I hope that his video helps you decide on 4Runner vs Tacoma. I wanted to make this video after I had a Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro in lunar rock for about a week as a press vehicle. I've wanted to make this video for a long time, but had never spent enough time inside of a Tacoma, to truly and fairly compare it to my 4Runner. Here are my 5 things to consider when you are shopping for a Tacoma or a 4Runner.
I get this question all of the time and I divided this video into 5 separate points that I feel you really should consider.

I just with wish the 4 runner also had manual transmission option too, that would have made me think about it. But now I have tacoma with a manual. It took some time to find it but I got lucky to find one and it’s peppy and really fun to drive compare to automatic

@alain173 3 года назад
Great Video. Agreed with everything you reviewed. One thing I would like to touch upon is towing. I had to trade my new 17 Tacoma TRD Sport because it was absolutely horrible towing my 4K pound camper. Could not maintain highway speeds without constantly downshifting/up shifting/downshifting...I couldn’t believe how terrible of a tow rig it was. I even tried placing transmission in 4 sport but at highway speeds I was nearly at 4K rpm. I was very disappointed. And I live in flat Illinois. Traded it in on a used 17 limited 4 runner, night and day difference. 4Runner pulls my trailer no problem at highway speeds. Yes it occasionally downshifts, but not nearly as much as the Tacoma did. Couldn’t be happier with my 4Runner. I hope Toyota can figure out Tacoma’s transmission programming because besides the towing, I loved the Tacoma.

I’ve spent the last year and some months saving for a new vehicle . At first I took to Facebook marketplace to look at old Chevy s10’s & old Ford rangers. Then I looked more into reliability. Which led me to looking into Toyota’s. I also work with vehicles, so I’ve seen that Toyota’s have truly been one of the vehicles I see with much less problems . I went back and forth between Tacoma’s and 4runners from 2000-2008 . All this time later I’ve got a 2018 Tacoma . Although, I don’t think I would’ve minded if I had found a 4Runner with a better price

I'm 5ft 11 also and I hit my knees on the bottom of the steering wheel when I get in, also had to duck to get into it. The 4Runner/Tacoma's are better if you are under 5f 10" tall. I couldn't get used to the 4Runner's cramped space, so I sold it. The Tacoma was about the same amount of space as the 4Runner. The 3.5L in the Tacoma is peppy. One of my friends expected I'd want a 4runner since I previously owned small sedans, Subarus and a Jeep Liberty. But i picked the Tacoma. I wanted a bed to put in mountain bikes, camping gear and coolers plus I tow a pop up. I did get a Double cab even though I'm a single guy. I know the back seat isn't the most roomy but it's better than the jump seats in the access cab for extra occasional passangers and gives me a little more inside space to lock things in.

I've continued driving it but was unable to use it for "truck things", and now the frame has completely rusted in half at 138,000 miles. I'm shopping for a 2008-ish 4Runner with little frame corrosion. I'm going to cold pressure wash the undercarriage, let it dry for a few days, then apply Fluid Film, including inside the frame, and reapply it annually.

Vehicles assembled in Japan are very rare thing in the U.S.A...I think it does make a difference in respect to longevity. With that, I have to go 4Runner. I also like the engine and interior better. But there are several times this year when I definitely could've used a truck bed and my 4Runner wouldn't quite have enough space. I will say that I'm a little disappointed in the softness of the paint and the interior plastics used on the 5th Gens. My 4th Gen was better in regards to that.

FYI the "proper" distance from the steering wheel is having your wrist rest on the top of the steering wheel. You are nowhere near that, and your arms are straight in the 4runner when you held the 3 and 9. So if you move your seat forward in the Tacoma, you can sit in the back with a lot more knee space. But Tacoma is the only option for me, manual transmission.

I found the Tacoma seating felt more cramped, especially in the back, but a truck bed is nice, but over all I went with the 4Runner, and I have no kids.

I looked at both and it came down to, can the kids be comfortable in the back. The 4Runner won.

This is just me but ideally I'd have a Tacoma with the 4runner drivetrain and a cab that is a foot longer, with a 5 ft bed. Would equal the length of the 6ft bed taco now.

My mom has a 5th gen 4Runner and I have a 3rd gen Tacoma. With driving both of them, I feel that the Tacoma has a little bit better feel for the driver than the 4Runner does. For me, it is just a little bit more comfortable driving my Tacoma. And it seems like (I havent actually measured them) the Tacoma has a slightly taller windshield, so you can see out a little bit more.

The Tacoma was a slight bit better to drive too imo. Just a bit more modern I guess is the best way to put it.

The 3.5 tacoma and transmission shift weird with no low end torque. The 4runner drives better.

The 4Runner has a better ride because it uses coil springs. The Tacoma needs leaf springs for hauling & towing.

I owned a 4Runner TRD off-road Premium for 6 months that I just sold, and recently test drove a Tacoma and they seemed to ride about the same to me. The Tacoma was peppier with a 3.5 than the 4.0 in the 4Runner.

I have both current models & for my applications I say the Tacoma with a slight edge. More useful mods IMO, better MPGs (not that i care), more HP & torque with OV Tune (no tune for the 4Runner), i can throw wet surf gear or anything wet in the back of the Tacoma without worry or cleaning up (I actually use the bed). Don't get me wrong I really like the 4Runner. But I'd give the Tacoma a slight edge. Waiting for the new Tundra to see what Toyota brings to the table 🤙🏼

Solid review. I had to trade in my 19 4x4 Taco for a TRD 4R for mainly two reasons. Cab size and powertrain. Try taking the Taco on 3 plus hours trip with cruise control on and I am talking flat to semi flat HWY. It will rev up like crazy every time it hunts for gears. The seating position is horrible after a couple of hours trips other than that it's a great truck. Love my 4R !

4r is an awesome rig for sure!!! Agreed though, cruise control with the taco isn’t the best

Yep any kind of wind and my Tacoma will stay in 5th and won’t shift into 6th. I can’t stand it . And I’m on Houston roads. I’ve been in 2 different 5th gen 4 runners and the powertrain just feels better even with 1 less gear in the transmission and more comfy. Waiting on my trd pro to be delivered so I can trade in!

Been on 6hour trips and my 3rd gen Tacoma does just fine. 4runners also hunt for gears. Let’s just face it both vehicles are not the BEST highway cruisers

On a hilly highway cruise 70mph, 4runner frequently downshift to even 3rd gear and 5000rpm. Low torque output at low rpm is really an issue.

I remember going to the dealer to check out the new Tacoma. My first test was positioning the driver front seat where I would normally drive. I got out and sat in the backseat. That was the deal breaker for me. It was tiny. I looked across the showroom and saw the 4Runner. Same test, ordered on the spot.

I was in the market for. Rav4 xse hybrid now looking at the Rav4 Trd offroad but everyone says that suv is a soccer mom car I really like the rav especially saves in gas but now looking at the 4 runner and Tacoma I would like to do a little bit of off road nothing crazy and overlanding. What year is your Tacoma and 4Runner. I’m just getting into this off road and overlanding but I’m not going to go crazy off road I have to use it for everyday how much do these both boat to fill up ?
