Thanks for your insight! Although basic but still very helpful. I only wishes to add one though t for wireless security camera is that wifi signal strength and speed should be strong enough to cater for 2k video that is transmitting as you don't want lag for your video that you are seeing.

I’ve been doing this for over 20 years & have installed NVRs for thousands of people & I’ve never had one stolen…BUT, if you’re really worried about, install the NVR somewhere a thief wouldn’t look. Like a laundry room, or a closet that has power (or add power to a closet). There are plenty of places you can install one if you get creative.

Thanks for another great video. It helps a lot. I’ve been going through a rabit hole trying to find the best security system for my needs. There’s maybe something else that I would add to the list: NVR security. I’ve read that isolating your NVR from the internet with firewall rules is really important to prevent hackers from getting inside your network. What are your thoughts about that? And are you doing something else to protect your system and network when installing these devices? Thanks again!

NVR security is very important. Nowadays there are a lot more options to maintain your camera system privacy. Alibi for example uses a Peer to Peer connection. So instead of your router & port forwarding like the old days (which is the least secure), your system is being hosted on a secure server with end to end encryption. The sole purpose of that method is to maintain your privacy.

This is another example of “you get what you pay for”. If you go for the cheaper entry level “big box” systems, your privacy is more at risk, because those companies barely have privacy on their road map. Yet another reason to always go professional grade.

hey you are very very informative on systems and i have tried so many systems what i want is a NVR with some pan cameras and some stable if possible but i want to see the cameras on my monitors that i have thru out my house .. also see off my phone and cost isn't an issue i have some cameras in the Philippines that work great but its just off my cell phone . so please direct me in the right direction for a system to be able to watch off a monitor and have wireless with a NVR.

Regarding a wired system. Is the wiring that comes with the kit sufficient or would you recommend upgrading? I ask because my uncle is a retired contractor and we both installed a system on my mom's house. He insisted going with a better quality Cat 5 wire. I'm just not sure if I want to spend that extra money.

Great video! I'm curious what you think I should buy if I want 4 cameras with great audio, event detection and 24/7 recording with the ability to scrub through the timeline on an app. Basically, I have the first gen Nest outdoor cam and love the audio and scrub features, but hate that it misses events and even people at my front door. I would ideally like to spend under $1500 for the system. I don't mind a subscription if it gives me what I want.

Is there some standby cameras too that they only start recording when detecting movement or even notify you when that happens i could guess that could be done with some smart home integration, because for me the individuals have been found roaming when theres dark out everybody would be usually asleep i can't really stay at watch at nights to wait for someone so could something like this be automated and could the light be used as a deterrence so 2 way audio for intimidation doesn't have tobe used since i have wood sheds next to house some without doors just for storing and drying the wood and no natural light getting there (moon light) anyways so id go for some camera with lighting. Idea was to add cameras to the 4 corners of the building but that would require the maximum moving angle of 90 degrees i dont know if theres even something like that for civillian use. So what could be my options i am electrician myself so cabling and installation is not going to be the problem but i have not dealt with security systems that much so i really don't have that much of an insight into brands.

Would like a 6 stationary hardwired self monitoring NVR home interior/ exterior system, I can have PIR trigger a recorder so I can go back and review an event on my own. Please advise on self recording systems that preferably has an on/off phone notification option. What are the recording options, on board SSD? How long of recording time would I get per terabyte SSD? Would prefer entry level processional grade so I'm not going to crazy with price. P.S. great video.

I was looking for more of a system, that has wifi and can be accessed both by portable monitor and app on my phone. Expandable so I can have a couple cameras on the inside but also a couple outside eg front parking lot and back of the house in my kids outdoor play area. Do you have any suggestions, I've tried camcamp but it was lacking and too quiet, and they didn't have an indoor out door cameras that would work with 1 portable monitor, casacam seem to do everything I wanted but the monotor had to be plugged in with an eithernet chord for remote viewing. Do you have any suggestions that I could look at for an indoor outdoor application? I like the baby monitor trye setup with a ptz indoor cam and all and they do have wifi for remote viewing but I haven't found one that expands to utilizing outdoor cameras. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

I've studied this for many days trying to decide what is best for me. Everything I learned is explained in your video. Great job. I wanted something easy for my parents to be able to view, they aren't so great with phone apps and stuff. I installed a Tapo camera because the app is about as simple as it gets. I'll install another camera and perhaps one indoors. I guess the only thing not mentioned in this video is some cameras can back-up the video on a memory card and or cloud storage. Or someTapo cameras use a hub that you can put a memory card in. Tapo also gives you a free 30 day cloud storage for every camera that you buy. And perhaps another topic is some cameras have AI features, such as people detection, animal detection, and others.

Unifi is one step above entry level cameras like Lorex and they are one level below professional grade cameras like Alibi. Definitely better than Lorex.

Overwhelming is absolutely true…..I need an outside solar WiFi Ptz camera for the driveway gate 120’ feet from my inside router that records to my own hard drive that can be monitored via iphone with no monthly fees that can have additional indoor cameras added later. I’m asking for the moon right 😂. I’ve found a few but they have spot lights or audible alarms, which I don’t want either to occur while I’m taking out the trash late at night.

I am going to buy a POE which should be a nightmare to install as I have an all cinderblock home with no attic and a detached all cinderblock garage with no attic as well. Since it will have to be connected to my router, everything will come into my living room.

Thanks! We are looking at a solar camera system, having 140ft across the front of our home, and 80ft to the dirt road from the front of the house, distance is our consideration. Local people watch our home, and have drained our fuel from our motor home, or brazen as they are, just kick or bust out the window. Sheriff office tells us do we have proof, yes we need cameras. Looking at the eufy system, but any help would be appreciated, thanks Charlie and Linda

In that type of situation, you’re going to need something more robust & reliable. I’d suggest a good wired Poe NVR system. WiFi cameras aren’t going to cut it.

@@GeorgeLangabeer Hello George, so we just got a call from our neighbor, this thief was on our property again. We have almost an acre, lots of Oak and Pine trees and need a system that this brazen person will not cut power to cover his tracks, as he did to our next door neighbor. We thought the Eufy was one choice, no wires to cut, but you mentioned Poe NVR. We currently do not have wifi, and again thought something like the Eufy might serve our needs, if this type of system does not need wifi, thanks in advance for your advise, again, thanks Charlie and Linda....

@@chazzei You can get coverage by setting up a small solar system on a pole and sending the camera back to your house via a Ubiquiti uplink. Wireless connection from the pole with the cameras to your home. Its a solid solution that we have been using for several years. It is however beyond most DIYers capabilities but it can get you video coverage almost anywhere you want it regardless of distance.

@@chazzei there may be someone in your area who can conduct the install for you though it will require a company with strong multi discipline experience ie solar, IT and Surveillance or you could farm out the separate projects to different companies. If you are handy and not fearful of trying it yourself there are several videos on Youtbe that will aid you. It is not a terribly complicated project however it would require some knowledge. Good Luck!!

Im not a fan of Wyze. There is “inexpensive” and there is “cheap”. Wyze leans a little too much on the “cheap” side for me. Wyze is an example of, “you get what you pay for’. Better than nothing, but not an ideal option…in my opinion.

They are very cheaply made, they have a very high fail rate, the night vision will fail after a couple years and they have horrible customer service/warranty support when you do have a problem.

Or the pic-in-ic basket yogi bears searching for waste bins or wile-e-coyotee looking for the epic road runner!…. That’s the main reason for cameras in this hood.

I will never recommend Dahua cameras because they are not NDAA compliant. Basically meaning they are prohibited by the U.S. Government.

Ubiquiti makes some decent stuff. They are right there with Reolink, being one step below professional grade. But they are way too proud of their stuff, as far as being too expensive for what they are. They also seem to always be out of stock, which is annoying.

Sir, I have a daughter that is off at college and her FIRST night there by herself, a dude pretending to be walking a dog while randomly trying to open doors was hard at it. In fact, he managed to get into an apartment. These are townhomes with three bedrooms upstairs and one downstairs (my kids is DOWNSTAIRS). Luckily, the girl upstairs hid, called 911 and they caught this dude. HOWEVER, my 20 yr old daughter is there for the summer, working two job and hasn’t slept a night since. She’s horrified!! I’m the single mom and will have to install “something” and I know there’s NO doorbell. There is a light fixture out on front porch but I don’t think any other electricity. So power to the camera is what I’m worried about number one. I guess what I’m asking if this was your daughter, what would you install? I know the complex allows cameras because I saw ring bells on many doors yet know for a fact, no doorbell, so how are they keeping these charged?

@@GeorgeLangabeer hi, thank you for responding. My 75 year old mom and I just moved her out of dorm into this luxury type apartment and now, THIS CRAP!! She’s four hours away from home (Auburn, AL) and quite honestly the neighborhood around the complex does look shady. Now I’ve got to not only find this security system but install it too. I’ve also got an extra .380 in my safe which she’s now open to finally carrying. She’s shot this piece before and many others but I’m going to spend a great deal of time with her teaching her all the safety and common sense needed to carry safely. The problem with this is on campus, she can’t have it on her. I want her to carry when she’s out eating, shopping, getting gas, etc. I’ve got a perfect holster so she can wear it on her (last place a woman needs her ppd is in handbag) and it also has a laser installed. She can also have it in bed with her when roommates are away. Didn’t mean to talk your head off. Your channel is great, you skip all the BS and fluff. Your viewers appreciate and as a single mom, I can’t thank you enough. We need all the help we can get. Take care!!

I have several Eufy cameras and they are aweful at best. They go offline for no reason, incredible amount of false motion alerts and have missed every actual event that i was hoping to capture. I would not recommend at all.

Security cameras are only good if bad actors can't snoop into your system. IMO, you need a zero-trust setup: #1 wired PoE. #2 cameras can be set up without internet access. #3 cameras can operate without internet access. #4 fully open-source NVR software that doesn't rely on any precompiled binaries. #5 fully open-source camera firmware. #6a managed network switch that isolates each camera to its own network switch port and won't work if the port is changed or a different camera is plugged into that port. #6b managed network switch that isolates the NVR from the internet (note that this will necessarily mean you can't use Alexa, etc. Actual security means limiting access to very specific applications and protecting against MitM attacks, even ones from a cloud vendor). #7 fully open-source mobile app that doesn't leak your login credentials to the cloud or your ISP. #8 if you want object tracking use NVR software that allows the use of a TPM. So far, I haven't found any selection of publicly available system components that satisfied every one of those requirements. If there is one, I'd like to know about it.
