I post book, poetry, and lifestyle content here on RU-vid. Thank you for watching, and make sure you hit that subscribe button so that you can continue to hear me gush about books (and other things).

EKG, what an honor not having my writing being too difficult 😆! It's so nice to be in the same company with Fariha Roisin, Jasmine Mans, Mary Oliver, and Sharon Olds. Shout outs to Rhiannon McGavin, too. She's doing big things! I appreciate you for the nice things you said and having me on your channel. Let me know when you're interested for being on mine. You know I'd be happy to introduce you to my community :) Recs for Newbies with your audience in mind: I Love You, Call Me Back by Sabrina Benaim Prelude to Bruise by Saeed Jones Duende by Tacy K. Smith (but anything by her is wonderful!) Bright Dead Things by Ada Limon (anything by her is amazing as well, though by popularity, this book or any book after since that's when her career really took off) Night Sky With Exit Wounds by Ocean Vuong Wild Invocations by Ysabel Y. Gonzalez And if you'd like to talk NJ authors, let me know and we can continue the convo on social media.

The pleasure is mine! Thank you for sharing your work with all of us. I appreciate your added recommendations. You mentioned so many great poets. Ada Limon, Tracy K Smith, and Ocean Vuong are some of my all time favorites. I’ll check out the others I haven’t read yet :) I’m always down to talk all things poetry. Thank you so much 🙏🏾

I'm so excited for these recommendations thank you! I am a newbie to poetry. Majority of the collections I own are ones some local writers(people I went to school with) published. I love their work and supporting them but I didn't quite know where to turn or what to pick up next. This is so helpful!

Thank you so much for making a video like this! I learned so much about poetry as a craft and I think highlighting diff POC writers and their connection to place really helped me understand poetry beyond white standards. Especially what Dimitri said about poetry as it evolves! This video was so so well done
@ebonykenae
@ebonykenae 2 года назад
I also learned more about myself through studying POC poets, particularly how we find homes in spaces that are not typically welcoming to us. I’m so happy you enjoyed this video. In my opinion, poetry should be accessible and be representative of a myriad of voices. I will always highlight POC poets on my channel for this reason 🫶🏾

Ahhh, I love this so much! I've been reading a poem a day from Nikki Giovanni's "Cotton Candy on a Rainy Day" (beautiful poem and poetry collection), but wanted to make sure that when finished, I went back and read more accessible works. I've checked out some videos and articles for recommendations before, but none are as special as yours to me because I really trust your opinion. I'd like to credit you as well for allowing Dimitri to perform his own piece so we could hear his voice. That was a nice introduction and convinced me to go subscribe to his channel! Rhiannon's poem stood out, so I'm definitely going to prioritize her collection and add it to my tbr! Thanks so much for making this video! It's needed!

Thank you so much for this video! Upon clicking into it, I was struggling with a panic attack and descending into an existential crisis. I had done some breath work and after a while, I opened RU-vid to find some escape. Instead I was met with overstimulation until I found your video. I appreciatedyour recommendation and am excited to buy and read 2 or 3. Much love for Dimitri Reyes and all he does too! ( :

Please don't read poetry as prose. The structure is there for a reason... The breaks in line are pauses for breathing, reflection, and the verses have an image to them. The impact is lost if you blur the verses together into a paragraph... (this is not criticism, I am just sharing my own thoughts, I hope this is ok and doesn't meet your eyes as something aggressive, thank you for reading)

jack edward’s reads poetry like prose…is that really wrong or just your preference?
@LucasSSP
@LucasSSP 2 месяца назад
@@jamesvanderbilt201 James, my point is this: do you want a singer to sing or do you want a singer to dance? Is a cook recipe something we use to build a house? I could try to build a house instead of making a carbonara, but would that be my preference or would that be just wrong? To me, reading a poem like prose is what I would call someone's preference.

@@LucasSSP but art is different because 100 people could interpret it 100 different ways and still be correct
@LucasSSP
@LucasSSP 2 месяца назад
@@jamesvanderbilt201 James, in my opinion interpretation cannot come before the work of art. I don't believe reading a poem like prose would be interpreting. Using a similar example I used ealier, interpretation would not be reading a cooking recepy as something else, changing the whole reason why there is a recepy in the first place. Interpretation to me would be reading a poem like a poem but changing the delivery, the pacing, but keeping the intended structure and etc. If you ignore the line breaks then it's the same as attempting to take pictures without considering focus, or light. There are fundamental elements to any artform and those make the art what it is. It might seem like an innovation to change one of those elementos but you are removing a fundamental element. Several art movements do that, like cubism where they remove the perspective from paintings, so that is not wrong. But even that is not preference, it's intentional. So your understanding is not mistaken. I just don't like preference being used to discuss something I consider to be important. I just feel like people might be using preference as an excuse to avoid learning.
