One of the most common problems learners drivers have is staying left too much and for too long. In this video I explain why this can be less safe.

8:54 During my test, I got a minor fault for "Normal driving positioning." At the end the examiner mentioned that I stayed out of the road for too long, despite there being parked cars dotted along on my side of the road and no other vehicles ahead. But I did so to enhance my visibility of the road ahead and i will continue to do so 🙂

Thanks - another great video. I see a lot of driving instructors who don’t appear to understand this themselves. They allow pupils to make a sharp right turn just before obstacles which leaves the drivers off side wing projecting across the road. This scenario is very well illustrated in your clips.

I have learnt to do this over my 25 years of driving. I couldn't tell you when I started, it just feel natural to me to be able to see more own the road and give myself options. When a passenger in my wifes car, I have asked her in the past why is she getting so close to a parked car, she can't give me a reason and just tells me to stop teller how to drive. She also will drive up to junctions, often stopping fully, before looking to see if it's clear. That's another discussion.

I wish driving examiners in Greece understood this. My driving instructor told me to mindlessly go back to the right on my test (we drive on the right) EVERY time a space is "big enough" because examiners WILL deduct points if you don't follow this rule like a robot. While I did get my license first try, I would probably fail by the standards expressed in your videos.

I only wish more drivers would do as you suggest . And it's not a minority , I would say it's the majority of drivers stay left for far too long , before then swinging out to the right at the very last moment . Although basically I'm only repeating everything you said . Meaning either A . They weren't taught to do otherwise , in the first place . Or B . They've forgotten everything they were told . Let's hope some are now watching your video , and seeing the logic of your advice . As always , your suggestions are logical , common sense approaches to largely unnecessary problems , encountered by a sizeable number of ' experienced ' driver's , on the roads of Britain everyday !!! Thanks , yet another really useful video .

A practice which I don't think is taught but is becoming more common is, when waiting behind a line of parked cars for oncoming traffic to pass, put your indicators on to signal to drivers behind that you are actually going to pull out, so they don't think you've stopped and go past you.

I moved to the UK from Australia and with the roads being so narrow it's nerve wrecking. The cars parked on both sides of the road leaving a tiny corridor for only one participant of traffic to pass through takes away all the joy from driving. I'm just taking it really slow and easy, but I can sense the guy behind me losing patience :D My worst nightmare is being stuck between two cars without being able to go anywhere or running into a parked car on my left...

My driving instructor taught me to indicate when going around parked vehicles like that so as not to confuse drivers behind me and alert them to my intentions. I'm curious to know if you teach your pupils the same as I didn't see you doing it in this video. It negates you having to stop so far back and stops other drivers from going around you as they can see you also are waiting.
@xxxxxxxx3476
@xxxxxxxx3476 5 месяцев назад
I'm afraid , in my opinion , that wasn't particularly the best advice from your instructor . If you had listened to the advice from Richard , he gave numerous reasons for staying out when safe to do so , and not positioning your vehicle so close to the left as to need to indicate your intention to go around the parked vehicle ahead . Do you really think indicating every time you pass a parked vehicle is practical , or indeed necessary, in this day and age . I can assure you that you'll have more than enough to cope with ,than to worry about whether or not , you should use your indicators constantly . It's just simply not practical to drive like that . Plus in the ' real world ' , you're just going to annoy other drivers , constantly doing that , to the extent they may end up venting their anger in your direction . And that's one thing you definitely don't want to do , if you can help it ! More than likely , they can see the parked vehicle's ahead , almost as well as you can . They then no doubt , will judge your speed to indicate that your intention is to drive around them , and not stop and park behind them . It's just simple common sense . Plus not all driving instructors are as capable as Richard , I can assure you of that . But I won't go into that right now . As that opens up a whole different aspect of what a good driving instructor really should be like . I will say that Richard is without doubt , the most sensible , level headed driving instructor I've ever come across . So my advice to you , is to pay attention to everything he says , and learn from someone who really knows best .

Hey there! I am an American motorist and I have seen a few UK driving lessons where the student comes upon a red light. What I want to know is whether the UK will legally allow me to execute an opportunistic left turn at a red light under the same circumstances that are the case here in the US -- being at a standstill, there being no conflicting cross motor traffic, there being no conflicting cross pedestrian traffic, and there being no posted prohibition.
@xxxxxxxx3476
@xxxxxxxx3476 5 месяцев назад
Hi , Absolutely not unfortunately !!! It's totally illegal to go through a red light here . Regardless of whatever time of day or night it is . When I drove in the States on occasional visits in the past , I was always uneasy doing as you explained . It simply didn't come natural to me , after years of observing our way of doing things here in the UK . Although I accept that it does help keep the traffic flowing to some extent . However , with our clogged up roads over here , traffic lights are just another cross we have to bear , on a daily basis .

Are there mandatory lessons in the UK? If so, which lessons? If I keep continuing to drive well, I might be able to get access to the exam soon. One mistake I make is getting too close to parked cars when they're on either side of the road.

Make a video about driving manual with a Old truck that doesnt have gauges for rpm and shifts clunky and doesnt run perfect. That would be a good watch and very helpful. specially for us in the US . PLease and thank you . Get all the good camera angles and smart advice in there too.
