If you fish with a BAIT LAUNCHER, you NEED to WATCH THIS! In this video, we experiment with a few different methods to load and shoot your COMPRESSED AIR BAIT LAUNCHER WITHOUT FREEZING the entire bait rig! People ask us all the time whether or not they have to freeze their bait rig inside a block of ice to shoot it out of a Bait Cannon. Frozen bait molds are effective, but they also have some drawbacks. Turns out, there are some other options available to you!
We tested these options:
1) Backing: Ice; Rig: Wal Mart brand wire rig (2 hooks); Weight: 3oz Pyramid; Hooks: 1/0 circle; Bait: Cut Mullet; Pressure: 120psi
2) Backing: Potato; Rig: Wal Mart brand wire rig (2 hooks); Weight: 3oz Pyramid; Hooks: 1/0 circle; Bait: Cut Mullet; Pressure: 120psi
1) Backing: Ice; Rig: Homemade braided leader 20# (2 hooks); Weight: 3oz Pyramid; Hooks: 1/0 circle; Bait: Cut Mullet; Pressure: 120psi

Nice video buddy. Yes cut the pretty end off the barrel before you or someone else gets hurt. Watching you with your air canon makes me want to build several of them for my young grandbabies. To solve the problem of a plug to seal in all the air pressure to shoot the package as far as the air pressure is going to move it. I'd use a soft type of foam about 2 or 3 inches thick the diameter of the inside of the pipe but a little bit bigger so you can get max air pressure to stay behind the foam plug. To keep reusing that plug, I'd use a 108 lb fishing line and you attach the line going in the middle of the plug to other side a secure it with a strong round piece of bamboo rod around 3/16" an over half the diameter of plug an id use spray glue on plug once line an wooden rod are tied secure together and spray the glue and let it get dry to the touch and then put a piece of black gorilla tape over it to adhere to the spray glue. Then have 12 to 14 feet of 108 lb test line coming out the barrel once plug is ready, an tie other end securely to a rubber tubing atleast around 6 feet long so it has room to stretch out before returning with the foam plug, to absorb the shock when it's fired. You can go to Walmart and buy exercise tubing bands and I'd use the black one because it's the strongest of the colors. Each color is x amount of pounds. The plug fires out an goes till the rubber tubing is reached its max length and then it comes back so your able to reuse it over n over. I'd use a 12 volt air pump also from Walmart and I have a small 12 volt battery that I can jump start a vehicle with. It's the perfect size to mount onto the canon. An for the release valve, one in video does work but not the best when you test it against other types of valves. Knowing what I know I would go with an electric valve that you use with lawn watering pipes for sprinklers. Mainly because when you hi the button that valve opens up so fast every pound of air is able to go I to the barrel and send your projectile out super fast. Once you test this set up, your going to thank me for telling you all. The valve last I remember is working on a 9volt DC power. But you can use 12 volt to operate it. If you wanted you can add a square 9vokt battery an hook it to the switch to fire it. Just remember that all your wire connections id would solder them then have heat shrink tubing over the open wires so they are sealed water tight. They also make liquid tape, electrical tape that's water proof instead of heat shrink tubes. I like the heat shrink tubes because it looks nicer an more professional. I could go on about the tripod legs on it. But this is already to long. Happy hunting you all and stay safe and wear safety glasses when shooting anything out using compressed air.

Just found your channel! Checking out the price of bait cannons was a shock so I did a DIY YT search and your channel came up. I believe the reason that you get tangles when you blast your hooks and weight outside of an ice block is that the lack of aerodynamics of those three items will cause the bait and hooks to circle around the weight which should be leading the way because of the triangle shape and mass. If you can find a way to put the bait and hooks compactly inside of a quickly water soluble material that would be closed on the leading edge that may help a lot. Or; Maybe try putting a round cardboard plug behind the potato to absorb the massive energy of the air release and poke the shank of the hooks into the leading edge of the potato and make a depression on the leading edge of the potato (with a melon baller) to nestle the weight in during the beginning of the shot. Also to make it easier on making potato plugs grind the outside edge of the PVC to a circular edge (on a belt sander) and it will make cutting through the potato a lot easier. I like the way you think, the same as I do. If I cant make it myself, almost everything I buy is modified to make it more efficient or adaptable. You just got a new Subscriber.

I have used a potato with great success. I cut about a 3 1/2 piece of 1 1/2" pvc and bevel outer edge down the inner side to create a sharpened corer. Just put corer on potato and hit hit with palm of hand to create a nice plug. My barrel has a threaded end at ball valve and I insert the potato plug from there then screw together then drop sinker and a whole whiting down the barrel. I also use a small piece of masking tape to temporarily hold line when using a spin caster . If windy it holds the line since you cant use your finger

I love that setup! I was watching that last shot frame by frame, I THINK all that slack line grabbed the bail and pulled it shut, so your leader snapped and kept flying, and the swivel bounced back at you. If you watch closely you can see the bail is open, and the second you launch, it snaps shut.

Thanks Mike. We truly appreciate your support. We typically just use the pvc cement for the air valve. For this early build we used a rubber air valve, and the seal with pvc cement worked well. In later builds we switched to metal valves so we added a rubber gasket / washer and still used pvc cement. Hope this helps!

I've made so many of these. I've made multiple diameter barrels from 2inch down to 1 inch. I can launch live bait 300-400 yards with ease. Like with my 1.25 barrel a 3/4 pvc cap fits in air tight. So drill a hole in the top of cap put a swivel threw it just to where the top of swivel is exposed. Then melt down some lead and pour it in the cap. Spray some water on it right away and it's ready

Thanks for the video. Lots of great ideas! I haven’t looked to see if anyone else is doing this or not, but what about a tennis ball? 2.5” sch 40 pvc pipe ID is perfect for a tennis ball. Drill a couple of holes through the ball to run a piece of rope through, tie a knot so your ball is attached to the rope. The other end can be run through a hole on the barrel behind where the ball will get installed to. That will serve as your wad and the rope will keep it from flying away. Cleaner than potatoes and can be reused. I mainly kayak fish when I go to the beach, but I’ve considered surf fishing so this could be a fun project to do with my daughter. Thanks.

Just found this vid. I filed the end of my barrel on the inside , making it into a cutter and just push it into the tater then push it down forming a good tight seal. I can fire live catfish as bait into the lakes here and they swim just fine after the shot. Make sure your tater plug is longer than the barrel is wide or it could spin inside as the air forces it out.

Interesting. I was wondering if there was a way, other than incasing in ice, to shoot your bait while maintaining distance and fishing ability. I will be down in Florida next year visiting my brother so I want to be ready for a month of surf fishing when I get there. Your videos help. Thank you. One last thought for you...If you could freeze a water cylinder and then place your bait rig into it right before shooting wouldn't that solve the melting time problem and the tangle problem? The hangup could be the open cylinder catching air and spinning the rig into a tangled mess instead of flying true. I need to figure out a way to put an ice cap on the cylinder after loading the bait. Anyway thanks again for the practical demonstration and education.

Just a thought...what if you set up for a fish finder rig, and freeze just the weight. That way your bait and hook is still exposed as soon as it hits the water. Also, I have seen some other people use a section of pipe that is the same as the barrel and they pack sand around their weight, hooks and bait. The sand needs to be wet and firmly packed. Once it hits the water any remaining sand will rinse off instantly.

You want tha shit lenth ways directly on top and drop some slack line to ground with the lead coil it up up abot 6 times when fired it has like let off im talkin 300yds easy . The short tuna rods with the rollers sre the best for distance but your left with a short rod . Im only fish fresh water so that isn't a big problem. Next time you make the barrel break and attach it. Just slide it down farther to cover any inside holes that you are worried about catching on. So basically you're creating a double thick tube that nobody will see as long as you have an exposed Edge that is only the outer peace. The holes on the outer peace become blind holes to the inside pipe. I was wondering also if you could make a die cutter for the plug out of metal with sharp edges. Not only to cut potato but you could also try some other things like dry ice. See if Water Ice or dry ice will die cut with a pipe.
@Woods2Table
@Woods2Table 2 года назад
I like the idea of making a cutter that you can reuse. For the muzzle break - its a PVC connector so it has that little ridge inside that would keep you from sliding it all the way onto the other piece of PVC. Suppose you could either sand that down, or just not glue it in place and flip it around to have the smooth side exposed when firing this way. All good suggestions, thanks!

my concern would be that once the line went tight, you'd get sort of a rubber band effect and it would cause it to a) tumble, and / or rip the bait off - if I'm following your question correctly. But, it would solve the 'time to melt' problem on the rig. Also depending on the size of the weight and the size of the ice, your rig could still be suspended near the surface until the ice melted.
