I have a set of beach wheels for my Hobie 16. You can drag your boat across grass but not rock and sand. Great video.

A beach cart is essential in my situation for getting my boat from the front yard to the river edge where I put it upside-down over the bow of the hulls (it's a double beam cradle with 8" side posts). I then paddle my boat (10 minutes ) , sails onboard, to the mouth of the lake where I use the beach cart to roll the boat over the low water at the end of the river. The cart and paddle gets stashed, I raise the sails and off I go. It's a bit of a procedure but I don't have to trailer or raise the mast each time I sail. I put my boat on 4- 6x6 wooden blocks on the grass. Keeps it stable and up off the ground.

I buy all of ours from cadcat in germany around 150 euros per wheel - those big wheels are expensive but worth it.

I went the DIY route first but struggled with it once built. The key is having some sort of bearings between the axle and the wheels. Difficult to source for a DIY build (The Cat Trax uses delrin rods along the axel between it and the wheel hubs.) After a few years I splashed some cash (around $550) on the classic Cat Trax with balloon tyres from Florida Sailcraft. I wish I had just done that from day one. Nothing I have seen comes close to how easy they make it to manouver your boat around. Another tip, if you have the basic cat trax without the cradles you may find the boat wanting to slip backwards once you have it at the balance point. You can fix this by running a line from the center of the axle back round the rear crossbar, through the mainsheet cam cleat and up to the front beam tied off round the dolphin striker. Especially useful if you are doing it solo and when getting the boat out of the water at the end of the sail. I tie the line that comes out of the axle ends up round the shrouds, back down and around the axle ends then up again tied off around the shrouds.

Joseph, I'm thinking about buying an old hobie 16 (and hope to learn on this). I'm told there are no soft spots in the hulls and that the mast is in good shape. The trampoline will likely need to be replaced and it will need new rigging. I may be able to buy it for less than 1k (before the needed repairs). can you give me general idea what such repairs would cost? Love your channel BTW.

Great choice! A trampoline will probably be somewhere in the region of $500 and 250 for the rigging - those will give the boat a great facelift.

@@JoyriderTV Hi Joe, Love the videos. Did you ever make the video on using the beach dolly with a Hobie Getaway? If so can you post a link. Given the weight of the boat, its a bit of a hassle to cart it over soft sand. I have a standard beach dolly and was wondering if a frame dolly would make it any easier. Any advice would be appreciated.

My daughter and I did it in Long Beach last year, and after dealing with it I went and found some beach wheels. Too many rough surfaces to contend with, plus other boating traffic.
