This is a video giving advice on how to decide which golf discs to buy during your first months / year as a disc golfer. A lot of this is my personal opinion based on what I've seen work for myself and others, as well as what has not worked. I think most things I've said can apply to all new players of the game, but don't take this video as gospel, test out what I'm telling you for yourself and if you think I'm wrong about something, say so. I am still learning just like you are.
To summarize, I recommend starting off throwing just mids and putters while you learn the fundamentals, then gradually working your way into the world of drivers beginning with the slower drivers (Fairway drivers).
Some molds I suggest working with are the following:
Putters: MVP Ions, Innova Aviars, Gateway Wizards, Discraft Challengers, Magnets
Mids: MVP Axis, Discraft Comet, Buzz, Innova Shark, Roc, Latitude 64 Fuse
Slow drivers: Innova Leopard, Teebird, Millennium JLS, Discraft Cyclone
Fast Drivers: Millennium OLF, OLS, Discmania PD, TD, Innova Starfire, Valkyrie, Discraft Avenger and Avenger SS
Max speed drivers: Millennium Quasar, Discraft Nuke, Innova Destroyer
There are plenty of other good discs out there, these are just discs I have personal experience with and feel are pretty good overall.
In general, work with slow, neutral discs in lighter weights (165-170g) to begin with, and as you learn the game slowly work faster discs into your bag if you find you can control them.
I will follow this up later with a video on how to flesh out your bag once you've developed strong fundamentals and good arm speed, and are ready to develop a complete set of shots.

I know this video is old Mike and idk how much you are into disc golf these days but I would love to see a updated version of this video. BE nice to see your view on new current discs and to see what new info you have on choosing discs

This is great advice. Only wish I had known this last year when I first started playing. I'll definitely be looking to change up what is in my bag. Also love the feedback about driving with putters and mid ranges!

that milineum JLS was the 1st driver i could throw striaght. and level....i found it and it was so beat up it loss its printing on top but the edge was nice and smooth.... i was trying to find its owner for over a month or more before i finally decided to throw it.....right from the get go it preformed just as i envisioned a driver flying down range...i had brought a boss ape achron ect ect beliving that the latest disc out there would cure my whoas of watching the driver go out about 40-60 ft then climb sharply upward about 100 ft into a arch flight path then come crashing striaght down and roll sideways to the fairway for 200ft....very frustrating for someone who grew up throwing a frisbee. ... i still didnt learn what was actually most responsible for early failure until watching this video and seeking help to identify the driver i found.. .1st i thought it was a SL thinking the letters stood for (S)traight (L)evel. but that disc didnt proform as i expected then a friend told me it stood for Starfire Less stable...A couple months later when i began turning over the disc frequently and thought i finally broke in disc past its lifespan that i ask another friend who wanted to help me more and he saw what i failed to see....the name and maker was under the bottom in raised lettering and plain as day ...it was then i did research and found out it wasn't a high speed driver but a fairway with a speed rating of 8....and reason i was turning it over so much was mostly due to throwing it above that speed rating as well as it being worn past its time....i kept it for months until a friend of mine began on his own to play disc golf and was having same issues about not being able to throw straight n level except with a putter and midrange....i gave him my fustrating history of wasting money on high speed discs too early. and wish i had someone to explain. thid info to me....a speed rating of 11 is about all i can use and only on my forehand ay moment....i still carry the Ape but it is my utility disc only wjich i use to throw overhead or to get out from behind trees close to basket by slowly skipping it along ground and letting it fade back to better spot.......but most of my drives backhand are with a valkrye or an eagle because i can get the most out of those disc with my arm speed...... your video......should be watched by all beginners so they can understand how they should progress toward their optimum skill without wasting money needlessly and to have good results instead of frustrating ones like i went through....

so i took your advice and went to throw 4 putter only rounds, i was surprised that i do pretty much exactly same score than with my 10 disc bag. i have only been playing for a month now, so this raises really interesting questions about my play style.

Great video! 2 reasons people tend to go for overstable drivers for forehand: It is more natural to throw on an anhyzer angle compared to backhand and off axis torque is more common due to rolling the hand on release. Forehanding midranges and less stable drivers is great practice.

Graet video. Ive been playing for about 1 month. I have 6 discs: Drivers: Innova Leopard 150G/KC Pro Gazelle 175g for windy days. Mid: 2 Sharks 150g : Putter: 2 Innova Aviar I can throw my sharks better than my Leopard a lot of the time. I have only used my putter when Im 20ft or less from a basket. Im getting better with the leopard, but my m,echanics are still off. Im working on it. I just got the Gazelle yesterday, and have not been able to control it at all. Im putting it aside for a while until I get better with my shark and leopard. I think my wind up form is horrible. I need a lot more practice. Ive made some really great shots with my shark. I am very comfortable with it. at my local course, I can get par 3s on most holes just making conservative shots with the sharks. great vid! thx I really need to experiment with other discs...

Thanks for the tips. I think companies like Discraft should come up with a more appropriate "starter set" than the 3 disc set with a Magnet, Buzz and Avenger SS. As you point out, for beginners like myself that are throwing 200 feet, I can throw all three and get about the same results.
@DireWolfy

Midrange drivers, such as the buzzz ss are very useful for me, they can be thrown 200 ft for me with minimum effort

I have been playing for a year come May. I am currently throwing my Axiom Envy around +200', my buzzz around 225', and my Tbirds/rivers around 250'. I found a really beat in Star Beast and started throwing that some, it gets out to 275' on a good throw. Should I stick with these discs until I can push them out farther, I would like to at least extend each class of disc by about 40'.

Mike you need to either put your putter round videos back up or you need to get rid of the link in your video.

I live in South Florida. The wind is almost always an issue on my home course, as are tree-laden, swampy areas. Does this affect your recommendations for weights or discs?
@thediscgolfvids
@thediscgolfvids 7 лет назад
Heavier discs are more predictable in headwinds and crosswinds, but its more about how you throw than what you throw. Learning not to expose the bottom of the disc to a crosswind, for example, is very good to know. Lighter discs are nice for tailwinds.
@Mzkysti
@Mzkysti 6 лет назад
Also on disc weights you write there that "working from there" but to which way, heavier, lighter or both ways? You have both lighter and heavier of your discs in you bag?

I'm trying to take your advice and kick my high speed drivers. I can get an MVP vector and MVP tangent both to about 210 feet reliably now. Which MVP driver should I go with? I'm thinking an AMP or a Switch. Which would you suggest?
@brandonswan9247
@brandonswan9247 8 лет назад
+Brandon Swan BTW I ended up getting a crave. Flied pretty consistent but It flies a little more overstable than it should because I don't get it up to speed. I'll stick with it until I can throw it around 300' I think
