Very helpful tutorial. I love Bob Ross. He introduced me to painting. Then I found a local class. I showed up with my giant brushes & actually thought I was introducing my instructor to a new way to paint. Lol Fortunately for me, I fell in love with oil painting & soaked up everything I could find. I read books, took classes but mostly I practiced. The more I learn about it, the more I realize there is to learn. Thank you for sharing a great lesson.

Great pts about values & color saturation, adding the sky holes made the tree look much more realistic, it was too solid in its form; trees need to breathe, let the wind pass through. Thanks for educ. vid!

I like your tree . I’ve been painting for 23 years and familiar with everything else I understand you’re teaching and I like your style. And believe me after 23 years you can still screw things up! It is very hard for a beginner to wrap his head around all the things involved in painting. Just keep going, right! Thanks for the video. I really enjoyed it and watching for more.

Clear and succinct principles. I have often ie all the time used a touch of red to neutralise/dull greens but I'll try burnt sienna as I can see how it would also help overall colour harmony if you're using burnt sienna in other parts of the painting.

Hahahaha, I am a beginner who just started on and off for a month. And you are spot on I made almost all the mistakes you mentioned 😂😂 (well except the sky I just know it isn’t straight blue it is more white than blue) I am not ashamed of myself though, I noticed I made these mistakes and then I go around to look for ways to fix it and I found your channel! Quite wanted to give this another go although my technique might be hindering me from repeating what I see here. But at the end it’s about trying and practicing right!

In defense of Bob Ross and his painting style...He had to paint an 18 x 24 in less than a half hour...from beginning to end. Including his signature. So the trees you were painting were done after all the background behind them were finished. They were painted on top of the sky, the clouds, the mountains, the fields, forests, and water. Sky holes were done automatically. Branches could be made with an airy look instead of patches of color...and didn't have to be done with a fan brush.
@JasonTako

Bob was great... if you primary goal is to get an 18x24 canvas done in less than a half hour.

Hey Jason, you were right! This IS super helpful! I'm going to slow down the playback speed and pause if I need to so that I can try painting the tree along with you . Your comment about the BR estate suing you cracked me up :). You say in the video there's more that you could have done on the shadow side and I wonder if you meant painting the sky reflecting on parts of the shadowed foliage... I'll see if I can figure it out. ANYway, THANKS SO MUCH for suggesting I watch this! It's REALLY great!
@JasonTako
@JasonTako 2 года назад
Hi Roxanne, so glad this helped! Yes, with the shadow side I could have added some ever-so-slightly lighter, cooler values. But you have to be careful so as to not destroy the value structure that is already established. Many fine trees can be painted without this, and if the trees are small in the landscape (or if I'm just doing a quick sketch/demo) I may just leave those values out. However, if the tree is the main subject matter and I have the time, I will most likely try to add them in for increased interest.

Hi Jason, I was wondering about distant trees (trees in the background). As you go back, the values get closer. When you said to make sure that the value of the trees are darker than the ground and sky, you meant only trees in the foreground, right? That doesn't apply to middle and background?
@JasonTako
@JasonTako Год назад
Yes it does also apply to the middle and background as well. There are always caveats, such as dark stromy skies, yellow autumn leaves, etc. But in most cases you need to key in the sky with the rest of the landscape, which means that the sky is usually a lot lighter in value than what most people think.

I started painting woth bob ross. He was amazing. I eventually reached out to other painters, learning different techniques, but carried many of his teaching along with me. @miriamfitzpatrick5598
@miriamfitzpatrick5598 11 месяцев назад
Well I’ve painted very many Bob Ross paintings and followed other artists too. I found Bob Ross painting instructions so easy to follow and so easy to paint, my paintings always turned out really beautiful, not saying this just myself , but everyone who viewed my paintings, were so impressed by them and I was commissioned to do paintings for other people, which I did successfully. That first painting ? you did , my great grandchildren (2girls aged 5 and 6 years) did some paintings for me, that were well done for their age, and looked like paintings, but I find it hard to understand that what you painted as beginners tree paintings can possibly be true, it was ghastly and putting the sky in after painting that blob, I seriously find it hard to believe that any adult could possibly make such a mess and think they’d painted a tree 🤷‍♀️. Yes I do paint, landscapes, and occasionally I paint some portraits. Excuse me if I appear to sound judgemental, but just find it hard to believe any adult would think they had painted a tree with a sky thrown in afterwards. Miriam, Ireland.

If someone is happy with the Ross style and that is their thing to make them happy, it is perfectly fine. His style or any others and yours shouldn't be compared in order to teach your style. Not everyone wants to copy just you. There are some artists would say your way is wrong. Some would say your tree wasn't finished. Some would say you over did it. Yours is not the end all. Who wants to be a robot to one style, like just yours.

You put a lot of words in my mouth. I didn't say any of the things you said. Nor was this to be a finished painting, just a demo to illustrate some concepts, and just having a little fun in the process. Sorry you didn't like it.

@@JasonTako. People hear the evil in their own heads and respond accordingly not realizing that hearing and responding to what is actually said would make them appear a lot more intelligent. Thank you for you this very helpful video!

Why did you not paint the whole sky first then paint the tree over top of it?

Why not paint the sky first and the tree on top?

Because when you try to paint dark paint over light paint that is wet, the light paint will mess things up. There are other reasons also, too long to discuss here.

Great its a pity you had to try and bring down other painter though

So exactly what other painter did I attempt to bring down? I painted both trees. So if you mean I brought down the painter of the first tree, I only brought myself down, which can be an admirable thing to do.

....you know, I know it has been a year, but I hope that after a year, you have been growing too. If you find yourself still agreeing with what you said, I hope you will learn that this is an example...and you being hurt over it means that you aren't seeing this objectively. Pity that you can't take objective criticism.

I understand why you darkened the sky holes but you needed to do that because your tree was overall too solid and too dark.

It's a beautiful tree, but the biggest tree painting mistake is dissing another artist's work.
