Gorgeous painting! I am watching you from Brasilia, Brazil, a place with no snow. I would like to see you paint trees in the Spring or Summer, in order to learn lots more from you about painting trees and plein air, since you are very inspiring. I like the way you explain too.
Love your style and attitude. Health problems actually brought me back to art after a long hiatus since a prolific childhood and in one sense it was a gift. I've been struggling a bit with finding my way to work with oil paints and seeing someone like yourself reminds me of what it should be about. One thing I have struggled with is getting fine lines and never thought to use the palette knife! You live you learn,Thanks
Hey there, thanks for watching and commenting! I am glad to hear that your health struggles helped you rediscover your artiistic gifting, its so important. I like the palette knife for variety and other effects like texture & fine lines as you said, take care happy painting!
I’m 24 I’m in the process of breaking my back 😂😂 I also had a teacher that told me to stand while painting, most likely you are watching a picture standing up. I guess he didn’t care about social media anyway😂
Thanks Fran!, 😄 glad it was helpful, your welcome. It surprises me how many people like this tree painting, at the time I was a little disappointed in some parts of it. Thanks so much for watching!
You dont really get a "warm cool color" by mixing yellow into your violet... you start to grey the mix when you mix compliments like that, reduce saturation (FYI for painters learning to mix). Nice video, great painting.
Perfectly said Bryan, and thanks for watching and commenting. 👍 Depending on what part of the video, I may have been talking about what I light heartedly call a "cwarm" (a cool and a warm) - but i dont really mix it, or over mix it to a gray. I take a warm puddle and a cool puddle, swipe a stroke from each and put it on the canvas, producing an undermixed warm/cool, .... your point for beginners on color mixing is well taken! , thanks buddy all the best to you 😀
Thanks so much! I definitely need to work on varying my greens... Trying to get those subtle warms and cools can be so difficult sometimes! The joys of painting I suppose lol :D So you used to play pro hockey? Is hockey as brutal as some of the youtube videos show? (With guys getting shoved against the wall etc.) Anyways, my second semester of sophomore year at college is here :D This semester in painting class they're introducing us to watercolor, acrylic, and gouache. Right now we're starting with watercolor and all I can say is... YESHHHH! Going from oil painting (which obeys your commands quite nicely) to watercolor (which refuses to listen to anything) is a little bit jarring XD
welcome !, 😀 I agree, for a while I was really liking black and cad yellow or black and yellow ochre for nice subtle greens, but..I eliminated black from my palette for a while to force myself to make more colorful shadows etc, yes I played on college scholarship at Miami University in Oxford OH, and then pro for a few years, it was a blessing in my life , but hard on the old body! ..yes its a pretty brutal sport Hope you have a great semester, LOL ...let me know how the water color goes, Ive always wanted to try it, never have, post some on your insta 👍
Thanks G!, sounds good, you can do it bro..you are an excellent drawer and realist so I think its just relaxing and having fun, blending, experimenting , going outside the lines a bit . I think it would help me to paint more in your style sometimes to- thanks for checking in! 😄
I’m sorry to hear about your back but just to reassure you my husband had a disc removed many years ago when he was only 36yrs old. He was a very competitive sportsman and I never thought he’d play sport again. Wrong! In no time at all he was playing again with no problems ever since. Great tutorial.
Hey thanks so much for the encouragement 😊so glad he got some relief and could return to the activities he loves ..I just got stem cell injections from my own bone marrow cells in another month or two I’ll know if it worked , got to stay positive right? Thanks again for the kind words and for watching -take care, blessings 👍
Wow. Love your video. I have just started plein air painting with oils and have made a few videos on my channel. You have inspired me to keep going thank you.
awesome Lewis, glad to hear it, you will love plein air painting, its wonderful addiction! 😊 I'll hop over to your channel and check out your video, very cool.. thanks for watching and let me know how your paintings go 👍
I've painted some real thick stuff and not noticed cracking even 10-15 yrs years later, I do use various mediums in the later stages of my paintings which I think helps. I think if you look at Monet paintings and really old paintings you can see cracking, so eventually I think youre right but I find oils really resilient ...thanks again!
I was like : I need to find a painter who paint loose and playful, and bam, you shown up on my recommendation! I am sooooo hooked, except omg man, way tooo many color on your palette which is exactly what I dislike since,,,, paint are heavy and normally I am just too lazy to carry all color especially plein air! Don’t u think too many color will not achieve color harmony ?! I used to have a teacher who told me you can have limited color and try not to match or mix exact the same color ! If I add a new color like Prussia blue I will need to add it all over or that area won’t match ‘ Also I sooooooo fvcking agree with you about don’t add white to green ! I learned it hard way omfg, add more yellow instead!
Hey Hucheon!, glad you found my channel buddy and thanks for watching and commenting, good to hear your thoughts, Yeah I agree with your color harmony thoughts, a limited palette or split limited palette is a nice way to achieve that (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-F3RtKy_Gkaw.html) check this vid out...but at the same time I don't use every color on there for every painting and I do limit the palette sometimes, I think its whatever works for you right, thats whats cool about plein air painting, seeing and mixing, being original and unique, not copying, no formulas....I think I can still achieve color harmony with 12 colors if my seeing and my mixing are spot on, great thoughts man, would love to get more of your feedback and let me know what kind of videos would help you 😎
@@LearningPleinAir Thanks Terry. do you go to some plein air competitions? I would love to see a vlog of you going there , stamp your canvas, scouting site and why you pick those sites, finishing up the painting in time or doing quick draw , then film the reception if possible, hope you also win some award but i think those events mostly motivate us to paint instead of only aiming to win, but if you have tips how to win, that would be great too. Hope it is not too much for you lol. i mean last year my Escalanta plein air was kinda disaster, my plane landed so late, then pick up rental car at 6pm at airport, then forgot to buy canvas, ending up wasting a whole day next day to buy suppy, then drive back to Escalanta at Utah,,,,,i made manyyyyyy mistakes, ugh. good thing is someone bought my painting in the end but still dreadful trip
Hey Huchen!, I havent gone to plein air events for years now but I plan to go soon, and great idea, ..filming it while I'm there, I like it. I congratulate you on participating in a plein air event , that is not easy and a great learning process, and you sold a painting!, nice job bro. Yes they are kinda stressful events are'nt they?, I'm going to the Plein air convention in Santa Fe, and I'll film some footage there...in May..take care! Huchen 😁
@@LearningPleinAir oh that SANTE FE event is being promoated all over the place. I know it is such a big deal for the painters but the cost is jut not friendly for me so I immediately dont consider it. I hope to see your vlog there and let me see how fancy it is. thank you so much!
Hey Bert , yes to make the colors bold and vibrant also to add texture which creates interest ✅ good to hear from you , let me know how else I can help 😎
My pleasure thank you for watching Robert!, 🖼️🖼️..yes the book that I referenced in the power tip on color mixing is The Oil Painters Question and Answer Book , by Hazel Harrison. Let me know how else I can help! 😊
@@LearningPleinAir 😊😁🎨🎨 thank YOU very very much dear learning plein air 💞💞🎨🎨🎨 and thank YOU very very much for this great videos and for the most beautyful teaching 💪💪😎😁💞🌺🎨🎨🎨 very best regards from Salzburg Austria, Robert ⛱☕🚵♂️🧗♂️🌺🎨
I have suffered from back issues. First to go was my upper spine, C5/6/7...the nerves that control my left arm come through those. Lost use of arm for about a year or so, finally had surgery and regained 85 percent use of that arm and I am left handed! Lol. Lower back been showing issues recently. It’s all good. Do the best I can, being more careful now, and go on with it. I’m still wondering what God has me here to do. Enjoyed the vid once again!
Darn Gary, neck and back issues, I feel for ya. In my very last pro hockey game I played in I crashed into the goal post at high speed , head on, it jacked my neck up and it still bothers me. Glad that surgery helped you. I agree, we just have to adapt and learn what we can and cannot do, ask for help, and train hard but safely in the gym. God will show you, I'm sure. You have unique gifts and talents and he has a plan for them. I've turned my back on painting many times over the years, but..it always comes back to me and finally I think its getting thru my thick head, its part of the plan..LOL Take care bud and thanks for watching and supporting, talk to ya soon.
@@LearningPleinAir thanks! This is my second time to try painting over the past year or so. Always loved art class as a kid. Watercolor and acrylics didn’t do anything but I enjoy the oils. Will be checking out more of your vids, etc. I like the impressionist style!!

I have degenerative disc disease which is, as you know, Horrible. I dont like to admit to it but since you have, i will too. I use hand warmers strategically placed🤭🏴
I'm sorry you have to suffer through back pain Lesley, I'm happy to hear you still paint though, I think it helps us to stay positive, 😊 -great idea on the handwarmers! Might have to try that one...
darn Debra, I understand. 😟It would be so great if you could even get in the back yard, or front porch.. but I get it, there is pain, keep your back safe... and thank you for watching my videos!
