Before You Pray For A Deaf Person, Watch This

As the video title says, before you pray for a Deaf person, please watch this. In the video, we discuss one of the issues that many Deaf people have had with hearing people, specifically some hearing Christians who are too quick to pray for them without knowing or understanding Deaf culture- instead of being quick to pray for a Deaf person, we shared what is the best way to respond instead.
Also, I want to clarify one thing in the video… when I said, “If anything, I feel… that they should share about God and His love for them”… I want to clarify what I meant… that obviously the first thing you should do for a Deaf person is NOT to pray for them. Instead, do as you would with any other hearing person… say hi, introduce yourself, get to know them, etc. and then when an opportunity comes up, that you feel led to share about God, then that’s fine but just not the first thing you do is pray for them or share about God… that often will just push Deaf people away… because of their past experiences. Anyways, just wanted to clarify what I meant.
I hope you guys enjoyed this video! Keep an eye out for more new videos coming soon!! :) Be sure to subscribe if you haven’t yet. Also, I teach a sign or two everyday on @signedwithheart, so if you’re on Instagram too, be sure to follow Signed With Heart there too. :)
Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and learn sign language!!

My daughter is deaf she’s 9 months , and I’ve been going through this where people from church will try to “fix” her I’m proud of my baby girl and if Jesus sent her to me like that , I’m more then happy . I agree people need to be more sensitive when it comes to this Thanks for posting this I thought I was wrong for thinking this way . Thank you ❤️

Thank you so much for this video. I am deaf and recently I was blessed to receive a wheelchair after five years of steadily losing my ability to walk (severe joint degeneration and dislocations) and the first thing my in-laws and church family said when they saw me in it was that they would pray that I would be healed and could give it away. But for me the chair is an end to being house bound, leaning on people or a cane, being unable to go to the park or the beach. It hurt that they viewed something that was such a blessing to me as being something I should want to get rid of.

I love your dad’s passion for the word of God, it was too cute when he stood up to preach it! Thank you for continuing to educate the hearing community on deaf culture. I’ve been blessed to have a sister who majored in deaf studies at CSUN and taught me a lot about the deaf culture. So many times we hearing people don’t realize how rude or offensive we are being when interacting with someone who is deaf. Thank you for this video! P.S. I love your IG page!!

This is wonderful! I've been learning about deaf culture for a couple of years now and I never would've thought to lay my hands on someone but I realized there are people like that. But I love how your dad explains it that we should be led by the Holy Spirit. Really in all things we do. We'd probably keep ourselves out of a lot of awkward situations if we would! Lol God bless!

I’m so glad you made this video. This absolutely needed to be said. I’m guilty of praying for people, from a distance, that God would change their situation. But now that you’ve made this video, I will pray that person has their needs met. I’ve been watching the asl interpreter at my church! I would love to learn asl well enough to interpret!

Thank you so much for sharing this to help give other hearing people our insight of this situation! One thing I would say when a hearing person finds out that I’m Deaf. He/she would come up to me and ask if they’d pray for me. I’d explain that I don’t need a prayer for my ears to be healed. My heart is already saved by the love of Jesus Christ. However, I use this as an advantage to share that many Deaf people doesn’t know Jesus in their heart language. Then, ask the hearing person if WE can pray TOGETHER for other Deaf people to get to know Jesus and for their hearts (not ears) to be healed through Him.

That must feel so awkward and condescending. Your experiences as a person who is deaf are valuable! Your community and culture are valuable! You are needed in the world. It wouldn’t make sense to pray for a person to stop being part of any other culture, so why would anyone think it’s appropriate for you?

I just wanted to say this was a wonderful video! Your Dad is awesome and I’d love to hear more of him explaining the words of the Bible! You and your Dad are great together I love you both! The way you and your Dad are together is how me and my deaf daughter were before she passed. She had cancer and people all over my state prayed for her to heal from that. So you see it’s not what we want it’s what God wants. And He wanted to bring her Home to Him! I tell myself that it was the only way she could be healed from the cancer. She was only 8 yrs old. People need to understand that you can’t heal deafness just like I can’t heal the freckles on my body. That’s how God made me and I’ve excepted that! Just as my deaf daughter excepted being deaf! God made us all different! I’ll be watching for your new videos. I’m loving learning new signs and remembering the old!!! God Bless you and your Dad!💕💕🙏🙏

I do not usually comment on videos, but I just have to say how much I loved this video! I recently found you on instagram and saw that you said you're nervous to be in front of the camera. You shouldn't be! I really really enjoyed this. As someone who wants to learn ASL and a strong Christian I found this video very impactful. Also, when you do interviews like this, I pick up signs that you have done short teaching videos on really quickly! I feel like watching these conversations is a great addition to your short videos to help teach! I would enjoy a couple of videos of you (and your dad) talking about the gospel! After all, that is the reason we are here and I'd love for you to continue to use your platform to share the gospel and His love! Or even showing us Christian signs. Keep it up, Ashley!!

Loved this message and insight from you on how it feels to be approached in this way. I have a disability as well and find that many Christians have good intentions but it comes off as very rude when approached and not even asked your name just to be asked what's wrong with you? Do you have a unforgiven sin? Do you have enough faith to be healed? Can I pray for you? This really puts a wall between Christians with disabilities & Christians without disabilities. It's something that needs to change in the Church because many of my friends with disabilities avoid church because of how they are treated as a spectacle or someone who needs fixed rather than a equal and valuable member of the body of Christ just the way they are. Thank you so much for your videos!

What a wonderful message! You and your dad are amazing, thank you for sharing your experiences. For people who don’t realize how they are effecting others. 1.It’s never ok to touch people because they give you permission to pray for them. Ask permission for that too! Doesn’t matter if they are deaf, blind, in a accident, pregnant or you are just praying for good health. 2.I don’t think most people are wanting to bother others or make things awkward, they have good intentions. But sometimes it is clearly offensive why they are praying about you...”*oh no I’m so sorry you are not how I think you should be*, let me pray for you”.

I love this video, and the message you both share. Most of all, I am happy to see that your Dad, as a non-native signer, uses mostly Signed Exact English. And that it's OK with you that he doesn't appear to use ASL grammar. I may be wrong in my assumptions, as I'm a newbie with ASL. But, I find that ASL sentence syntax takes a lot of time and effort to transform each of my thoughts into the correct grammar. I want to get better at true ASL, but for the time being, it's nice to just be able to communicate in sign, even if it's SEE. Thanks for posting Ashley!!
@jonihofmann3318
@jonihofmann3318 4 года назад
@@KisDraga Thanks for the reply. I don't really know if I use PSE or SEE more? I'm pretty new at signing and I mostly string together 4 or 5 word sentences at the most right now. I do like how true ASL syntax seems much less "wordy" and still gets the thought across. I guess I mostly just sign how I would speak, at this point.
@briannaborka7415
@briannaborka7415 4 года назад
It definitely wouldn't be SEE. It would be PSE. Signed Exact English has Every. Single. Thing. that is in an English sentence- "The boy jumped(signing something for the ed), (signing a comma) ran, and ....I can't think of a good way to finish it, but you also sign the period. I have a Deaf coworker who originally learned SEE and taught us about it at a PD day. Ashley's dad is using ASL signs but often in English grammar order which to me means PSE, especially since he probably tends to simcom
@jonihofmann3318
@jonihofmann3318 4 года назад
@@briannaborka7415 Very interesting. Thanks for explaining the difference between PSE and SEE. And I assume "simcom" means "simultaneous communication", or talking to both deaf and hearing people at the same time :D

It was also interesting to see some new Christian signs I hadn't learned yet, so thank you!

Thank you so much for sharing!!! We recently had a comment made to us regarding our daughter...totally innocent and somewhat ignorant...that they would pray our daughter would be “healed”. We were kinda shocked and didn’t know how to respond. She doesn’t need to be “fixed”... God has created her perfect for His Glory! I just didn’t know what to say, so I just smiled and walked away. And here...I just so appreciate you’re vulnerability to share this video, because it gives me a better response the next time someone says something like that to us. Thank you, thank you! Your Dad is so awesome, what a blessing the two of you are. I've mentioned this before but my son has been hard of hearing since he was seven years old and in November (at the age of 22) he has lost 92% of his hearing, he just says this is the way God made me. His older sister has very mild Cerebral Palsy and as soon as the doctor gave me this long list of things she would "never do", I tossed it out and she's done most of everything we were told she wouldn't. That's how we live our lives, God made us the way we are and he won't let us down or leave us behind, we are who we are for a reason. We make a difference in this world. I appreciate all that you teach me especially so that I can communicate with my best friend who just happens to be my son.

I’m Jewish, and a woman of faith, and I think you and your father explained this beautifully. I don’t know what I would use from our scriptures to explain the same point, but I don’t think you should ever pray for someone with a chronic illness or condition. Most of those conditions are simply facts of life. You are deaf. I have multiple chronic illnesses. I don’t want people to pray for me unless I have the flu, or need surgery. And really, people should never lay hands without permission, with the intention of prayer or not. Blessings to you and yours. We may not believe the same thing, but I think we believe in the same God, and that’s what counts.

That was a really great way to bring awareness to many people about many things. I bet that you have sent a thoughtwave in motion. Even if it's not this precise situation, people need to be more conscious of how they behave. Blessed Be.

Im not religious anymore as an adult but I agree with your dad and think he worded it well and also in a kind way as to not offend Christian people. I think people who would put their hands on someone especially someone they just met is awkward and rude, tho they may have good intentions its not respectful of that other person and their space.... I would not want someone doing that to me, so why would i do that to someone else... isn’t that the golden rule or something?

Thank you for sharing this beautiful message. As a hearing person who knows some sign, I am very much enjoying your videos. And as a Christian I very much appreciate that we do need to show GOD'S love without being pushy and intrusive.

Wow! I just stumbled across your videos today. I've been taking an ASL class at my church for about a month now and wanted to find some videos to help me practice before class next week. I really love your instructional videos and the way you'll teach a sign, slow it down, and show it from the side. It's been so helpful! Then I watch this video and completely fall in love with you and your dad! The message was eye-opening on a subject I hadn't thought much about, but it makes so much sense! I was excited to learn that you're a Christian and are not only helping people like me learn ASL, but you're also sharing your faith! I love that! Keep up the amazing work. You've got a new fan :) Btw, your dad is just the cutest! In just the length of this video, it's clear how passionate he is about God and about his sweet daughter.
