What's the difference between a TS, TRS and TRRS cable?

How to tell the difference between TS, TRS and TRRS cables, and what each are used for in the home studio:
TS = Tip/Sleeve - mono unbalanced cable used for instruments, speakers
TRS = Tip/Ring/Sleeve - mono (balanced) or stereo (unbalanced) cable used for line level inputs and outputs (mono) and headphones/inserts (stereo)
TRRS = Tip/Ring/Ring/Sleeve - stereo (unbalanced) + microphone cable, used for smartphones, tablets and laptops.

Perfect. Thank you. Just spent hours asking people I knew for help on how to record from a device onto my phone and nobody could help other than tell me to get a computer. After enough googling I decided that I needed a TRRS cable, but didn’t know why and wasn’t totally sure that it would fix my problem. I went to guitar center to buy one, and after searching for a while with an employee, they looked it up in their system and said that they didn’t have any in stock, had never had any in stock, and didn’t ever plan on having any. They could order me one, but it was on backorder and it literally wasn’t worth waiting around for it because they’d had other stuff on back order for 3 months. I came home feeling pretty hopeless, but figured I should to more googling/YouTubing. Found this video and YES! I know exactly what I need, exactly why I need it, and it’s only $10 on Amazon. Just ordered it and should be ready to record on a scuffed iPhone setup by the weekend. THANK YOU!!!

Big thanks...You were clear...easy to understand and EXTREMELY HELPFUL. here's to hoping all good things come to you. I've been using a mic into a preamp and then popped an XLR to ts adapter to run it as a line in on my interface but I kept getting distortion and I couldn't tell from where. Well I guess that adapter was meant for guitars...and I've been walking in circles wondering why I was getting distortion...I thought it was a gain staging thing. Now I know why. They look alike and fit right...but they aren't the same. Thanks again.

Perhaps you could clarify about the power supplied over TRS and TRRS cables. Some microphones draw power over those cables (and XLRs often utilize "phantom power" right?). Could you elaborate on how and when power is transmitted over the cables? And how can someone tell if their computer/laptop/smartphone is going to provide that power?
@PeteJohnsMusic
@PeteJohnsMusic 2 года назад
Hey there. So short version is that if you’re using a microphone which requires phantom power you should use XLR cables. TS and TRS are usually unpowered.

Hey there. I recommend checking out my cable guide here. studiolivetoday.com/cables In short, TS works with everything. TRS needs a device with a specific balanced output. Adapting between male and female doesn’t change the signal as long as the connectors are consistent.

It does go to show that it’s not the most important thing in the world. You might not even notice the difference if you’re not already getting interference. But it’s worth sending a balanced signal if you can.

I'm wondering if you can plug a TRRS earbuds (have a mic) into a TRS belt clip radio and have it work as simple non-mic earbuds?
@PeteJohnsMusic
@PeteJohnsMusic 4 года назад
Hey there my friend. It depends on the exact device, but yes, often TRRS headphones do work correctly in a standard TRS jack.

Hey Pete - great video. Just to clarify - it sounds like a guitar would not be able to be connected to the the balanced trs line inputs, correct? Would need either a mixer or an interface with additional ts/instrument inputs instead?
@PeteJohnsMusic
@PeteJohnsMusic 4 года назад
Correct. Guitars need a unbalanced TS cable. Some 1/4” TRS inputs like those on many mixers and interfaces can support TS (often called instrument or Hi-Z) but may need you to set this.

So, should I be using TRS cables as my amp to cab cables and guitars to amp cables?
@PeteJohnsMusic
@PeteJohnsMusic 3 года назад
Nope. TS cables for anything involving a guitar or instrument. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dyrxZrUeSEg.html

Hi Pete, love your videos, you always answer my questions that I have for any audio problems I run into!!! Thank you! I have an Emberton speaker (Marshall) but it doesn’t have an audio Jack input/output, it’s only usb c for charging. I bought a usb c to aux adapter but it won’t work, how can I make it connect to a phone without Bluetooth ? I like to hear myself on the speaker when I’m recording so that’s why
@PeteJohnsMusic
@PeteJohnsMusic 3 года назад
Hmmmmm..... I wonder if it does have an actual analog audio output? I’m not sure or familiar with the speaker. Maybe ask over at the Create Record Release Facebook group?
