Why are you throwing heavy 4K video editing at the 15" MB Air? It's not meant for that. Stick to the Pro. The Air lineup is meant for the average user performing average tasks. It's not a creator machine.

Actually if you look at ijustine’s review of the MacBook Air 15, she actually does 4 to 8k video editing with photo editing on the Air it does handle it really well, especially with the new M2 chip, this laptop is actually pretty insane which is why I decided to get the M2 Air 15 with 24GB RAM and base storage

Great insights Mark.. I myself ordered a base 15 Air which provides a rock solid value. It would be great general computing device in the family with occasional video/photo edits whenever ever needed. I also worked with 8GB Ram with 13 inches m1 and m2 air, it served well indeed.

I did the same and then took it back the next day. It was swapping to SSD and really struggling with just Brave browser open. Bought the 14" M2 macbook pro - much better. Namaste x

This is the best size Apple laptop for the price imo, I picked up the 24gb ram and 1 tb SSD. Super happy with the upgrade from the M1 Air. I also got the education discount + $150 gift card that Apple provided

I think MBA 15" 24GB 1T would be fine for Full-Stack Web Development (Docker + PHPStorm + Xcode + other tools), the perfect successor for my MBP 13" mid-2013 (i5, SSD, and 16GB)

I just bought an open box base model MBP 16" M1 for $1,500 in near new condition. That thing runs circles around the air 15" with 16gb ram. Comparable price and Ram/SSD. Performance is so much of a difference gap. I highly recommend getting an open box MBP 16" M1 over the air 15" 💯

@Mark Linsangan There's nothing wrong with the base model 15-inch Air for most internet surfing users. It will hold its price if people want to sell it and upgrade to what's much better technology in 3 years, adding extra ram and SSD internal upgrades means people will not more money on the second-hand market, so frankly advising people to upgrade is wrong from a second-hand future market perspective, again for most of the population that are NOT tech users, Gamers or RU-vidrs, the base model is satisfactory. Don't fall into the Apple marketing honey money trap.

What if I am new to apple and I never owned an apple computer like laptops and desktop should i not buy one? This is me coming from window laptop that uses acer laptop. I notice that most of the battery life is poor compare to apple idk if that true for all other windows laptop since I only had an acer laptop. Mine only lasted for like 3-4 hours of mid to heavy use and I got it in 2013. I wanted something I can bring around and be mobile with. The desktop I build is to heavy to keep moving around so yeah. Edit: the one i was aiming for was the 512gb with 8gb. is it possible if I was to get one to upgrade the memory down the road or is it stuck to the mobo? and same with the SSD storage? and is the memory DDR4 and is it 3200 mhz or higher? I forgot to add that I won't be editing videos or doing what your doing. Just using MS excel, word, browning webs, youtube, playing with garage band, netflix for movies and shows and amazon prime video. If doing all that stuff will the battery last me 10 hours or more or apple lied? Also what is the promotion hz for the air 15 or refresh rate? the computer I am using is 144 hz.

So Im not a youtuber but I do care about performace. I have an asus zeenbook 15' (I LOOOOOVE 15 INCH PCs) with i7 8th gen /16 RAM/ and 500gb. However, I'm looking for something lighter and I want to try apple pcs. I'm an iphone user but have never tried MacBooks. I do want to be able to use the MBA to edit videos and render. Don't care THAT MUCH about battery as my current pc doesn't do that well (in terms of battery) when playing games or editing. Would you recommend the MBA with 16 ram or with 512 gb? My budget is 1500 so its one or the other. Loved your video!

I am stuck in between the 15 MBA with 16 GB memory and 512 GB of storage vs the base M2 14 MBP. I plan on keeping this computer for more than 6 years to be my main desktop and laptop. My current base 2019 MBP with an intel i5 and 2 thunderblot ports had the pinwheel of death a few times already when I am doing multitasking and having it connect to a monitor. I am able to get the educational discount but now when specing up the 15" MBA to 16 GB Memory and 512 GB Storage, it is close to the base 14" M2 MBP in price. With my current workload I am already using ~7 GB of memory and 4.5 GB swap which makes my fan spin like crazy. I am going to have to bring my computer to campus and to clinical rotations as well so what would you recommend?

So... it seems like you're worried about performance. The M2 (15" MBA) is gonna be 3x-5x faster than your Intel i5 MBP currently. If you're going with the 14 MBP with M2 Pro, that'll be 6x-10x faster than your current MBP. The weight difference between the 15" MBA isn't that far off from the 14" MBP. Go with the M2 Pro 14" MBP with 16GB / 512GB SSD. I recommend going refurbished if it's available via Apple Store. It's the same price, if not, cheaper than your custom spec 15" MBA you're looking at.

I initially placed my order for a 15 inch MacBook Air with 16Ram and one terabyte SSD…. But then I realize I can just get a 14 inch MacBook Pro with 16Ram and 512 GB SSD…. So I’m thinking going pro since it’ll be my main computer. But I wasn’t sure if the 14 inch screen will be big enough, so I’m considering the 16 inch pro mainly for the screen real estate. I just wasn’t sure if it would be too big or heavy. I’ll mostly use it in my bedroom on the desk or in bed watching a movie. What would you suggest? 14 inch pro and get a nice external 4K monitor or ball out on 16 pro since I won’t connect it to an external monitor as frequently?

@@vladcode 14” Pro is an amazing middle ground. Has similar power and ports as the 16” and portability of 15” Air. You won’t make a mistake with that M2 Pro 14”

...in the UK, refurbs are few and far between, so you may have to wait for the one you want, but £320 off the base M2 MB Pro 14 is not a great deal due to Amazon discounts that can get close to that on new ones.

If you are like me and just want a laptop with good screen, good speakers and great battery for media consumption, browsing and Microsoft office, just get the basic model and it will last you 5+ years with no problems, if you need more space just get an external ssd

Wow I can’t believe you said at 2TB the MacBook Air doesn’t meet your requirements. And with a $20 dongle off amazon, every port you could ever need is right there. When I saw how much you splurged on the 14” Mb Pro I began to understand your bias/stubbornness. I can’t believe you splurged so hard on a 14” Mb Pro, you opted for a 4TB hard drive, that’s an extra $1,350 upgrade by itself!! That’s over a $5K computer. Wow… I can’t believe for that amount that you didn’t choose the 16” Mb Pro. No wonder you’re so biased, it’s because you’re soo heavily invested into your 14” Mb Pro. 🤦‍♂️

Up the storage to 1TB minimum if you’re planning to edit 4K videos. 8GB RAM is fine, but if you want to do more complex editing get 16GB RAM. Otherwise, look into refurbished or used 14” M1 Pro or M2 Pro MacBook Pros.

Great review! It’s refreshing to not just be subjected to the same 6 benchmark tests over and over and over again, like they mean anything to anyone but total geeks. For my part, I moved from an M1 air to the 15” air and I’m very, very happy with it. The MBP is just *way* too much machine for me that I’ll literally never use. I don’t care about “blacker blacks” or benchmarks. That screen real estate + the thin, light design is just spot on for what I need.

@@shawnwsl It entirely depends on what you are going to be doing with your laptop. I have used base models of the M1 and M2 Air and they worked perfectly fine for my use case (document creation, podcasting, making clips in iMovie, streaming) with no issues. The slow SSDs are only really a factor if you are moving massive files around constantly. If you are dead set on upgrading something, choose the RAM.

@@shawnwsl Mac OS handles the memory swapping very well. Unless you are doing heavy photo/video editing every day I would say you are fine to get the base model. But if you can swing the RAM upgrade, of course do that. I would not upgrade both the RAM and storage though because at that point you may as well get a refurbished 14-inch MacBook Pro. As for the SSD "dying", this would take years of moving huge files to see deterioration. I feel the RU-vid community has overblown this issue.

Those 24fps just aint it chief. It does unfortunately make your video practically unwatchable. I can understand some people omitting 60 because they don't have enough storage but you gotta at least pump it up to 30. It's just a laggy mess. Really unfortunate.

I would if you got the Midnight or Space Gray color. Shows allot of smudges, finger prints, and can easily scratch. I got the 13.6 inch Air in Silver color, so didn't need a case. Get a good sleeve or a crossbody laptop briefcase.

I have an mba 15" 16g 512ssd yes it's fast but it has a poor camera quality, and I can't connect to Bluetooth when using the iPhone using another account id, iMovie only gives 720p to export files. I feel disappointed. I'm going to send this back

How is that clickbait? Why would someone want 256GB on a laptop?? Sure RAM, you can pass by with 8GB but 256GB? Nah!

@@HeyMarkL I've been using my 128GB Macbook Pro for 4 years just fine. In fact I have 60GB available to use. If it's 256GB, that's more than enough for me. And I speak for majority of users. You're so into your "everyone's a photographer, videomaker, youtuber" world that you can't speak for majority of people. If you're any creator of any worth, I know you're not using Macbook Air for ANY kind editing (maybe some creators on low budget). Moment you start talking about any video editing/photo editing for pro photographers on freaking Macbook Air, you've gone off the rails mate. That's why this video is such a clickbait because you're advising not to buy this because they can't edit 4K videos. It's like saying don't buy a Toyota Camry because you can't go offroad. I'm pretty embarrassed for you man. Goodluck though. You're videos are nice to watch but this was nonsense.

I personally don't see a need for the 14" MacBook Pro. If you truly need the extra power you might as well get the 16" MacBook Pro with the M1 Max chip. Then you get the big screen, the big heatsink, and up to 96GB of unified memory. If you don't that much power (few actually do) then a 15" MacBook Air is the way to go.

@@rbasi25 I take you want those ports on the PrO for a reason. External monitor (which you will want more with the 14"), external storage, etc is going to cost $$$. If you are business professional getting an expensed machine, It probably makes sense to go for the MaX. If its a vanity purchase which I'm guilty all the time, we'll rationalize paying a little more for the bragging rights of having a PRO machine with extra power we'll never use.

what about the fact the 14" will last quite a few more years that the base 15" - because its performance will future proof it.

Amazon already has $100 off, and you do not need to be a student. It is a buyer's market due to the economic slowdown, so if the base is fine then the best deal is the base model discounted. If, like me, you use your Air for simple tasks without video editing or anything fancy, just office, media, social media, etc., then the base model is the way to go for value for money. Which, to be honest, is what a fanless MB Air was targeting. So this big deal about comparing with similar spec Pro models differs from the core market of students, small businesses, families, etc. My take would be, for casual users in for a long-term investment, buy the base and enjoy a tremendous 15-inch laptop. For those with a more intensive workflow, even though the Airs are remarkable in that context, the Pro range is where you should start.

I mean if budget really is a big factor and all they do is simple tasks without video or photo editing then I would point them towards the M1 Air. If they have that extra cash though, 15” Air I suppose. But it’s so hard to recommend without thinking long term (SSD biggest factor)

Good advice there, Mark.. Agree with your recommendation to spec it up from the base model if wanna keep for more than 3 years.. How many years would a MBPro, say the 16 inch last? 10 years?

Thanks so much! I'm on the 14" M1 Max MBP and I see myself keeping this laptop for another 3 years and I've had this since 2020. So I'd say 6-10 years easily if you're not an avid tech enthusiast like me.

The answer depends on your workflow. To me my storage requirements are low so it was an easy decision to upgrade the RAM to 16 GB. Remember you can supplement your storage with external flash drives but you can do nothing if you run out of RAM. FWIW, I bought 15" MBA ASAFP and am very happy.

Something is wrong the keyboard on this is weirded it’s not the same as m2 air 13inch or even m1 air and not even comparable to MacBook pro’s keyboard it’s totally different and not good actually I bought it online thinking it would be same but it’s not it’s quite different and I will say way worse than any MacBook keyboard I have ever used. M2 air has the same thickness why couldn’t they fit the same keyboard.

The base model is just not enough for most people who want to keep the laptop for a extended period of time. I’m sure that the Back to School deals will kick in soon, so get a college student to give you their account to utilize the deals and you get a free gift card, which you could use it or give it away.

I agree with your video title, but not your reason. There is a much better reson to stay away from the 15" MackBook Air. At least for now! The M3 is expected to be just around the corner. Maybe as soon as October 2023. Why would anyone buy an M2 MacBook Air now, when an M3 version may arrive in just a couple of months. What was apple thinking, and what are they planing to do? Will they update the 15" when the M3 is released? This will make the M2 15" the shortest lived Mac in history! It will surely cause massive backlash from all the customers that will feel deceived by Apple. Will they sell a faster and cheaper M3 13", in parallel with a slower and more expensive M2 15"? This will definitely case massive confusion for Apples customers! My advice to anyone who thinks about buying on of these is, stay frosty. Wait a couple of months, and see how Apple handles this. That's what I will do. It may be a success, but could just as well be Apples buggest failure since the Trashcan! An M3 15" MacBook Air will be a guaranteed success!

I wouldn't count on Apple putting an M3 in either Air in 2023. My guess is the MBP 14/16 get M3 this year and the Air gets it in 2024.

@@MadMaxx.1977 Why? Apple has always released the basic version of their Apple Silicon in the Air models. Do you expect them to release the M3 Pro BEFORE the regular M3. Or pehaps ypu think that they will start putting the regular M3 processors in the MacBook Pros. That is extremely unlikely! However, maybe the The MacBook Airs will get M3 Pro processors in 2024. Yet another reason to wait, isn't it?

@@svenisaksson3970Unless I'm mistaken, Apple never releases a new product with a current CPU then upgrades it to the next level CPU just a few months later in the same calendar year. They'd sabotage sales of the current model as people simply waited for the upgraded one.

Apple didn't become the world's most valuable company by making stupid decisions. They'll make a fortune selling M2 15" Airs this year and even more when they upgrade the Air to M3 in 2024.
