Bought a used gaming Z 2060. Dude seemed chill in person, then I took the card home. Checked the offer up app and noticed his account was then deactivated. (Not a good sign) so I proceeded to bench the card, immediately spiking to 75C under load and the fans cranking to 100%. Turned it off, the card was never opened, but well past warranty. So I popped the cooler off and discovered the thermal compound had literally withered and was hardly making contact with the die to the plate. So I swapped out the thermal pads and dropped some thermal grizzly on the die. Dropped her down to 60-65C under load. Dude thought he sold me a dud, but a little know how fixed her and she’s living her best life in my friends first ever gaming PC.
Usually i troll them when they try to sell used cards on local sites.😄 The funny thing is that the miners here in Sweden still think a 3080 is worth a 1000$ or more.
I don't buy from miners anymore because I bought a bad card locally off Craigslist years ago after the previous mining boom and lost $150, which was a lot for me at the time. If I buy anyting expensive used anymore, I have to see it work in person first.
While this may be valid and true for this specific case, the sample size is 1. There are way too many variables to generalize "mining" vs "gaming". It's pretty much a card by card basis. You could more generalize by the end user/seller via care taken, but even that can't tell the whole story. Your advice on testing and validating is definitely great advice. It looks like Marvin was a good deal.
Yep, he's lucky that Marvin was well taken care of. I doubt most mining cards are like this. Mining stresses the memory so yeah there's a 50-50 chance that's it'll die within a couple of years. If its cheap and you have appetite for risk go for it. My rule of thumb is a used mining card should be at least 50% of msrp for me to consider it.
@@MrAkaacer but the wear and tear from gaming, more often turning systems on and off, over locking, heat expansion and cooling contraction from traditional PC use can also be just as bad or worse. Haven't you seen the way some people do little to no maintenance on their systems? It's actually more likely that a miner takes care of their investment than a kid who eats Doritos while drinking Mt. Dew and pissing into a bottle under their desk... You are taking a gamble no matter what. Which is why you mitigate risk by using a service which has some sort of buyer protection and acceptable refund/return policy. And immediately upon receiving the card test it and benchmark it to ensure it validates.
I've bought a lot of GPUs over the years that were mined on then I mined on them some more then I built some gaming computers. Along the way I've had quite a few dead R9 290 and RX 480. Mining does wear them out but generally you can tell if the seller is a miner and miners sell them cheaper. If the price is right then you may as well buy the mining GPU.

I've bought about 10 gpus the last 2 years, multiple used for mining. Majority fine. 1 was sold broken, which was said in the ad, but it was worse than advertised. One simply missed thermal pads and a part of 1 fan was broken (would obv. be seen if I had bought in person). Another one's memory broke after a month of usage, which was the worst of all. Other than that, the rest have been fine. Basically $200-400 cheaper than equivalent from stores. For me, worth it
Yeah I'm sure I bought a card that was mined on, but it was fine. It just wasn't recently. It was quite some time ago. As with everything it's hit or miss.
A friend of mine had about 20 3080/3090’s that he used for mining. I asked him about making them durable for long term use. He says he ran them for best profitability, which wasn’t overclocked, but that the memory was very hot on every card. I asked him if he’d do something about it. He said no, because he wasn’t planning to own them long. He asked me later if I wanted to buy one, which I declined of course. I’ve never mined, but hot memory is a problem, especially if it takes the controller with it. For that reason, I buy new or very cheap without hbm or gddr6x. Too much money for me to take such a risk on.
Still. If you buy it (at a eassonable price) and it works, and numbers run okay, all you have to do is re-pad it yourself and you have a long term card in your hands.
@@alejandrocalori6298 not necessarily, since degradation is cumulative. Sure, there’s sudden catastrophic failure, but there’s also gradual damage. The longer they run like that, the less life it has in general, but also it’s more likely to have a lower maximum clock and could require more voltage for the same clocks as new. Even buildzoid and derbauer have said that prolonged 90c causes significant damage or even failure in both hbm and gddr6x in as little as a few months. Imagine 9-12 months of hot memory on a card that will be outdone in six months, and paying even $700 for a 3090 for example. If it lives a long life, not a bad deal, but not great. If it dies within 3 years, it’s a terrible purchase in my opinion.

If you go 105c, then suddenly close the game, fans will drop as core lowers, and those memories have to cool themselves. I'm not sure which one is worse, having a constant 82-90c for months, or having the memory jumping from 105 to 30 to 105 to 30, to completely off.
@@alejandrocalori6298 that’s why buildzoid made a video. The spec for the memory is found not to be safe for the memory. Although temperature fluctuations can be bad for gpu cores and memory over time, 90 is the point of degradation and eventual failure for gddr6x and hbm. Additionally, many of the 3090 and 3080 variants have improperly sized or even cheap thermal pads, and so some of them have memory that exceed the max temperature spec. I don’t imagine many miners are/were concerned about making sure the next person has a healthy gpu, and I don’t think the current 2nd hand prices are worth the savings when next gen is around the corner. Lastly, the memory doesn’t have to cool itself. If the core is no longer producing high heat, the fans will calm, but the memory should still transfer the heat to the cooler and backplate if the card is designed well. They’ll also stop producing much heat if the game is closed, so that transfer should go on unimpeded. What would cause a problem would be very low core temps during very high memory usage, since the fans would hardly cool anything while the memory is working hard, which is what happens with mining. I have cards as old as an r9 290, which haven’t died due to regular fluctuations, which is of course anecdotal, but they haven’t had a single failure even though I run them at/near max daily. Though none of them ever exceed 75c on memory, they do heat cycle every day. They’re also all overclocked. I don’t feel worried about fluctuations considering what I’ve experienced, but that is of course just my experience. Considering two enthusiast channels have mentioned the issue with the 3080 and 3090 variants, I’d be more worried about what they mentioned. I only argue because you said that replacing the pads would make them long term cards, when replacing the pads can’t undue cumulative damage that may have already occurred.
i feel like buying a gpu from a miner compared to a gamer is a better idea in most cases. most miners would replace the pads to get the best temps possible on the vram. most gamers. dont. thus the memory wil sit at like 100+ c
@@muhaY-vb5vp You don´t have problems with that as long it´s not maxed out, i have a 3090 that always sit around 47-55º core degrees and always less than 95º in memory, between 260-275w. Other people hit 60º and 100º maxing out the hashrate at 300w+. Is a Zotac and the only problem i had is one fan because a hair got stuck in the fan shaft, anyway is deshrouded with 120mm fans now, less noisy. buyed new at launch, gaming card + IA training, then mining (little more than a year non stop) and still performs the same in the core overclock, thermal pads and thermal paste changed of course, after that you can run higher memory overclock in games.

Running at a stable temperature and power draw 24/7 will have damn near 0 cycling compared to gaming where your temps are constantly changing. Not to mention that miners undervolt and underclock. The fact is, mining cards are safer buys than non mining cards. With some notable exceptions such as the 3090, some 3080/12GB/ti models, and basically any HBM card
Great info, but as a buyer we have no way of knowing if a card has been mined b4 purchase, except the sellers word. And people word isn't worth a damn thing anymore.
I have no issues purchasing a used GPU, regardless if it was mined on or not, PROVIDED the previous owner was responsible regarding temps. As long as the memory temps were around 80c or lower on the memory during its run, the GPU should be fine.
I got messed over with a GPU after the previous mining craze, an R9 280x. The memory modules were toast, and the card could never be recognized to receive a driver, though I could get it working for a few minutes occasionally before it started pixellating badly and having part of the screen turn green, etc... I've bought only a cheap 1060 3gb card used since then and won't buy anything more expensive without seeing it run on a system first.
for large scale mining operations (hundreds of cards) RX 4xx and 5xx series are workhorses, 6 years working non stop at 70-80 degrees, 99% of capacity, around 3% failure rate after around 4 years, providing you change fans as soon as they start failing and change thermal paste and pads every two years or so, general cleaning and checkup every 6 months, gtx1060s are the most durable of the 10 series, at around 1% failure rate after 5 years, 1070 and 1080s have a much higher failure rates, the newer ones i dont have much experience since the people i know never upgraded (they are still mining with the same cards since 2016-2017) only a few of the newer AMD and NVIDIA cards here and there, newer cards are to hot for the climate of my country, 3090s would die in less than three months
@@enriquedossantos3283 the old rx 400 and 500s are durable like hell my 570 nitro + his only known pure abuse since the day it came out the box even after all of that I clock it up to 1550mhz and 2000 on the memory it pulls 250w and it still stays at 65C with no stability issues
Any miner worth his salt could tell you that by lowering the core clocks on the gpu by a lot like -500 to maintain stability while you lower the voltage as low as possible, you will achieve higher hash rates because the lower temperatures resulting from minimal voltage allow the card to operate much more efficiently than the much more intense workload involved in only using the card for gaming.
@@Maax1200 mining is a piece of software tailored to use the GPUs processing power. Games are the exact same except the Game publishers aren't paying you to play them.
The artifacting cards are jems they 9 times out of 10 its a faulty memory channel and replacing the chip will get it up and running like new as long as you have the skills and equipment you can diagnose and replace the chip in less then 2 house
I bought 2 1080ti's with a friend of mine from a closing down mine in about 2018. This was in the last Crypto selloff (Before this one LMAO). Anyway, we managed to pick up 2 "mined" 1080ti's from a new mine which immediately shut down and sold all its stuff after the first big fall (Bet they feel dumb about that). Anyway we picked up 2 1080ti's for $300 each when they were worth $1200 per card on MSRP. I can confirm the fans were damn loud, they had heating issues. But - We're still using them! Why? Because they're still some of the best cards on the market, and crucially the performance of the cards was - as expected - as if we bought them new. I encourage you to buy mined GPU's from people who have obviously looked after them. Ours were given to us in their original boxes they were so new, without a scratch on them, and completely unmodded. How did we solve the heating? We slapped on a couple of beautiful water coolers for about $60 each, and the cards instead of running at 80 under load, now run at 50. Incredible. The right deal is out there.
I bought a used 3090 from FB marketplace for 1150gbp about 3-5 months ago. It was definitely mined on but had the thermal pads replaced and was very clean. I replaced the thermal paste and it’s been really good. It does perform below average on benchmarks but below average on a 3090 is still amazing and I paid significantly less than average at that time. I can still game at 4k ultra at 60hz which is my current monitors max refresh rate. Just ordered a neo g8 so will push the monitor to max refresh rates soon.
Is that the best it can do at 4K ultra my new 3080 Ti gets 120-140fps at 4K ultra, gets a-lot more on high setting which look just as good as ultra/epic
I did too I got mine for 1500 almost a year ago that was a steel back then since then I mined a little here and there and made 600$ back so I basically got if for 900

Don’t buy a miner’s gpu. If you buy a new gpu and the box seals are broken, take it back. That’s a used and abused mining gpu. Don’t pay a dime for it.
I’m confused you’re saying that if the graphics card is modified the warranty won’t honor the warrant, however you also say it’s a good sign that the original owner took care of it well. So which one is it?

I wouldn't even consider buying one used unless it was at least half the price of the current new price. Not worth the risk, and I usually hang on to my cards for at least 5 to 7 years. Maybe even longer these days as they are reaching the limit of performance without making them the size of a bar fridge.
Here in Australia 🇦🇺 we’re not fortunate enough to get the RTX30 series FE models😢 ….. at launch about 20 came to our shores and we haven’t seen them since (raffle system to have the option to but them from 1 retailer). The FE are beaut looking models🥰🥰🤩 imo. I did manage in the past to get a GTX1080Ti FE which was also a very slick design 💪👍✊. I wish Ngreedia would reconsider selling the FE here … the GTX10 series were the last we got 🤦♂🤦♀😢.
I would imagine that it would depend on the miner in question. Some people have PC's that they keep clean while others don't even throw a can of air at a PC the entire ten years that they had it sitting on the floor in a garage covered in dried up stains and turning beige from years of dust and smoking. I for one have had plenty of mining cards. See...I never throw out my old PC tech. IT sits on a shelf. I took all my old cards and mined with them 24-7 for 2 years non-stop. Within that 2 year time I also bought old cards from Ebay. I never mine with new cards. I game with them. But they do mine when I am not gaming. The old cards I bought from ebay was RX 580's, GTX 1070's and 1080's. The cards never went past 70 degrees even once. They sat at about 62 - 65 degrees. I clean them regularly because they run better when clean and when they run better they make more money. The cards never once ran as hard as it would while gaming. It just ran non stop is all but very under powered. It used 130 watts max. I only needed to plug one of the 2 plugs in on the RX 580's because they used soo little power to mine. I can not game on this card with just one plug. It just can't run the games fully with one plug. But mining was simple to it. One plug was all the power it needed. Way less work than any game would put it through. I would argue that most competent miners will have mining cards that were way better cared for than a gaming one that just sat in a machine running games and reaching temps well past 65 degrees and doing way more calculations than the simple ETH calculation that it does but it just does it non stop. Gaming runs your card as hard as it can. Mining does not. Gamers take their cards and install it then proceed to overclock the crap out of it. Miners take their cards and then under volt it and tune the overclocks. I stopped mining this summer. The old cards are now back to gaming. Yeah...they still work. GPUS were designed to run. Not much you can do to tear it up by having it do its job. The act of mining don't tear your cards up. What tears cards up is retarded owners that are too lazy to do preventative maintenance on their cards. Mining is not the devil for GPU's despite the fact that I used 580 Red Devils to mine. Only one dead card out of all the cards I got. How did it die? I dropped it. But it still looks brand new. They all do. Because competent miners take better care of their equipment than any gamer. So if I was given the choice to buy a used card that was gaming for 2 years or a card that was mining for 2 years.....I am gonna pick the mining card. The card made us money. We totally had the funds to buy cans of air, thermal paste and pads, and plenty of fans. Who do people think really take better care of their cards? Gamers or miners? Buying a card from a gamer would be like buying a PC from a regular consumer. They may or may not have taken care of this machine because they have no incentive to do so. Buying a card from a miner would be like buying a PC from a business. They have incentive to take care of their equipment. The equipment don't get much use because it only does specific tasks for the business unlike a consumer PC used for literally everything. It does those specific tasks all day but only those specific tasks. Some businesses have incompetent leadership but you will run into less incompetence buying stuff from a business rather than some random dingbat out there telling me the card is fine then it arrives with human hairs and crud in grooves and crevices. Thermal pads hard as rocks cause the lazy bum cleaned the card once the entire time they owned it cause they wanted to sell it to you. No other time would they ever take it apart and clean it. Miners do that cause it affects the bottom line. Games do not on average because why?? There is no incentive to take care of your assets. So from my experience....buying used mining cards is just like buying used regular cards. You look at the pictures and try to determine the condition of the card. The End. Thats all you can do. But there is a difference. If you know the card has been mined on....well...you know that most miners care about how much they can mine in a single day. And clean and well maintained cards make more money a day where as gamers only care if the game runs. There is no incentive to care for the card. It takes considerably more power and wear and tear to run COD than to mine ETH. I can run 4 cards mining ETH with the power it takes to run one instance of COD. One of these 2 acts makes you money. One of these 2 people can afford cans of air and thermal pads everyday if needed cause their cards make money 24-7. So from my experiences in this....I have never had an issue buying used mining cards. They always come clean and with original packaging usually. Gamer cards come with bent heatsink fins, stains on the PCB, fans with years of caked on lint that will never come off and human hairs. Why you sell me your hair? The fan always looks chalky no matter how much you scrub it, and its almost a guarantee that the card ran at gaming temps upwards of 75, 80 and sometimes 90 degrees and full power being call by that GPU. I have killed GPUs gaming. I have never killed one mining. Not once. Mining cards are fine. Its the smuck you buy it from that will determine if its a piece of crap or not. Not the act of mining on it.

I’ve bought a couple used mines on gpu’s over time and I’ve never had a issue besides some heat issues which were swiftly fixed with new paste and pads
I've bought an used xfx rx 6700 xt merc and I've got 15 days to "break it" after that I'm on my own but so far everything works fine apart from a little noisy fans. The seller said that it was never used for mining but we all know that it definitely was.
This video proofs that mining cards are not badd in a way that people assume. Of taken care that ussualy means out of the box pad replacement and good thermal paste job is done. In this case are founders 3080s they suffer from small form factor desing and only 2 fans and eaven that is not causing bad thermals or bad performance. To brake theese badd reputation you could do game peformace between 2 of them and it will ne the same...
ain't worthy this time been far to long rally of mining could get rx 580 on the cheap after 6 month of there releaseand granted thermal pads where crusty but at least was bet far lower price point would not bet on 500$ for product whit hot gddr6x at least aim for the sku that been less longer on the market like the refresh make more sense ain't like if some chiken worry about losing to much won't sell after all ^^soon ;)
In Sweden, as far as i know, it doesnt matter. Warranty is warranty no matter who claims it. Think about it, if it has to be the original buyer every christmas present, birthday gift, any gift would be without a warranty.
I've found that if you find a seller with 10+ recent GPU sales *OR* 10+ cards to sell/combination thereof you tend to get a card in better shape than you do from _most_ gamers that have owned their card for a similar time period. Replaced thermal pads are both a good and bad thing. For example, that card was almost definitely taken care of very well, probably has the latest gaming BIOS revision, and will almost definitely run cooler than a stock version since the chances of it being undervolted in an Air conditioned room with fans blowing across it are very high. The downside it even if the warranty did transfer without the receipt, good luck getting a replacement if something fails that you cannot fix. At the same time, my 5700 ran much cooler mining with an undervolt with the RAM bumped up by 200 than it runs while gaming with the same undervolt without the RAM bump as gaming just fires up the core clock much higher, producing more heat, which in turn raises the temp on the RAM. The CPU junction temp +10 is a good guess at how hot the RAM is running if you don't have sensors on the RAM chips. Keep in mind, RAM is fine at higher temps than a CPU/GPU, so seeing a junction temp of 105 isn't a good thing for the core clock, it is fine for the memory (I rarely saw anything over 95 while mining or gaming, but a 5700 should run a tad cooler than a FE 3080). Now when I say you are more likely to get a card that's a bit more beat up from a gamer than a miner, I'm referring to your average PC Joe/Jane, not people who frequent tech YT vids, as w are a niche of a niche of a niche. When we sell a card we are probably going to take it apart, clean everything, spray some lube on the fans, wipe them again, make sure the pads are in good shape w/o replacing them unless 100% necessary so as not to void the warranty, add a little extra torque to the backplate screws to make sure there is good contacts for cooling (which drops the temps on XFX 5700 THICC 1 cards by about 7-10c under load). Update the BIOS if necessary, give it a furmark test, and make sure that the seller is 100% aware of what they are getting. Again, w aren't _normal_ in that regard. A regular gamer whose had the card in a system for a year or two is going to pull it, wipe it down if you're lucky, hopefully put it in the packaging it came in including the anti static bag (again, this is a longshot for sellers who don't offer products on a regular basis), then put it in a FedEx box and ship it. The chances of undervolting are slim, the chances of running at high temps with fans firing at 100% for 5 or 6 hours at a time are extremely high, chances of a constant overclock seem to go up with the model of the card...lol, you can definitely get some interestingly shaped dust bunnies and questionable packing. If I see bubble wrap and crumpled Newspaper that's usually a *WIN!* when it comes to gaming cards (Idc what they use to stop the card/s from bouncing around if they don't have the original packing, I just want it packed safely, both inside the GPU box and the box that is packed in, which miners tend to be professionals at, regular gamers notsomuch. Now I'm not blaming gamers here, just stating the objective truth. Most of them do not take care of the cards as well as people relying on them to print money. Most aren't comfortable taking a card apart to clean it, and honestly, if they've never done it, I'd rather they didn't. Most don't undervolt bc they want the card to run faster, and giving it less power seems counter-intuitive. It may be common knowledge to you and I, but most people aren't going to think _"Hmm, my card is throttling and dropping 200mhz then ramping back up, I wonder if an undervolt would drop the temps and let it flex a little bit more?"_ They normally think _"Guess I need to put the fan speed to 100%,"_ if it even occurs to them at all. Again, not faulting them, there are plenty of things around the house I'm clueless about too. My fridge keeps things cool enough, bu I have no clue if it's running optimally and will continue to do so for the next 5 years. _shrug,_ Just bc we all use the same things doesn't mean we all share the same knowledge, even though there are a *LOT* of home appliance channels on YT. So just be careful, make sure to ask the person if the card has the latest gaming BIOS revision on it, ask what voltage it was running at, if they bumped the clocks etc.. If a miner doesn't know what you're talking about then I wouldn't buy the card. A gamer? eh, though gaming does hammer cards, just plugging in some cards and putting them on Nicehash 24/7 without optimizing them for a long life could have been pretty brutal on them too as then you have the clocks going nuts for a miniscule hash bump, and Nicehash will extract every bit of power it can if you let it. Most miners will immidiately know though, and if they answer correctly you are almost definitely going to get a card in pretty darn good shape.
Gaming my 3090 memory stock thermal pads hits max 86 while mining 102 but micron and nvidia have come out and said GDDR6x is good til 120c that’s why it throttles at 110c so it doesn’t hit the 120c
@@cameronm6336 Eth Hash is a memory intensive algorithm. The gpu core does most of the work when gaming, especially on a 24gb 3090. Swap that 3090 to Ergo or Flux and your temps will most likely be around that 90C mark
Dude nothing is wrong with 102c I’ve been mining on my 3090 with no active backplate cooling since December of 2020 and it still holds 1400 on the memory and hits 124.7mh at 302 watts which is the normal wattage for a 3090 when miners reduce it.. Also like I said when I play games the memory stays around 86 which is completely fine.. not really sure what you were trying to tell me.. I have been mining for long time I lucked out and got a bunch of 3000 series at MSRP at launch and now I’ve sold them all but one 3060ti and not one buyer has wrote back that anything at all is wrong! So like I said go look up the video Micron Responds! It’s about their memory that they make for the 3000 series the gddr6x and you find out it’s fine up to 120c

i wouldnt dream of it unless the price is considerably lower than a new one why buy a £600 GPU thats had the backside screamed off it for the last 2 years when you can get a brand new one for £50 or even $100 more which includes warrenty?
1. Most mining cards have not been modified, possibly undervolting but nothing more than that. 2. Most of the higher end gpu's have BAD stock memory cooling and mining is VERY memory intensive, that means memory temps in excess of 100 24/7 for months, in some cases years. 3. Fans have been running often at 100% for months/years and the bearings will often be in bad shape when you get one of these cards, if you can't get replacement fans and they go you're SOL. 4. Warranty service (if the warrany is transferable and not expired) involves sending the gpu to the manufacturer, at your expense and waiting, sometimes for months... for them to "fix" or replace the card. If you get lucky and the card was undervolted and not run at 100% fan 24/7 grats, if you don't get lucky your fukt. For me that's a no go, it's worth it (to me) to pay more and not worry about any of this shit. 90% of you will get a card that will work for you for years without any problems, do you really wanna be the 10% who don't. Much as I hate online retail I've never brought home a card from any retail place that was DOA or had problems out of the box, missing parts or any other issues. I suppose if you had your heart set on a 3080 Ti and you can get one for $400 US maybe that's worth the risk, but those are the cards that have the most "factory" overclocking and the worst cooling, that means the most wear and tear from mining even when undervolted, there's a reason that you see videos on youtube of people "copper modding" 3080's, because the memory cooling on those cards is FUCKING TERRIBLE, a lot of the stock cards have memory temps above 110f... you really want a card that's been cooking its memory 24/7 for the last 18 months.
1. Anyone not having modified a card in terms of undervolting has been running into thermal issues while mining. It is absolutely necessary to do Overclocks, but at the same time it isn´t damaging not having done it at first. So whenever someone starts out mining they are in fear of OCs especially high ones which is actually pretty good for newbies. I mean Reddit is full of people asking if mining OCs can damage cards. 2. When memory temp during mining reaches 100°C-110°C (depending on OS actually) then the cards throttle heavily which decreases Hashrate heavily. Most Miners invest into thermal pads pretty early which doesn´t void any warranty or anything unless you´re looking at sh** manufacturers. 3. I´ve seen people run cards at 100% Fanspeed. Though most people don´t because guess what. They don´t want them to die either. Some people have done testing over 2-5years on 1060 6gb GPUs which ran at 100% and suprisingly many of them never had Issues with fans. Especially EVGA was great here again. 4. For getting a warranty I´d honestly worry more about the Manufacturer and less about it being new or now. Again "EVGA is great about this" and I´ve yet seen thousands of people wanting to buy something like a Gigabyte 3080 which then needs mem pad replacement as soon as bought and so on. So honestly. If I can get a EVGA 3080 Ti for the price of a new Gigabyte 3080 then I very well damn concider that a way better buy. Fans are cheap. DIRT CHEAP. You cant get the specific one? Well then strap a noctua one to it and be done with it for lifetime. It´s soooo simple and SOO much cheaper. Just always buy in person and DOA isn´t a factor. Copper Modding actually works really great. So great in fact, that guess what. Manufacturers have caught on and some have started to not use as thick of Thermal Pads. Don´t get me wrong. If you´re tech illiterate then don´t buy a used card. But if you have someone half capable in family or friends then go for it you´ll save a shitton of money.
Bought a 3090 fe for 650£ from ebay a week ago & since then I have been doing tests/stress and the card works 100% fine. I Overclocked the card +75cc +500mc & got 17900 score in superposition with 70c max temp.
The GPUs are meant for heavy use. Gaming and mining is not the only application of usage. AI workloads or rendering are other possibilities. The thermal expansion favors mining GPUs over casual use at the end of the day.
If you look at the lower end FPS on those cards, they are all about the same (Steady 100s) while the upper end FPS is wildly different. I would argue that if the lower end is the thing you notice makes a difference, then the cheapest of those cards is the correct choice. The upper end additional FPS additions aren't noticed on cards that powerful, it's only the lower end FPS troughs within tests that mean anything.
Bought rx 580 for 60euro. It crashes constantly and goes black screen for 5 seconds every minute or so if you run it at full speed. It also coil whines and makes weird noises 😀 My PC won't boot if I leave the case connected to electricity. For some reason GPU stays dead unless you let it be for a while with electricity cut off. The best part is, I am still using it (3d month now) and planning to replace it with a new GPU. Limiting FPS in games helps avoiding black screens and I always manually switch off PSU to be able to boot my PC so ... the gpu is usable. Would I buy anything beefier and potentially mined by a filthy miner for a significant sum of money? No thanks. They made GPU prices sky high, profited from their GPU and now look for absolute idiots who pay them almost full price xDD
I bought a used 3070 FE with a 4mos warranty from the seller. I do not if it was mined on. After 4mos, the card died, I can't claim warranty anymore. So I decided to have it repaired. According to the repairman, power IC gave out. He was able to revive it, but after 2 days it died again. So I sent it back, same issue but different power IC this time. It got fixed, after 2 weeks it died again.
In my country 90-95% of the folk into mining don’t know nuts about computers never mind about taking care of its components. The Marvins here are akin to striking a lottery technically. Also there is no such thing as “returning to the seller”. You can only possibly try a RMA and it will be subjected to the maa a manufacturer whether they will honour it or not since some of them explicit warn people that their gpus are not for mining and will void existing warranties.
If a card had runs properly for it's entire warranty, it's probably durable enough to work for many years. Custom cooling and under-volting may also increase life span. But you never know. Might be in pristine condition and can end up dying in your hands. Luck of the draw :)
My first 3090 died within 2 days cuz they didn’t make the 3rd fan ramp up like it needed to to cool the power delivery and it shot my entire card the lights and sensors all broke however the card still worked lol 😂 I have a 3090 I’ve been mining on for almost 2 years now and it’s not gotten hotter or worse performance or anything.. Linus did a video of this it’s called Bullshit company says mining card loss performance. I wonder why a company would say every year it loses 10% performance cuz they want you to buy NEW from them.. duhh lol
Luck of the draw isn't something you really need to be doing, especially if you're going to spend quite a bit of money on it. Buy a new one. At least then you definiitely know it hasn't been abused. If money isn't a concern or any kind of problem and a gamble on a miner's GPU interests you then ok. It's not something I'll ever do though.
Dude it’s less than a year old, even if mining did degrade gpu’s it would take much longer than 1 year! If you were to boycott all mining gpu’s there would basically be none left to use! Heat does the damage not the process, that would be a terrible investment!
I've only bought a single new gpu ever. With a little research you can find reputable resellers that sell reliable used tech. I prefer lower power cards like the 1650 non super. I don't need to game at 4k, ultra 60fps. The games have never been more fun to play.

Only one thing you need to pay attention after you buy it intast flash the original bios cuz a lot of undervolted shit bios i get 1660 super for a gift i start the firestrike 2 sec later the vrm explodes and burn down the pcb the core also bricked the last owner forget tp flash back the original bios.the aftermarket cooler dirt cheap you buy a used card for 300-600 bucks the 15 for a new fan and 5 for a new paste not a big loss.
Ran a gpu miner for 1 year, cleaned the heat sinks religiously...card ran at decent temps. After 1 year, stripped it down, clearing all parts, replaced the thermal paiste. Now it runs 10°C cooler. Your gpu can do better. Look after it. Petty sure a constant stable temp. on a gpu is better than going hot/cold due to use. Mining isn't killing cards
but what if u're buying a used GPU for a dedicated streaming workstation PC and not for gaming? right now i don't think a GPU for gaming right now ain't worth it atm despite me havin a GTX 1080Ti for my main gaming PC, but i have a 3 PC setup one for gaming and 1 for streaming oh and my former gaming PC i now have recycled as a dedicated video editing software workstation PC
Linus' tests showed largely mining GPUs really don't matter in quality. They are solid even after extensive use. So, no real need to worry getting a great card at real value.
damn I bought a asus strix 3060ti w all the money I saved up on ebay to build my first pc & the gpu is the the first thing I got so I can get the hardest part done but I can’t test it in time to get any refunds
Thanks for the video! I soon (when the prices have reached their lowest) want to buy a used RTX2080(ti). I still have an old 3D vision monitor, and the 2080 and 2080ti are the two strongest GPU models to ever support 3dv, as support has been ceased from the super model ongoing. My thoughts where similar to your's: One with good RAM cooling, that from the average buyer's profile most probably has not been overclocked or been abused for mining. The ti was known for RAM issues back then, but I think this doesn't necessarily count for all vendors' cooling systems .. Was mining a popular thing to do with a 2080ti, at all? (They had rather terrible price/performance raito..) I also plan on undervolting and underclocking GPU and mem by a big margin, like 10% for optimizing it's lifespan. As I want to catch up all the nice games from about 2010 to 2020 the resulting performance should be enough, even with 3DVision enabled (which increases GPU load by about 75%). (It probably is safe to say, that warranty isn't a decisive factor at this age) Which model (non-ti vs. ti) and vendor (Probably best is amongst ASUS, MSI EVGA?) would you recommend?

@@elmariachi5133 Interesting question! because mining was still profitable on older hardware, 2080 Ti's were used for mining in the recent boom too. A good place to start would be an EVGA FTW3 Ultra as their ICX2 cooler / sensors do a good gob of giving you a plethora of temp readouts that you wont find on other cards. Otherwise, same applies. Find cards with low temps and follow the testing instructions as soon as you get the card... lightly abuse it to make sure its fine :) hope this helps!
@@dalkospero1345 it really depends on how well its been looked after but It's typically the bearings in the fans that fail. Mounting screws are not usually an issue unless they're stripped and good RGB LEDs should last for tens of thousands of hours on max, so likely will outlast other things that will kill the card (like solder fatigue)

I found a miner selling a 1 year used (probably more than a year used since it came out in dec 2020)rtx non LHR 3060ti for $300 and just recently I found a brand new RX 6650 XT also selling for $300. can you help me choose which do you think is the better choice to pick? also taking into consideration I live in southeast asia, ambient temps here average around 26-30c.
I'm from SEA and one thing to note even though its ambient temps are 26-30 its still very humid making it very moist which can damage electronics so make sure you're house has air conditioning or your pc has good cooling.
I bought my 3080 and mined on it for 6 months before putting it into my new rig build. EVGA FTW3. I didn’t a backplate mod with thermal pads to try and reduce memory temps to keep the mtemps below 95c while mining! But the ddr6x is specced for up to 110c. But I definitely wasn’t comfortable running my cards that hot
I did the thermal paste/pad mods on my 3080Ti because I have an SFF build with very limited airflow & my fan was getting annoyingly loud in games like Forza. The main problem was my hotspot temp on my core. After opening it I realized nvidia missed the paste on almost the entire upper half of my dye. After doing the mods/undervolting, my core temp was about 20° lower & my memory was around 8° lower. I had gotten unlucky from the factory & now when I want to sell it people are going to think it’s been mining
Fans are $25 a set. Lol. Easy peasy. And you would never know they were mined on if you weren't told. I sold 30 cards already and everyone was mint. But that's how I roll.
Right there with you, bought a 3090 that was mined on for a year, owner replaced the thermal pads on it along with adding more to the entire card itself, he also added pads to the VRAM chips on the back (Thanks Nvidia) and dusted it before it was sent, super nice guy and have had 0 problems with it so far! 10/10 would recommend buying a used GPU, contact the owner ask questions about it and get as much info as possible and you should be fine! had mine for about 2 months now with 0 problems :)
Pretty dumb video. I have more experience with GPU's and long term use than you I'm assuming. Mining is actually more safe than gaming. Most cards that gamers use get crammed into a(most likely) case with crap airflow. All GPU's need is airflow. The dirt on the fans is cleaned in 10 minutes using 90%+ ISO. Title the video "Comparing a used GPU to a new."

for large scale mining operations (hundreds of cards) RX 4xx and 5xx series are workhorses, 6 years working non stop at 70-80 degrees, 99% of capacity, around 3% failure rate after around 4 years, providing you change fans as soons as they start failing and change thermal paste and pads every two years or so, general cleaning and checkup every 6 months, gtx1060s are the most durable of the 10 series, at around 1% failure rate after 5 years, 1070 and 1080s have a much higher failure rates, the newer ones i dont have much experience since the people i know never upgraded (they are still mining with the same cards since 2016-2017) only a few of the newer AMD and NVIDIA cards here and there, newer cards are to hot for the climate of my country, 3090s would die in less than three months
