There pros and cons to everything .

With a smart smoke/CO detector you don’t have to look at your phone every 3 minutes, you just have to be aware when you get an alert. Then you call the fire department yourself and save yourself the monitoring fee (& false alarm fee). In the case of CO leaks the smart detectors even tell you when it’s safe to return to your home. But I’m all for whatever gives you peace of mind. In the end, it’s peace of mind that matters the most. So if that’s your preference, then stick with what’s right for you. George, I had a break in at my house, teen kids I believe, they stolen some things including 1700's flintlock rifles. Since then for the past six months have been reading, watching and thinking about a security system to do what I want it to do. I've watched your video a few times and conclude your advice is the best of all, I want to stop them before they get in. I also don't want to pay a monthly fee, and don't like at all all the DIY high tech, computer, wifi, smartphone and battery operated sensors today, all totally Micky Mouse. I'd like a basic hard wire system with motion detectors pointed close to the outsides of the house and then to an alarm, to stop before they get in. I'd have a key switch or code switch to turn the system on when I leave the house or going to sleep at night. Radio Shack used to sell a complete hard wire metal box system were a person could add sensors, motion, and an alarm, but they're now out of business. What do you recommend, I rather be proactive. What good are cameras alone if they get inside? Thank you

I think of burglar alarms as one layer of security. It certainly is not a great stand alone solution, but with a good camera system, a dog(s) that make noise when someone approaches, and a gun it is yet another layer of security. You never know when you may end up in a situation where a plan B solution (which is what the burglar alarm would be) will make a difference.
@GeorgeLangabeer

That’s a great thought process. This video was more for people that only have the budget for one or the other. In that case, I’d rather be proactive with cameras, than reactive with an alarm system. From one installer to another, and going through 2year alarm installer diploma course 23yrs ago. They taught us levels of protection from perimeter to interior. Even if your not protecting the perimeter of the yard, you can protect the perimeter of the house. Yes cameras are the first line of defence, then you need to do all doors and windows, glass breaks in highly accessible areas and motions for away and motions for stay/delay (garage/basement). I appreciate you, but I have to disagree. Yes, cameras are great, but it’s been proven they’re not an effective deterrent. Security systems have their shortcomings, but they don’t just secure your home from a burglar. You can incorporate flood sensors, temperature sensors, smoke detectors into your system. It’s asset protection. That’s why insurance companies will give you a discount on your home owner’s insurance if you have smoke detectors tied in with your security system. Here’s a tip I give to my customers, and it may make me a terrible security professional: the #1 best deterrent to burglary is a beware of dog sign, and a dog… the worst mistake you can make is post a ring or simply safe sign in your yard because you’ve basically given a potential burglar the operating frequency of all the devices in your home.

There are always exceptions, but after interviewing over 1000 thieves, this actually isn’t the case. As I have said in my videos, the one and only benefit to an alarm system, is the loud sound. But that loud sound only benefits you in the night (or whenever you sleep). Yes, it will wake you, while a phone notification from a camera will most likely not. But otherwise, the loud siren does nothing to protect you from a thief. Your average thief (taken from statistical data) could care less about the siren of an alarm system.

One of them used a golf club to smash a hole through the outside wall into a bed room. shortly after they saw the cameras with IR and they scattered. Within a few days me CCTV went from 8 to 12 cameras all recording 24/7. I have recently changed some camera positions and record functions. I'm planning on getting a PTZ camera with 2 way audio soon. I have had good comments from the local LEO and even had them contact me wanting any relative footage of other events occurring nearby. Once they wanted early morning (2:00am) footage looking up the road about 200m from my place. For me CCTV is an absolute must have. Having an alarm system will notify me if someone breaks in. It gives me peace of mind as I drifting off to sleep knowing that I will be awakened by an audible alarm if someone tries to break in. My security company is very good. I have accidentally tripped the alarm many times and they have always called before sending the police. Twice I wasn't as quick as I should have been only to meet the police at the door. I also have outdoor security camera's which I do believe serve as a deterrent. I think the two are a good combination. If either of those fail to convince a would be intruder from entering my home my German Shepard would happy to convince them otherwise. She doesn't like strangers, guest, friends, UPS, FedEx, sock puppets, or relatives. The only person she seems to approve of is the food delivery person. If all that fails might I suggest something big, bold for the evening; The Benelli M4.

Good video suggestion! First, I would buy an inexpensive door sensor/contact (look at the ones made by Eve) that would tell you when someone opens the door. Second, I would buy a WiFi camera (like the Nest Cam). One that has Person Recognition or Facial Recognition and two way audio. That way you get another notification from the camera when someone enters and can scare the person using the two way audio. There are also door sensors and cameras that will sound an alarm if triggered (or that has the feature where you can manually sound an alarm). Depending on your landlord, I would also inquire as to whether they would mind if you get a smart lock for your deadbolt.

The alarm systems can be connected to carbon monoxide detectors and smoke detectors and flood detectors... That alone is worth it. If you really care get a sprinkler system and an alarm system and cameras. That way if you have a fire the sprinklers will keep it under control or put it out the alarm makes sure the fire department is called. Your alarm can be set to unlock the doors for them. They can show up take care of what fire is left and cut the water so the whole house dosnt flood from the sprinklers. The loud noise they make can also alert neighbors if you have them if someone breaks in. Yeah it wont do much good for the addict looking to steal $100 worth of stuff for drug money. It will however stop someone from spending 15 min cutting open your gun safe or searching the whole house.

@@timnccu7 yeah, but what good is the alarm when the thief knows they can be in and out with all your stuff before the police leave the parking lot (responding to the alarm)?? At least the cameras will still give the police something to go off of...vehicle description, physical description of the thief (mask or not-height, build, tattoos, license plate, etc). In most cases the alarm system does nothing but make a loud sound that the thief could care less about. This is all information given to me by criminals I have detained and interviewed on the topic. Both methods can be a deterrent, but a camera system is going to help most in actually catching the thief. Just saying.

In the example you use of being on vacation...a camera with facial (and person) recognition and two way audio, you would get an alert (no matter where you are in The World) that there is someone approaching your house (mask or not), you’d be able to scare them away with the two way audio, all before they reach the house. With an alarm, too late, they are already in, in and out with your stuff, all before the police responded.

Most systems have transitioned to high quality video, cloud storage, etc. I wanted to own the equipment, not pay monthly for a contract. I also have concerns about privacy, and about the security company itself using or mishandling my video.I selected a system that put a lot of effort into advertising to say they protect privacy, the video is stored locally and encrypted, you can add cloud storage with heavy encryption, etc. Sounded perfect! But the small type in the terms of service said ... 'we have unlimited rights to use your data, including audio and video recordings, from this device or any future technology'. Normally I don't read those EULAs, but it freaked me out so much I sent the system back. I don’t agree with you. I am in IT and working partly with IT datacenter security. It’s all about layers. - Will a security guard help you find all intruders? No - Will Cameras solve all the problems? No - Will Biometrical access solve all issues? No - Will Standard alarm system solve all issues? No - Will the fence around solve all issues? No - Will the lights around the building and inside during the night solve all issues? No etc Then ask the question, if you put the systems together, will that scare the attacker off and choose something else ? If you apply this to your home. - Fence around your house, not solve all issues - Alarm system in your house, not solve all issues - Lights around the house, not solve all issues - Motion sensor lights, not solve all issues Again, the more layers you add to your security the better protected home you got. An alarm system is one layer, 1 more point for you, get as many layers as you can and the attacker will go to some other place.
@GeorgeLangabeer

Yeah, this video is for the average person, on an average budget. Of course layering is key, but this is for the person that can afford one solution. Yeah, but in your example…1. I can tell you from catching criminals for 25 years, the mask thing is very rare. 2. With an alarm system, the crook will be in & out with all your stuff before the police even leave the parking lot to respond. Plus, when the police get there, an alarm system gives them nothing to work with. Cameras do. Even if they are wearing masks, you still have: height, weight, tattoos, vehicle description, possible license plate, gender, race, etc…all while your alarm did nothing but make a loud sound & didn’t deter the thief in the slightest.

Cameras don’t do much i like to think of them as silent witness and the two way talk feature is great for scaring the burglar but you aren’t gonna be on guard 24/7 looking out for the notification you’re gonna be asleep what if you’re on a plane its the same thinking as I don’t need home security i have guns what you do need is perimeter alarm that detects the intruder on your property and sound the alarm not giving them time to steal your stuff and cameras to work hand in hand with home security, it about layers first is your perimeter alarms then it your hardening of window whether it be window films or longer screws and then the home alarm as a last resort kind of as a backup and i do agree cameras are very advanced and they have great features but they not gonna match the accuracy of an actual outdoor PIR perimeter system
@GeorgeLangabeer
@GeorgeLangabeer 2 года назад
After interviewing hundreds of thieves, they will all tell you a perimeter burglar alarm does not deter them at all. They know they will be in and out with your stuff, before the police even leave the parking lot. I agree with you that there is nothing wrong with layers, but if you talk to these criminals, cameras are 100% more of a deterrent. More criminals will move on to the next house when they see cameras, than some sign in the yard that says they have a burglar alarm. I’ve heard it straight from the source (countless times). Cameras also give the police evidence. A perimeter alarm gives them squat. But again, no harm in layering your security.

Actually there are alarm systems that can detect an attempted burglary. For example the German Eimsig Alarm System, it is patented and in combination with cameras the greatest deterrent.
