Can You Make a Sailboat From Hardware Store Materials? DIY Plywood Sailboat/ PD Racer Build.

I really wanted a sailboat so I decided to make one from 3 sheets of plywood, construction adhesive, materials from my local hardware store and some bits from a thrift store. The boat I made is almost a PD Racer, the only difference is the bottom template I used is a tiny bit different. You can find lots of plans for PD racers online, I used ideas from many of them as well as the bottom measurements and some concepts from Michael Storers OZ Racer plans. His plans are very detailed, and a great resource.

Great boat built there! I have a PD Racer that was built perhaps 6 years ago. Got it from another guy. These boats are really fun and since I am storing this in my garage, I am expecting to sail it for the rest of my life. i am 100% certain that this is the cheapest boat you will ever have - both in material cost, storage and in maintenance! I am wishing you many happy days ahead!

Yes, I really like it. I wouldn't mind it 2 feet longer though so my family could fit a little more comfortably....ah well, if I ever see plywood at a good price again, I might try it.

To get an accurate 90 degrees angled hole without a drill press you can create a simple jig consisting of a cube where you just cut 1/4 of it off creating a squared "L" shaped block, then start drilling with the bit resting on the groove as a reference, then remove the block mid drilling and go as far as you need, works best with longer drill bits
@LostWax2
@LostWax2 2 года назад
Ooh, that's a great, simple solution, thanks!
@Mechie980
@Mechie980 2 года назад
Another, even EASIER one is to take any CD, set it over the hole location with the shiny side up, then look at the drillbit as it reflects on the CD, your eye can see if it's off angle (i.e. the "two" drillbits will look like an intersecting angle, instead of a straight line), straighten as necessary and drill away. Samurai carpenter is where I got that, I doubt it his original idea, but it works well for any orthagonal/perpendicular/90° drilling!

@@LostWax2 We used your methods to make really cool buoyancy "cushions" for a sailing canoe. Four layers of EPS foam laminated to the curve on the inside of the boat, shaped with rounded corners - then EVA foam on the outside to make a really neat - non squeaky - and nice to touch surface. Each side about 80lbs buoyancy but very little weight. It is your tech all the way! Thanks Chris!

I'm glad the video was helpful! Mik's got a ton of great info in those plans, well worth the $ just to see the processes he uses. I am super happy with both the weight and durability of my build so far- though it has only been out for one season, and I haven't been in a strong wind yet.

I have really enjoyed your dry humour in these boat related videos, so thanks very much Chris. I watched the cheap canoe one ages agp (was that pre Covid? (I think so). A disclosure: I have both these plans from Mik Storer, but slacko that I am I have yet to build one. I did build my own modified version of a super heavyweight Pirogue that I made with my excellent boat builder of a brother who was my skipper about some 50 years ago, and for him, but he and his cactus back found it too heavy (no surprises there. I'm very interested in any feedback you may have on endurance of the build especially given that it's not epoxy based. After an over exposure to epoxy I am trying to avoid too much of it anymore. I do seem to get rashes even thinking of opening thise A and B bottles. So, I have started looking at as much PVA/TB2 0r 3 boat builds as I can. After you've had a bit of time on the water with the kids can you post an update to youtube for us? It would really help me to grasp my inner building of 'finished' boat demon. cheers mate Aye.

Yeah, it's not something you're gonna do in a weekend, but I was surprised how much faster a build it was than my canoe, I think mostly because I didn't use any epoxy, so I did a lot less sanding.
