The way you saved my non-existent career in music! I was so bummed after buying my first dynamic mic and did not get a decent gain in my DAW. I was using an XLR to 1/8" (with a 1/4" adapter) from my mic connected to the interface. I will now buy an XLR to XLR and hoping to get a better gain with my new mic! Thanks!

You dug me out of a hole! My condenser mic came with a cable having an XLR input on one end, a tiny 3.5mm on the other. So, I then plugged the 3.5mm pin into a 1/4 inch adapter, then inserting that into my audio interface. There was sound at all, but I insisted there should sound becuase this particular cable came supplied with the mic. Thanks to you I now know that I needed to purchase and XLR to XLR cable in order to utilse the pre-amp functionality of my audio interface to get sound from it. The 3.5mm does worki if I plug that into the tiny port on my PC. Thank you very much for your tutorial and for solving my issue. Brilliant 🙂

So you've just literally popped up on my feed when I'm researching cables, the reason being I got an expression pedal to use with my midi keyboard and it wouldn't work until I discovered that I need to be using a TRS cable so i started my investigation and found your channel, what a delight to find someone to explain in lay-man terms the difference between the afore mentioned cables, I also discovered I'm using the wrong cables(TS) between my Focusrite 2i2 and my Rokit 6 Monitors .So Pete i just want to say thank you and you have a new sub.👌👌

I bought my first SM57 to mic my Guitar AMP to send it to my PA. I had a XLR to 1/4 ‘’ cable and found the level I was getting from my microphone was sooooo low, I had to turn my PA system way up to hear anything: I thought the microphone was broken. Your video explained it all: microphone signals need to be amplified via XLR connection in order to boost the very low signal they are sending to a PA system. Your video couldn’t have been more clear! Thanks!

Good video, thanks man. Just one observation, about the statement at 4:17. Gain and volume are two different things. Gain is the signal increase at the preamp going into your gear. Volume is the loudness coming out of your gear. Gain can affect your tone, such as generating overdrive and adding noise. Your volume controls the loudness of the sound. I hope that these general definitions help folks are learning from your video.
@PeteJohnsMusic
@PeteJohnsMusic 4 года назад
Good point. I tend to often use gain and volume interchangeably, and in fact some plugins and audio gear do the same. Sometimes to keep things simple it does make them less accurate! Perhaps I need a new video explaining the difference? 🤔

Hello, I have a question about inputs back side of my interface. I actually use an xlr mic connected one of the mic input front of the device. And there are two line output. Should a buy those cables and connect to the pc is it gonna make sound better or what's gonna change. Thanks in advance. I couldn't find any videos about this this s why needed to ask. Nice video!

Hey there. So, the line out connections are for connecting to monitor speakers and will give you the best quality sound. The PC should be connected digitally however via USB. studiolivetoday.com/cables

I think you are the right guy to ask, how do i connect my mixer which has a ts/trs output directly to passive speakers which has + - poles?
@PeteJohnsMusic
@PeteJohnsMusic Год назад
Ooh…. You’ll want a converter that can convert a TS plug to standard speaker wire. I haven’t done this personally but if you search online you’ll find something I’m sure.

Hey there. Generally not. I always recommend using XLR for microphones. studiolivetoday.com/cables

Hi - great video. Some questions please. How do I connect my keyboard to the Focusrite? The keyboard has an Audio Out left and right. Also, if a guitar amp has an XLR out - can I plug my guitar into the amp, use a cable from the XLR out of the amp to the focusrite input? Won't that be a clearer, better recording than miking up the guitar amp? Please advise. Thank you - John

Hey there. Yes; and yes! This will help with what you need to record a stereo keyboard - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Dbz8sxuy5X0.html And you can indeed plug out a balanced signal from guitar to amp and amp to interface of they all have XLR. Just be sure to keep the volume and gain very low when you first connect as it can send a very hot (loud) signal.

@@PeteJohnsMusic I really appreciate your taking the time to reply as I am learning about home studio recording. I subscribed to your channel. What cable do I use to connect from my keyboard to Focusrite. the keyboard has a line out left and right 1/4 inch. Do I use both of them from the keyboard to channels one and two on the audio interface? Please be specific with me as I am a beginner with this with the cables - from keyboard - use 1/4 inch TR or TRS - one or two cables? and what ends to audio interface? Thank you in advance my friend. Also, what is the best way to record vocals on audio interface - mic up amp or go straight into interface?

Please help. I have so many questions. I heard TRS cable could be balanced with mono or stereo signals or it could be unbalanced with mono or stereo signals. I don't know if it's true. Iam so confused. What is the best cable for studio monitor speakers? My speaker is "KRK Rokit 5 G4" and my audio interface is " Focusrite Scarlet 2i2".

Great information! Thanks. I have a question regarding output cords from a keyboard to a sound board. Of the 2 types of quarter inch cords you showed, is one type preferred? I ask because I purchased a guitar cord (because it had a right angle on one end) to use from my keyboard rt/lft out into our sound board. It didn't always work & I'm wondering if the type of cord was the problem.
@PeteJohnsMusic
@PeteJohnsMusic 6 лет назад
Hmmmmmm.... it should still work whether it’s TS or TRS, it may just be better quality with TRS if the keyboard supports it, though I’ve just used standard TS guitar cables in the last and it has worked fine. Are the inputs on the board line level inputs?

Great video Pete. I have a motu m2 and a Topping A90 amp, how would I connect my balanced headphones to this setup? Would it go Headphones to Amp then to Audio interface? If so what cables would be needed in this setup? Thanks again
@PeteJohnsMusic
@PeteJohnsMusic 3 года назад
You’ll usually monitor by plugin directly in to the interface. If your amp is connected to the line in, you’ll be able to monitor through the interface too.

Great info…. Thx….assume the Focusrite will need balanced TRS cables to connect to studio monitors as I use an IPad with GarageBand for my recording?
@PeteJohnsMusic
@PeteJohnsMusic 2 года назад
You can use unbalanced TS but TRS will get you better shielding and reduce potential interference.

Hi! Great video. If I connect my synt to audio interface with two TRS cables, coming from two synt outputs, I am wondering will signal be balanced or?
@PeteJohnsMusic
@PeteJohnsMusic 3 года назад
Hi there. Depends on exactly what devices you are using. Check the documentation to see if the outputs are balanced TRS or just mono TS.

Hi Pete, thanks for the great video! I've a Behringer UM2 and a Behringer Ultra DI100 DI Box. I would like to connect my electric guitar to the DI Box to the guitar amp and the Behringer UM2. However the Behringer DI Box uses XLR output while the Behringer UM2 uses line for the instrument input. Can I use XLR to TRS cable to connect the DI box to the audio interface?
@PeteJohnsMusic
@PeteJohnsMusic Год назад
Hey there. So, the UM2 only had an instrument input which is a Hi-Z and not line level, so you’d probably not get enough signal through. You’d likely need an interface with line inputs like the Behringer HD series or a Steinberg UR22 or similar, studiolivetoday.com/gear

Dear Pete, I'm looking to purchase an audio interface to record a singer with a grand piano. The set up i have in mind is, two small condenser mics on the piano and a nice large condenser mic for the singer. Am I correct in thinking that I would need an interface with three separate mic inputs? Do you have any suggestions? It's for classical music also. Cheers, Les
@PeteJohnsMusic
@PeteJohnsMusic 2 года назад
Hey Les. Yes, you’ll need 3 mic preamps for this. I would recommend the Steinberg UR44C personally. The Focusrite 8i8 is good too. Another option is a mixer/interface hybrid such as the ZOOM LiveTrak L8 that I currently use. All my gear recommendations and current setup is here - studiolivetoday.com/gear
