To me. This is less a jazzmaster and more of a very good looking reverse firebird style guitar. Gorgeous. Certainly a contender for the p90s slot that I’m looking to buy.
I have a Baum Wingman Original and hand on heart can tell you they are such good guitars and hold themselves impressively amongst guitars twice the price
Love this newer series of Baum primarily because they changed the hideous headstock shape. Ive always been attracted to their body shapes but never pulled the trigger because of the headstock. Just my opinion but i know i can't be alone on that. Fantastic review as always thank you!!
I like the clarity of the neck pickup, even when fuzzed out, that is a sweet guitar, seems very versatile also! Deep Forrest looks nice, that Glacier blue is my fav
Great demo, thank you sir. Guitar sounds really good and the pickups do seem to blend nicely together in the middle position. The body shape is pretty cool too. Wouldn’t tear me away from my telecaster but it is an interesting guitar that sounds decent. I enjoyed the video as always. Keep up the good work. ✌🏻
I don’t need another guitar right now…I’m tempted to buy this though. If for no other reason, just to support the industry making more offsets. Especially offsets that don’t say fender.
That's a super cool guitar, I love the clean tones it sounded really good especially the neck pickup! With both pickups on it also sounded darn good too! Sounded good with some gain too! Nice review and cheers from the USA! Just subscribed!
I've one of the original teardrop wingman, and their new celestor on order. They are fantastic and beautiful to play. Everyone needs a Baum Guitar in their lives
I came *so close!* to picking up one of these at the local guitar pusher (they had it at like 15-20% off) - the only reason why I didn't was that after I'd played around with it for like 45 minutes in the shop, I went a few rounds on a Fender Player Meteora (yes, I have a thing for that shape apparently 😝) & that felt so much more natural for me to play... not that the Wingman was bad by any stretch of the imagination but that's what scuttled the impulse decision - so at least for me, the Wingman did not feel Fender'y enough 😁 (then, a few months later, I bought a Sterling Mariposa on impulse, but that's another story...)
I don't know, I think that color is pretty cool. I don't know if it's my favorite color ever, but it's nice. I'll have to look for that white and gold one.
I always enjoy guitars that have a contrasting tone between the neck and bridge pickups. That’s the secret to a killer middle-position tone IMO! This right here sounds amazing, but more importantly looks amazing! And a guitar’s looks are the real secret to awesome tone, as we all know. Side note: I always felt that JM style offset bodies look best with a T-style headstock. Looks more proportional, but what do I know!
Im a amp lover. I dont seek anything past a strat, they do all I need so I don't geek out over guitars, but I love this thing I don't understand why. That color has me by the heart strings
It's great to encounter some unique and exquisite guitars orientated in the fringes, yet represent superb value for money in their design and build. 👍🏻
Dear Sir I loved your thorough but fun review of this guitar. That thing is bad ass and classy AF in the same go! I was close to getting the Wingman Original, was going back and forth between Bigsby/Jabbmaster pickups or Stoptail/Minihumbuckers but I think those P90’s sound thee best for what I’m looking for! I’m a bit surprised that they sound so alive even though I see 250k pots listed on the website, as I expect 500k pots with P90s. But one can’t argue with that tone, I guess Baum know what they are doing! I mean they sound incredible. I’d pay extra for a roasted maple neck on the Vega, but oh well ya’cant have it all. I really dig the black headstock and dots on the Vegas also! I think I’m going for an Inca Gold one, mmmhmmm! Greatly enjoy your work. BTw you are the feller that got me to buy a Boss FZ1W, love that thing! Cheers!
From the first note I loved that guitar. I can tell it just has that thing where it invites you to play and it is enjoyable to do so. Great colour too. Shape....yeah, its a winner all round eh?
I'm a fan of that brit green on this model you're playing, I'd not throw any of the color selections away in this series. They did a good job with these colors!
Harder than it looks to make something new that still look timeless and classy, but Baum sure nails it. Getting serious craving from a lot of their models (the Carve looks amazing too)
I agree it's as a very, very, cool looking P90 Guitar, rather than a Jazzmaster alternative. It gives that distinctive P90 growl. It does not look like it has an Offset profile. The waist cutaways look symmetrical to me. Having said that the shape is brilliant. Very nice Guitar. Cheers Andy.
I tried one of these on a pilgrimage to Andertons about a year ago, it looked cool and sounded good but it did feel a bit rough when played alongside the Reverend Charger 290 (also offsety, 2 P90, stop tail) so I bought that instead.
I’ve got the Carve, which is quite similar apart from the body shape. It sounds and plays really good. However, I’d prefer a chunkier neck and smaller radius on a vintage styled guitar. Hope they do that in the future.
@TheGuitarGeek Cool review, however you didn't mention about the upper fret accessibility for higher notes...As this is a bolt on neck, how would you rate or you feel it compared to let say a fender strat ? Thx in advance
About the headstock geometry: I can see that Baum have kept the strings straight from bridge to , nut to tuner. To increase the space between tuners they would have to make the headstock longer, and it looks a bit big already, like a pretty girl with big ears.
The bridge on this looks like the roller bridge on the Gordon smith Gatsby.... that's a guitar you should review....UK made and lots of custom options..
To get it a bit closer to things you might use a Jazzmaster for, I'd add one of those really nice, but not too expensive or hard to install Duesenberg after-market trems that can go on a tune-o-matic bridge, which I think this might be?
I don’t need another guitar right now…I’m tempted to buy this though. If for no other reason, just to support the industry making more offsets. Especially offsets that don’t say fender. Already have a Revstar with 2 p90’s. Would consider this in a different configuration.
I have not heard Jazzmaster pickups described as "P90" pickups, but I suppose that they are the same thing. The Fender Jazzmaster pickups, although on the surface look like they might be dual-coil humbuckers, are indeed single coil, just wound in a wider and flatter manner than the single coils that they make for a strat or tele.
Hi, this guitar is definitely on my buy list, can you tell me a little bit more about possible neck dive while playing sit down. Thanks for the helping review.
When i got my Jazzmaster w/Bigsby, i thought i had arrived to Fender surf euphoria. ‘Turned out it was the most un Fender sounding guitar of any Fender, or even knock off Fender i ever had and never warmed up to it. It helped me to obtain my Acoustisonic though.
I'm not hearing anything like a Jazzmaster--maybe more like an SG or Yamaha with P-90s and a tune-a-matic (so not a Special). But it sounds great and looks killer. I love the arm bevel on the lower bout, too.
I really like the Wingman's sound, it's offset design and tuner features, but it's no Jazzmaster. I've got a 2006 Fender MIJ '66 and it's got an entirely different sound. Again, Baum's got a very cool guitar, and it sounds great, but if you want that Jazzmaster sound, then you need a Fender Jazzmaster.
Agreed. Offset body shape and bolt-on maple neck are the only things remotely Jazzmaster about it. Body wood, scale length, pickups, switch location, and bridge are all basically LP Special.
Looks interesting, but just got a G&L tribute doheny B stock. Good deal when they have them, but only ship to lower 48 states of USA. Still getting used to the passive treble-bass system.
Gets some nice tones. I wonder if they make different versions of pickups with similar covers as these are a bit muddy in spots where other times I have seen w Wingman seemed to have more depth and clarity. Cool looking they make a WM bass that sounds pretty badass too
Looks nice, sounds nice. Can’t go wrong with P90’s. Also looks like good build quality. Definitely one to keep on my radar. Ouch! Okay. I just had a look at the price and my Squier version seems to be good enough…
I never got why people consider guitars with no trem as an alternative to a jazzmaster. Just for the looks? On the other hand there's all these jazzmaster owners who never touch their trem, so fair enough I guess?
Looks cool but, those knobs looks cramped. I personally am constantly fiddling around with my tone and volume, so this would maybe be a reservation of mine with this particular guitar.
Hello @TheGuitarGeek, I´m living in Denmark and I´m between this Wingman Vega and a Fender Player Plus Telecaster. I know they are absolutely different guitars but for 1000 euros which one would you say stands out better?
I like it! But i think i prefer the Alternate Reality Fender Meteora. Almost same shape, it has the belly carve. I own one and it's my favourite guitar. I really think Fender should have the Meteora as their standard "p90 guitar" or "filtertron guitar". The player plus two point trem... meh Baums are cool!
@2:98 I would MUCH rather have a master tone and two volumes. Were I to own one, I would fix that pronto. Easy example, as I do on Les Pauls, etc., rhythm vol on the neck, lead volume on the bridge, or vice-versa, and just hit the 3-way. Also better for mixing neck and bridge. Curious choice IMO.
